What do you add to your laundry? Find out what Mumsnet users told Fairy Non Bio

NOW CLOSED

Laundry can be a personal thing, and with many products you can add to your detergent to ensure your laundry is just how you like it, Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the things you choose to add to your wash - and why.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “What are you looking for to give a little extra 'oomph' in your washing - stain removal action? Softness boost? Colour care? anti-odour or allergy protection? If you could add one power you wish your detergent did for you without the extras what would it be”

Do you add fabric softener to all of your washes, or omit it when you’re washing towels or bedding? Perhaps you have a preferred method for adding stain removers? Maybe you use colour catchers so you don’t need to do separate washes? If you use fabric softener, do you follow pack recommendations for dosage or gleefully pour it in?

All who post on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I use fabric conditioner very sparingly as I find most detergents leave the clothes soft and smelling lovely, plus I am not a fan of the odour they leave. I add antibacterial cleanser to my wash, especially towels and underwear. If I do a 30 minute quick wash of school uniform and put the whole lot in (including white socks) I add a colour catcher (and find the supermarket own brand as good at the market leader - good tip) to give me a non-iron uniform ready for the next day.

Fabric softener with every wash, I like to change it depending on the season as I like different scents.

Also with white washes, particularly school shirts, i’ll add in a touch of vanish to get them really white.

zoemellor · 30/06/2018 00:06

I add comfort pure for extra softness and a clean smell

zoemellor · 30/06/2018 00:08

I only use comfort pure and fairy as different detergents set off skin issues with my children but this combination seems to be good for all the family

daniel1996 · 30/06/2018 09:02

I put a capful of fairy fabric conditioner in every wash - towels, sheets, clothes and underwear, the delicate fragrance it leaves and the softness it adds to clothing is just right (I find other fabric conditioners which I have tried - which leave an overpowering smell, and absorbency is compromised on towels) If I I am doing a mixed wash I always add a colour catcher.

I always use powder as liquids/tabs have clogged my machine up before. Powder seems to get everything cleaner anyway. I rotate fabric softeners quite often as I get used to the smell eventually. I always end up going back to Fairy softener though as it smells so good! It reminds me of when DS was tiny and I had loads of babygrows and nappies on the line in the sunshine all the time. I always wait til it's on special offer though as it's not cheap. If school stuff is really grubby I put some Vanish Gold in. With towels I just use a half dose of powder on a hot wash, nothing else. Somehow if I use softener or more powder they come out even more like cardboard.

I add stain remover when there is heavy staining. I always add fabric conditioner and I do “gleefully” pour it in! I use a colour catcher when I have a mixed colour wash eg lights with some dark patterning. I also use dettol wash disinfectant occasionally when there are urine/faeces staining on children’s clothes.

PolkerrisBeach · 05/07/2018 17:07

Absolutely nothing! We are lucky enough to have very soft water so don't need a separate softener or other products. As long as you buy decent detergent, it's perfectly sufficient.

Summergarden · 06/07/2018 06:11

As long as I use biological powder I find most stains come out. If an item is very dirty I soak it in non bio for an hour first.

I always use fabric softener too.

PorridgeAgainAbney · 09/07/2018 09:03

I just use Ecover (which isn't brilliant on the sun-creamed necks of white school shirts to be honest, but we have eczema and it's the only brand that doesn't make any of us itch). I don't use fabric softener as I don't like the gloopiness of it, I feel like everything needs an extra rinse afterwards, so I just give towels a 10 minute blast in the tumble dryer to stop them feeling like cardboard.

I like one poster's idea of adding lavender oil to the wash, but I wouldn't know how much to add to make sure it gives a slight scent without being too astringent and damaging the machine?

helcrai · 15/07/2018 13:38

I always use fabric softener in all my washes. I have a non bio one for the kids stuff (usually Fairy as I like the smell and find it doesn't irritate my eldest's skin as she has eczema) and tend to try different brands/smells for the adult's clothes. For my bedding I always add a large dose as I like it to smell really fresh. I sometimes add a little Zoflora discinfectant to the last rinse if I'm washing a pile of stinky socks/undies! I don't use stain remover very often as I think it can be harsh on sensitive skin. If I had one super power it would be to have a magic infrared light or similar that would get rid of all stains on every item of washing first time.

MaGratgarlik1983 · 15/07/2018 17:44

I just use fairy non bio tabs.

TARNYS · 19/07/2018 04:54

I always add a fabric conditioner to every wash. I also add a white stain remover to my whites and a coloured stain remover to my colours.

I never stick to the proper cap dosage. I like everything to smell fresh and clean.

butunlikely · 19/07/2018 13:48

I use fairy fabric softener but not for towels - mostly for baby clothes these days!

BadlyWrittenPoem · 20/07/2018 20:52

I add fairy washing up liquid to stains.

Bonniesloth · 25/07/2018 09:00

I add vanish to the white wash I do once a week, I use non bio powder for everything, a gentle fabric conditioner for the kids clothes and a more grown up luxurious one for mine and dh’s stuff. I use Dettol if anyone is poorly.

FiveShelties · 25/07/2018 11:12

I do not use fabric softener but do use half the recommended dose of powder with the same amount of soda crystals. My washing and washer remain lovely and clean.

Belmo · 25/07/2018 11:14

Just clothes, water and a scoop of non bio I’m afraid.

SillyMoomin · 26/07/2018 11:22

always fairy non bio, a mild fabric softener and if whites, a good scoop of ecover laundry bleach

Love my washing to smell clean and airy

WarmHugs · 26/07/2018 12:16

I wish my detergent could iron my clothes after washing them!

Havingkittens04 · 27/07/2018 08:07

Non-bio liquitab, fabric softener, laundry cleanser and scent boosters.....x

I am going to be frugal and sensible and use it for Christmas presents (and some new clothes for me!). This was such a lovely surprise, thanks mumsnet!

Cosmia · 16/08/2018 13:30

I'd love softer clothes - despite using loads more softener than recommended everything is always really crunchy as we are in such a hard water area. I long to have soft fluffy towels, not scratchy horrid ones!

ProteinIsGood · 16/08/2018 23:10

I sometimes add a bit of fragrant liquid to give it a certain scent I want such as lavender (mhmm), otherwise I tend to just use normal washing powder as that does the job most of the time.
