What do you add to your laundry? Find out what Mumsnet users told Fairy Non Bio

NOW CLOSED

Laundry can be a personal thing, and with many products you can add to your detergent to ensure your laundry is just how you like it, Fairy Non Bio would like to hear about the things you choose to add to your wash - and why.

Here’s what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “What are you looking for to give a little extra 'oomph' in your washing - stain removal action? Softness boost? Colour care? anti-odour or allergy protection? If you could add one power you wish your detergent did for you without the extras what would it be”

Do you add fabric softener to all of your washes, or omit it when you’re washing towels or bedding? Perhaps you have a preferred method for adding stain removers? Maybe you use colour catchers so you don’t need to do separate washes? If you use fabric softener, do you follow pack recommendations for dosage or gleefully pour it in?

All who post on the thread below will be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I only use powder detergent, usually non bio, and very little fabric softener (probably a quarter dose).
I add a few drops of essential oil (lavender, rose or neroli) to the conditioner dispenser - it adds a subtle perfume and as often as possible I line dry everything- nothing can beat the smell of line-dried laundry. If only you could bottle that aroma!

butunlikely · 22/06/2018 21:58

I add fabric softener to any of the baby clothes washes but tend to skip it for my own as usually includes a towel and the softener makes them rubbish!

Kursk · 23/06/2018 12:42

I make my own laundry powder. I don’t find that I need any fabric softeners.

ChristmasTablecloth · 23/06/2018 19:23

I use fabric conditioner, except for on the towels wash. I do separate washes for towels because they are rough and go on a higher temperature than clothing.

I don't add anything else - no disinfectants or "laundry cleansers". I prefer to pre-treat.

Grimy collars and cuffs get a spray with pre-wash stain remover.

Grass or anything oily gets a rub with cold water and fairy liquid.

Blood is soaked out in cold water and salt and line dried after washing in the sun.

Sweaty armpits get rubbed with cold water and Dettol soap.

Non bio powder, that's all.

I'd buy a non bio powder with extra (non allergenic) softener added though.

Oh stain remover! So sick of getting stuff out of the wash and finding the marks haven't come out. Seriously considering banning tomato based pasta sauces until we're out of "pale summer clothes" season...

Queenofthedrivensnow · 24/06/2018 15:59

Zoflora and white vinegar and I use aldi or Lidl powder

caringcarer · 24/06/2018 21:24

I add Biotex to whites and fabric conditioner to final rinse. I like to line dry whites but tumble towels after to fluff them up.

FogCutter · 25/06/2018 07:23

Blimey I didn't know there were so many things you could add to a wash!

I just use washing powder/ gel and a fabric softener.

madja · 25/06/2018 09:19

I use colour catchers and a small amount of softener (but not with towels) Use an oxi clean type product with whites.
For me, I would love extra softness in the basic product so towels etc would be softer without the use of conditioner.

Sassysarahh · 25/06/2018 09:48

I use fairy sax 2 my girls suffere excess. If stubborn marks I'll use a little vanish or vanufh hold do an extra rinnse then add comfort pue xx

queenoftheschoolrun · 25/06/2018 15:59

I was going to say I didn't add anything but then realised that wasn't true. I add stain remover when needed.

Sassysarahh · 25/06/2018 17:52

Jellyslice have you tried putting near fairy liquid onto the arm pits and really scrubbing them with a plastic scrubbing brush ..... honestly I was tortured for years with school and sports tops from my 3 daughters BO SCHOOL SWEAT AND AFTER EFFECTS IF FAKE TAN YUCK .... now before I even think about it a good dollop of washing up liquid under both bits scrub like like mad then was if poss a bit hotter 40-60 usual amount of wash and comfort it definately helps !!!!!

Sassysarahh · 25/06/2018 17:56

Allotment123 · 25/06/2018 18:12

Bicarb and nappy soak

ThenBellaDidSomethingVeryKind · 25/06/2018 23:34

I have always added fabric conditioner to my usual bio laundry tablets, but have noticed how claggy/scummy that section of the machine drawer is getting. I might ditch it. Interested to read about the soda crystals, might try those instead!

79lauren79 · 26/06/2018 15:47

Washing powder and a scoop of stain remover if it needs it. I also pre treat stains with a spray to get them as soon as possible

theredjellybean · 26/06/2018 18:29

aldi equivalent of vanish bright white stuff on white washes, and sports kit

VanGoghsDog · 26/06/2018 20:02

I add a drop of Zoflora now and then to combats smells. I have to use non bio powder and I sometimes feel it's not quite got the 'oomph' as you put it.

lovemyflipflops · 26/06/2018 21:16

I use fabric softener on shirts, school trousers, woollens, and socks, I never use fabric softener on towels - I find absorbance is comprised. If I have a quick mixed wash I will always add a colour catcher - it always comes out grey. Finally there is nothing better than sheets which have had a wash and a good blow on the washing line.

yikesanotherbooboo · 27/06/2018 06:32

Lidl bio powder for whites/ towels
Lidl colour liquid for the rest
Soak stained items in vanish
Soak BO ridden clothes in antibac washing up liquid + powder
No fabric conditioner

ncullinane · 27/06/2018 23:29

I use Fairy liquid in the drum, and then fairy softener in the draw but don't add for towels. I sometimes use vanish in tough stains

jacqui5366 · 28/06/2018 07:49

I use fairy conditioner on my underwear, linen, and everyday clothes, but not on towels. If the wash is heavily stained I turn up the temperature, and add a dose of stain remover and a colour catcher - that normally does the trick.

finova · 28/06/2018 19:58

I just use non bio liquid tabs (often Fairy).
I think it smells nice and not overpowering.
The less chemicals the better in my book.

Sometimes, I think my whites could be brighter, even though I wash separately. Might try adding a brightener as haven’t before.
