Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My daughter who is 9 just got her first deo. We bought an aluminium free stick, which is a little sticky but keeps her fresh. My go to must have deo is Dove, but it's the powder fresh scent which I always have friends bring me back when they are Stateside. I prefer the American sticks as they're bigger and more 'powdery' in texture.

I use the original dove spray but alternate between the different fragrances as I’ve noticed if I use the same one all of the time I don’t smell as pleasant and have a bit of a sweaty smell.. I also bought a roll-on a few months back as it was on offer, and I’ve started alternating between that an the spray but when I use the roll-on I feel like I’m missing something so have started using a Victoria secrets body mist when I use that.

My DD who’s nearly 8 has started to get the occasional pongy arm pits, so I got her a roll-on as I was thinking it’s more gentle than a spray and I was worried about her breathing the spray in (not sure what my logic is there) but she wanted to be like me and use a spray so I’ve done the roll-on and body mist thing.

What I would be interested in is a range of more fruity/floral sents as your products work well, and a body mist range as the ones in the supermarkets aren’t great.

I'm a big fan of regular washing with proper soap to minimise stinkiness. Deodorant wise non scented non aerosol.

Ashhead24 · 07/09/2018 17:05

Sure max protection bought in bulk from Amazon to make it cheaper. Used to use dove sticks but they stopped being effective when I became pregnant. I absolutely hate wet deodorant! And sprays just don't seem to work.

Limelighthydrangea · 07/09/2018 17:14

Like others I love the original scent and always use the spray. I have never bought it for my teenage son who tends to go for the sporty and named ranges. Do Dove do more ‘masculine’ targeted products? For my son great scent, anti white and effectiveness are all important.

custardcream1000 · 07/09/2018 17:15

I use pitrok. I like the fact it's natural and it's the best deodorant I've used.

DunesOfSand · 07/09/2018 17:20

I buy whatever roll-on is on offer, ideally one which lives "upside down" ie cap at bottom. Im not loyal.
I'm also hoping the kids take after DH, who never wears deodrant, and never smells of BO. Life is unfair! Otherwise I'm going to need a crash course in male deodorant. Why the difference between men's and women's, btw?

popsocks · 07/09/2018 17:31

I am actually using a dove roll on at the moment. It is my preferred deodorant, I have very sensitive skin so have to be careful which i use. I also prefer the roll ons to the sprays.
I have tried a variety of roll ons, but get so sore to the point my underarms are open and weeping. I always go back to dove.
My daughter prefers sprays and dosent have a preference to which one. She is currently using a sure spray, was in offer so got for her to try.
My son uses lots of lynx black, but ran out so used his dads loreal for men. He has decided he prefers that.

BigBlueBubble · 07/09/2018 17:37

I’ve always bought Soft and Gentle spray. I vaguely recall it being marketed (years ago) as a product that doesn’t sting after shaving. I tried others which did sting so I just kept buying Soft and Gentle. Don’t want to buy a different one, find out it stings and have to throw it away.

I don’t buy deodorant for my child. Children don’t need deodorant until puberty.

TheWizardofWas · 07/09/2018 17:42

I have only bought one roll on for DD, who is 13. It was a salt stick from a health food shop. Am not keen on antiperspirant, deodorant. The NHS on a school visit has told my DS's class- aged 9 - that they should wear deodorant. I am not convinced personally. Enough washing, clean clothes - fine by me. I rember the X-Ray Spex song....germ free adolescents........

MrsMarigold · 07/09/2018 17:45

I use Dove Maximum Protection cream stick, I am a very sweaty person but also prone to bad skin reactions and not a big fan of anything over scented. I can only use a cream, all others burn and cause spots. I like original clean it smells nice.

I used to use Mitchum but became allergic to it. My DH did too, but now also uses Dove men clean comfort, he cycles loads and it seems to do the job and isn't very strongly scented either.

inashizzle · 07/09/2018 18:03

Explaining the simple cycle of thoroughly washing , deodorant , and always fresh clothes helped my daughters to quickly get it all on board. We used stick deodorants first to avoid marks, gentleness, especially after shaving and for ease.

