Deodorant for a lot of people is a staple in their daily routine and there will come a time when you have to buy your child/children their first deodorant too, if you haven’t already! Therefore Dove would love to find out about all your experiences and preferences when it comes to deodorant for both your child and yourself.

Here’s what Dove have to say: “At Dove, all of our anti-perspirant products deliver reliable all day protection against sweat and odour with a gentle formula, which cares for delicate underarm skin. We know that you want to make the best choices for your teenagers when it comes to the products they use on their skin. We want to hear what is important to you when it comes to selecting products for yourself and your teenagers!”

What deodorant do you buy and why? Did you buy a specific kind of deodorant for your child’s first one? Did you have a chat with your child on how and why they needed to start using it? Do you or your child prefer spray, roll-on or stick? Are there any scents you love or do you go for the ones without scents? What is the most important factor for you when buying a deodorant for yourself and/or your child? What about anti-mark deodorants?

Whatever you and/or your child’s experiences are around deodorant, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I use roll-on - I find the spray type makes me cough. DS3 recently uses spray-on, which I hate, as his room smells of it after he leaves for school and I feel like I'm choking while I make his bed!

We use whatever is on offer, but I do make sure mine is one of the invisible ones - I hate getting marks on my clothes.

omgitslani · 20/09/2018 08:44

I have always been a sweaty person and my girl seems to have inherited this from me, so we spoke early on about the importance of using deodorant, if anything just for confidence. We both use Mitchum products; I use the sticks and she prefers the spray.

lorrainej162 · 20/09/2018 09:04

I use Nivea black and white fresh or Sure invisible pure, depending on what's on offer, both are reliable and smell nice and don't stain my clothes.

qate · 20/09/2018 09:32

Another Dove roll-on user here - brilliant stuff. Not a fan of the cream as I find it leaves marks, and scarred by spray on deodrants from my teenage years where the white dust would drop all over everything if you didn't do it far enough away!

KentUnicorn · 20/09/2018 11:38

The boys are really keen to use sprays with strong aftershave type smells because it seems grown up. I'm not a fan but if it gets them using it it'll have to do!

holey · 20/09/2018 11:52

I found with my daughter, she was wanting to use perfumed spray deodorants at about 9 or 10, using them as perfumes just because she wanted to smell nice. Both my sons went through that period in their early teens where you can tell they need deodorant but they don't want to or can't be bothered so it is like when they are little and you're saying "Have you cleaned your teeth?" and sending them up to do it and they're getting grumpy.

I've always preferred spray perfumed deodorants, such as Nivea and my daughter uses them too although she prefers sweeter, more girly scents. Both my boys use Sure spray deodorants. I never really though about whether they should be using anything different to an adult to be honest.

baconbap · 20/09/2018 12:04

Trying to avoid the aluminium ones.

grannybiker · 20/09/2018 13:12

Sometimes they're keen to start using them before they get to the stinky pit stage as other friends use them. I used to help out taking year 6 children swimming and the changing room was toxic due to those who used them and didn't need to and those who didn't use them and should have!

thisone2 · 20/09/2018 13:56

I use roll-on it's stronger, but I open the applicator and water it down!

piggypoo · 20/09/2018 18:24

Currently we have been using Vaseline deodorant. It seems to be the longest lasting. My DD, 17, found that loads of different brands seemed not to be good enough, either they didn't stop wetness or odour, or both!
I find the Vaseline effective for both of us, the scent is lovely and fresh, and lasts all day long.

Jocelynne123 · 20/09/2018 18:36

I like roll ons but will use a spray if it's hot and I need something extra. I made sure my daughter used deodorant as I know how hurtful children can be.
I gave my daughter dove first because I thought it would be softer on her skin but it gave her a reaction so now she uses the same as me. Xx

PhilTB54 · 20/09/2018 19:41

Luggage stollen .Used real lemons when on hols in Spain. Worked a treat. Pitrok Stick Deodorant . Natures mineral deodorant. Does not clog pores .

sunshinewithabitofdrizzle · 20/09/2018 20:10

I use Mitchum Unscented roll on for myself and my daughter uses one of the scented ones. I've tried Dove and other brand deodorants over the years but Mitchum is the only one that's worked consistently and the smell doesn't bother me. I don't recall what was said at the time my daughter started using deodorant, I think I just bought her one or she came with me and picked out the scent she liked. She started only using it when she was going to sports or parties etc, but obviously as time went on I made sure she used it daily. I did have to remind her most days, the same way I'd have to remind her to brush her teeth, but it didn't take long to "stick".

imustbemadme · 20/09/2018 21:35

I bought my girls roll-ons for their first deodorant. I've never used these myself so it wasn't long before they moved on to sprays but I don't like them breathing in the chemicals from aerosol deodorants and have always made sure they understand about having ventilation and just generally not using so much of it! I also worry about them using antiperspirant, I feel a deodorant is healthier.

