Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Fragrance-free, roll-on or stick, quick-drying.

My pits never smell bad, even though I'm a Sweaty Betty. Shame the same can't be said about the pits of my shirts after a few wears and washes.

I would like a deodorant that keeps my shirts from going nuclear.

Giraffey1 · 09/09/2018 22:43

I don’t have any children. So no stories to share on that count. For me, I usually buy Sure or sometimes Dove. I find roll-ons annoyingly slow to dry, but some sprays seem to deposit massive amounts of white powder everywhere. Now that really is annoying.

Pmliu · 09/09/2018 22:46

I use Nivea Pearl & Beauty Deospray, it has a light fresh subtle fragrant and is not too strong or overpowering.

scarlettlylah · 09/09/2018 22:54

Dove is fantastic and would totally introduce to my daughters. Soft and kind to skin and smells fresh all day and night.x

del2929 · 09/09/2018 23:19

i did alot of research when buying my dd first deodorant, i settled for toms of maine which was uses natural ingredients as far i know.

for myself i use sure maximum cream roll thinghy when on offer- lol and vaseline deodarant.

Cailin7 · 10/09/2018 00:01

we all use roll on or sticks. Dcs and DH quite like the nivea one, I prefer dove or sure. the main important factor is effectiveness and the smell.

farhanac · 10/09/2018 00:07

Prefer the roll on variety as seems to work better

tubbyj · 10/09/2018 00:56

don't really like deodorants

Pandamodium · 10/09/2018 07:21

I buy the dove Pomegranate and lemon for me and my daughter who is 12 and just started puberty, I started buying it after my sister recommended it too me.

Me and my daughter using the same type is handy as we are unlikely to both run out at once so they is always one on the go.

I find it has plenty staying power and doesn't mark her clothes, the only time she uses a stronger one (Mitchums) is for PE.

flozza42 · 10/09/2018 08:10

Both myself and my daughter use Sure , leaves no white marks on clothes which are annoying and it has a great smell which my fussy teenager loves

bubbleybooboo · 10/09/2018 08:31

I used to buy my daughter dove or sanex as its not as smelly as some thats on the market and she gets plenty of protection from it.

Ive always used sure and did change to sanex but i found i prefered sure so went back to that.

My son doesnt like the smell of mens ones and i have to agree. they really stink!

I tend to buy deodorant in North America and stock up when I'm there, as I like the sorts of stick ones that are available there, and weren't available here for the longest time. A totally different texture than some of the roll ons or paste type ones here, and even though you can get them now, there's a much bigger variety there. I like the 'stress response' ones, which are supposed to be better for the smell that comes with sudden stress sweat. I don't know if it's true, though, but it seems to work OK. I also try to buy the ones that say they reduce yellowing on white fabrics. And I want only mild scents - some of them are so strong.

mo3733 · 10/09/2018 09:39

i introduced my child to deodorant early on. its important to teach about personal hygiene from an early age

BL0SS0M · 10/09/2018 10:03

I prefer spray deodorant to roll on but would love to find one that is non chemical in an aerosol. I hate the smell of some of them as i find them way too chemically

Iamablanket · 10/09/2018 10:29

I have a few brands I like and buy whats on offer, these are mostly Sanex, Dove and Soft and gentle. I prefer spray but often use roll on because of the environmental impact of aerosols.

My daughter who is 20 uses spray, she's tried them all over the years and settled on Soft and gentle as her fave. 14 year old son couldn't care less what he uses and often doesn't remember to use it anyway Shock.

helly27 · 10/09/2018 10:31

My daughter uses a roll on as aerosols have been banned from her school

TheaP · 10/09/2018 10:54

My granddaughter has been using deodorant since she was 2 years old, she’s now 9. Unfortunately due to NAIT, a genetic disorder, she was diagnosed with precocious puberty due to brain haemorrhages before birth and has monthly hormone injections. She needs gentle, sensitive but effective deodorants, roll ons are good. She’s also blind and likes to smell light fragrances. Xx Thea

What deodorant do you buy and why? Dove Original Antiperspirant Deodorant Stick - because I trust the brand, its easy to apply, and it has moisturiser.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Only for sport and not school I buyKeep It Kind Fresh Kidz Fragrance Free Roll On Deodorant, because it was recommended to me and after research found it was additive free.
Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Yes, but he asked me first (mainly because of peer pressure at school - where they were all using Lynx - which I think is too grown up, so I compromised with the roll on for sport.
Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? probably the stick as I think you can put too much on with the roll on.
Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? I like a delicate scent, rose or green tea.
What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? No parabens (preservatives) and as gentle as possible.
What about anti-mark deodorants? I have ruined so many clothes with deodorants, so would head for anti-mark deodorant to look and feel more confident.

trevormcdonald · 10/09/2018 11:00

I have tried loads of different types, including Dove. I tried roll-on years ago but didn't think it was affective so went back to spray. I recently re-tried it and thought it was fab. I've switched to Lush deodorant bar though in an effort to cut down on waste. I was concerned about it not being anti-perspirant but have not noticed any difference in how much I sweat and have been really pleased with it. The only thing is it comes in a rectangular block which isn't the comfiest to apply to your underarm. I wouldn't go back to spray.

Sugarhouse · 10/09/2018 11:39

After trying many deodorants the only one that I feel confident will always work is Mitchum and I prefer a roll on

giddyypixie · 10/09/2018 11:41

When my son first started using deodorant, he just started using the same one his dad uses. Initially it was quite hard to get him to remember every day to put it on, so we had to keep reminding him!

vixxx666 · 10/09/2018 11:55

I struggle with finding a deodorant that doesn't irritate my underarms but also is good for stopping bad odour developing throughout a busy day.
My sons have no need for a deodorant just yet but there does need to be more child friendly deodorant as I don't fancy using these "grown up" ones on my oldest, who's just starting puberty.

MargoLovebutter · 10/09/2018 11:59

What deodorant do you buy and why? Dove original compressed

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Sensitive skin ones

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? DS was allergic to his own sweat in his armpits, so it was either start using anti-antiperspirant or use steroid creams, so we thought an A-P seemed like a better option.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Don't mind, whatever they prefer.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? I like clean, soapy smells.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? Effectiveness and scent.

What about anti-mark deodorants? Not that fussed about those.

IrmaFayLear · 10/09/2018 12:04

Definitely no sprays - dubious about the fumes.

Don't like scented ones - often a bit overpowering.

Yes to "no black marks" ones as most of my clothes are black.

I presented dd with a deodorant at about the age of 11. Awful memories of my own mother creeping into my room with a paper bag, extracting a roll-on, and whispering that I must "keep it hidden in a drawer". Confused

Ds went through the smellier the better stage where we all nearly died from Lynx fumes, but now he's settled on Man Dove, or whatever it's called!

wellhonestly · 10/09/2018 12:40

What deodorant do you buy and why?
For myself, usually Avon roll-on - I wait till they're on special offer and buy about five at a time. They are cheap, scentless and non-marking.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one?
I bought a stick deodorant because I don't like the idea of any of us breathing in a spray, and he would be unlikely to hang around flapping his armpits waiting for a roll-on to dry.

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it?
Embarrassingly, my mother first suggested it to my son (I genuinely couldn't smell anything - she just said she was being pre-emptive!)

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick?
We both prefer a stick, but I tend to go with a roll-on. purely on price. He bulk-buys his on Amazon.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? Scentless, every time.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child?
Effectiveness, discretion (no pungent artificial smells), price. Wish I could do something about the wasteful packaging as well.

What about anti-mark deodorants? Yes please! Can't understand why "marking" deodorants would still be sold tbh.
