Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

What deodorant do you buy and why? I have three teenage DDs who use different products. Two use sprays but seem to use them so rapidly that I am keen to move them to rollers. Two are also very bothered that their deodorants work and so we buy ones that are advertised as very effective, like Mitcham. I don't think they need to worry, but they do. One has just started using a solid stick type deodorant which I like: she likes the musk smell (its marketed for men).

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? I initially bought aluminium free ones, as I thought this was a better idea. However, they use so many toiletries and sprays, that it seemed unnecessary to focus on aluminium free for their deodorant (rightly or not).

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? No, They just seemed to graduate from body sprays when they were 12 or so, and then started using deodorant. I bought sprays initially as they seemed most similar to the body sprays they were used to.

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? It varies: one only uses roll-on, one uses stick and ones uses spray! For economy, I think stick ones are best.

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? We all like the scent of fresh cotton type ones.

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? That it works. Also that it doesn't leave marks on clothes.

What about anti-mark deodorants? We purchase these as the marks on clothes - either white powder on dark clothes, or the yellow stains from other - is really off putting.

I haven't started buying deodorant for my child yet. I use it daily though, i've told her she may need it when she's older but while she's young she's fine. I don't have a set brand, I just get a random one that smells nice when i'm in the shop!

socat · 09/09/2018 12:39

I prefer roll-on, quick n easy and doesn't upset the cat!!!

Also can freshen up easily on the go!

And doesn't leave any mess. (some sprays are chalky!)

I'm easy as I like multiple fragrances so have many on the go

JJJWWW · 09/09/2018 12:40

I use spray, either Dove or Sure as I think they smell nicer and last longer than others.

chris8888 · 09/09/2018 12:57

I only buy roll on and encouraged my daughter to do the same. I feel it is hard to teach young people the danger of aerosols, for example not spraying in a confined space. I like the dove roll on as it is not too sticky. I also think a roll on is easy to pop in your bag and I encourage my teenager to do the same.

What deodorant do you buy and why? I don’t buy deodorant alone, only antiperspirant. I use the Sure solid stick.

Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? DD doesn’t really need antiperspirant yet, but I have let her have a deodorant body spray, which she chose herself. I think it was Impulse.

Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? No, as above she doesn’t really need it, although I have explained that she will, in the fullness of time!

Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? I prefer a stick, DD a spray

Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents?
I like a scent, but nothing too strong or intrusive. Something clean/ linen-y

What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? Efficacy (of the antiperspirant)

What about anti-mark deodorants? They don’t work in my experience

twinklenic · 09/09/2018 13:11

my elder two children are now 19 and 18 and both started using deodorant in year 6 as they asked to have it. My son has always been a sweaty child so he really did need to start using it then but my daughter just wanted to feel grown up i think

Mumminmum · 09/09/2018 13:33

I prefer spray as sometimes the roll ons will roll on too thick a layer and irritate the skin.

ThemisA · 09/09/2018 13:38

I prefer roll on and find I need it some times and not at others. I started my teenager child on roll on but they switched to spray.

sm2012 · 09/09/2018 13:59

My daughter doesn't need deodorant yet but I keep checking her school shirts for signs of smelliness just in case! When she does start using it I will get her a roll on as I think otherwise she will spray too much or have the nozzle of the spray facing to her face or something!

JDSTER · 09/09/2018 14:24

During the working week I use Dove roll on because it doesn’t make me itch and I like the smell. Weekend/days off etc I use a deodorant rather than anti perspirant to reduce aluminium usage slightly. I prefer a fragranced product to an unfragranced one, just preference really, with a ‘clean’ smell like Dove.

For my son, who has just started needing deodorant I buy ‘keep it kind’ boys deodorant (only comes in a spray), again trying to minimise aluminium usage for as long as we can get away with it. It’s not that easy to find (big Sainsbury’s sell it) so it would be good to have more choice of similar products.

Elizasmum02 · 09/09/2018 14:25

my daughter uses dove roll on she doesnt like sprays they make her sneeze

lizd31 · 09/09/2018 14:35

I've always used an antiperspirant deodorant but recently developed lots of allergies. I've always been sensitive to deodorants so use a sensitive one but now I'm concerned about the chemicals in them as I've become hypersensitive to anything chemicals including their smell so I've just this week ordered an organic one but have yet to try it. It gets good reviews although it's just an anti-perspirant, not a deodorant but I tend not to have a problem with B.O. anyway

jamiethepaper · 09/09/2018 14:41

I find the aerosol versions get used too excessively, while the roll ons are not a great size for kids despite being my preferred option

glennamy · 09/09/2018 14:52

I prefer Dove spray whereas daughter uses the roll on... I also buy some of the own brands for trips away and holidays where they seem to go missing.

HelenPlant · 09/09/2018 15:00

My DD is too young for deodorant, but I have tried many different ones to find one that I really like. It is scent-free stick that you rub on and doesn't leave horrible white marks on everything. I wouldn't use another variety now.

Shesawinner1989 · 09/09/2018 15:03

My mum has always used dove so I started as a teen and have never changed it, it’s the best I love it!

Beki16 · 09/09/2018 15:10

I prefer a roll on to a spray and use either dove or sure. My son however prefers to use sprays.
When shopping for deodrants, I always buy ones that don't leave a white mark as we both wear a lot of dark clothing. As for scent, I tend to go for something subtle but clean smelling.

finleypop · 09/09/2018 15:32

I use Lush deodorant powder as I am allergic to all the others I have ever tried. My son has no such problems, he will use whatever is on offer

helly01pbo · 09/09/2018 16:24

I use spray Sure deoderant and we go for fresh scents. I like the ones that smell like fresh linen!

Personally I don't believe any deoderant is completely anti-mark though. I've not come across one yet anyway.

whiteroseredrose · 09/09/2018 16:33

DD and I both buy any deodorant that has a leaping bunny, vegan or other cruelty free trade mark.

In terms of scent, nothing too sweet or fruity (hence not Lush). Prefer something drier like a sea breeze type. Spray rather than roll on if possible but the cruelty free part is priority.

Daffodil2016 · 09/09/2018 16:33

My children prefer sprays. We buy whatever is on offer as they get through it so quick!

pinkjjf27 · 09/09/2018 16:46

I buy roll ons only as I do not like arosol as they are bad for the environment . I try to buy roll ons that are incased in glass rather than plastic. I perfer natural ingredients as i have a very sensitive skin . My childen are too young yet but when the time somes i would buy the most gentle produce i can find.

AnimalAddict · 09/09/2018 16:50

I always use Sure deodorant, I think it's so reliable and works a dream for me, I love the Pink Blush one! :)

APJ1 · 09/09/2018 16:51

I use either a Nivea or Dove spray. They work well. I've used roll-ons in the past but they just don't make me feel anywhere near as fresh and you don't get that cooling sensation.