I do tend to buy whatever is on offer although the Dove cream roll on smells wonderful!

maria08k · 20/09/2018 21:36

I currently use Sure as its the only deodorant to keep my sweating at bay. I also prefer the spray to the roll on.

jamielmdjs · 20/09/2018 23:19

They were always fascinated seeing us spray ours so at the earliest opportunity they got a little spray. Got them used to the idea, smells nice, and seeing it getting used all the time it was easy to get them to use it. Definitely preferred spray on.

BrendasUmbrella · 20/09/2018 23:49

I didn't explain how to use it carefully enough, DS was spraying it on over his clothes. Now he likes to use Lynx. I keep meaning to get him something with a more subtle scent.

snare · 21/09/2018 06:48

I buy for my girls what I use myself

VickyRsuperstar · 21/09/2018 08:31

We use the Dove solid stick deodorant, mainly because I have asthma and spray deodorants irritate my lungs and roll ons feel too sticky and take too long to dry. Dove solid sticks suit us all well and last ages.

Jade5093 · 21/09/2018 10:26

Prefer a roll on to spray

womblelancs · 21/09/2018 11:01

Last winter, I found that whatever deodorant or antiperspirant I used, nothing works. Although I didn't smell, I was sweating profusely all the time, and it went on for months and months, and I was getting really stressed about it. I tried several different brands, but it made no difference. The roll-ons were sticky, the cream sticks just made a mess of my clothes and the spray ones smelled horrible and made my nose hurt. In the end, a friend recommended one of those natural mineral salt deodorants with no perfumes or other chemicals. Despite my initial scepticism, I tried it and, to my amazement it actually worked. Even though it's only a deodorant and not an anti-perspirant, I found within a couple of days that I was far more comfortable, and it doesn't leave marks on my clothes at all. I've been using it for several months now and am really happy with it.

MinaPaws · 21/09/2018 11:27

I use Clarins Eau Ressourcante spray. It's very expensive if you think of it as a deodrant but really good value if you think of it as an alternative to perfume. It smells so good and fresh and not artificial. And it doesn't sting if applied soon after shaving.

Dove's OK. I like the scents usually - subtle and mild. I buy the the Clean Care Comfort for teen DSs sometimes - or Nivea - which ever one Superdrug has on offer. They insist on aerosol. I've talked about being green with them, bought them roll ons and sprays which they never use. I don't understand why but they seem to think aerosols work better. I'd be happy for aerosols to be phased out entirely.

DC started out with Lynx, because that's what the big boys at school wore. But I've banned Lynx from the house now because if the DSs spray it, even three rooms away on a different floor of the house from me, it brings on an asthma attack. Whatever they put in that must be evil.

DSs used to love buying deodrant when they first started using it. I think they thought it was very grown up to be hanging out the men's grooming section of Superdrug aged 8 or 9. But now they just ask me to get it for them. They had a sudden hormone surge in Yr 4-5 then stopped smelling for a couple of years before teens hit and then they needed to be asked to shower daily.

I have had to explain the deodrant goes onto the armpit itself, not on the school shirt, under the arms, which is where DS2 always seems to try and spray it. Better than nothing I suppose...

Twiglet1983 · 21/09/2018 12:53

I use a Dove roll on, my husband doesn't use any but doesn't smell! If I didn't use deodorant I'd stink. Odd. Son isn't old enough to worry about it yet.

cathyov · 21/09/2018 13:13

I tend to try different ones and all three of my DD did the same although the middle DD preferred to use men's deodorants as she thought them more effective.
I have roll ons and sprays; I find the former better but only if you have time to let it dry.

Dove original is my favourite!