Our eldest daughter thought that toiletry sets were the most boring presents on earth until she had lived her first term away at Uni. Since then the Dove shower and deodorant sets have been massively appreciated. Gone from taken for granted essentials to luxurious !

thornyhousewife · 07/09/2018 18:07

I use the Dove original cream stick because it's reliable and dries instantly. I find roll ons a bit sticky and wet.

plusonefail · 07/09/2018 18:21

I use a stick preferably but if I can’t find one I like the smell of I get a roll on. I haven’t used a spray deodorant since I was a teenager in the 90s - something about them seems very teenage for some reason, plus they take up too much room in your bag.

FindTheCupForMax · 07/09/2018 18:21

We are not at the stage of deodorant with DC yet, but when I first started using it my DM turned it in to a positive (rather than about smelling sweaty etc) and talked about how it meant I was growing up and we went to superdrug and spent time testing out all of the different scents to find one that I liked

I use sure at the moment, pretty much because it's the brand I started with, although the scent I use has changed. I don't like the roll on/cream ones so stick with a spray

Queenofmyownheart · 07/09/2018 18:26

I wear Nivea stress protect plus spray deodorant. It's the only one I find actually keeps me smelling fresh all day, I have a physical job in an environment with no air conditioning (!) so tend to sweat it out A LOT at work so I always buy this particular Nivea. The rest I find I start to smell by the end of a shift. My DC are not at deodorant age yet but I imagine I will probably start them on a stick, as I personally find roll ons uncomfortably sticky and pretty rubbish 😂

QuestionableMouse · 07/09/2018 18:38

I've been using the dove sensitive one. I found a lot of the highly scented ones were making my underarms very sore.

It works well but I'm finding I have to reapply while I'm at work

Chelsea26 · 07/09/2018 18:49

I’m a particularly sweaty person (I don’t smell though!) I have to use a roll on deodorant and then a spray top to keep dry

sarat1 · 07/09/2018 18:50

I use Sanex as it doesn't irritate my sensitive skin and works well. Use a roll on but happy with their stick as well, just buy whichever is on deal.

RockinHippy · 07/09/2018 19:11

Pit Roc. It's as natural as it gets & worked well enough, without any of the nasty skin reactions she was prone to with certain chemical additives. As chemical free as possible was my priority fir this.

HermanCakeDestroyer · 07/09/2018 19:16

I buy dove roll ons for myself and my teenage DD. I usually buy them when they are on special offer. I have found recently that they are not lasting as long as they used to. We use roll on as my son has asthma and so we avoid sprays. We like fresh scents like cucumber and cotton but would also welcome lemon scents. I think my daughter would be more likely to opt for them herself if the packaging was more teenage friendly.

1969angep · 07/09/2018 19:26

I like the compact Aerosols as you can easily pop them in a bag etc. I prefer an unscented version and tend to favour Sanex, Dove and Nivea. DS is not old enough for me to worry about him yet

sharond101 · 07/09/2018 19:38

I buy a mix of roll on for everyday and spray for after exercise. I buy whatever is best value but don't like soft and gentle as it leaves white marks. My children aren't old enough for deodorant yet.

daniel1996 · 07/09/2018 19:39

I love Dove's go fresh cucumber deodorant stick, it smells lovely and I feel confident, I try to check for a deodorant which is aluminium and paraben free, there are several around when I can find one I will use them too, my DS uses a deodorant when playing football, and training so I choose a fragrance free one, the latest is salt of the earth as it is reasonably priced, lasts months and months and is totally fragrance free. Keeping fresh and smelling good makes you confident, there is nothing worse than smelly pits.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 07/09/2018 19:40

I like them to have as little scent as possible, and generally buy the ones that advertise themselves as leaving no white marks.

I'd personally be interested in companies making their product entirely plastic-free and recyclable.

For my children, I started them with roll-ons, at the beginning of secondary school, as I feel they are more gentle than the sprays.
