NOW CLOSED

Mums(netters) know best when it comes to stain removal and that’s why Fairy Non Bio wants to hear about the stain removing secrets you have up your sleeve.

Here is what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “With the summer holidays on the horizon, we know all those BBQs with ketchup, Pimms and playing on the grass is going to give you a bit more of a challenge with your laundry. What are your quick tricks of the trade when faced with a stain?”

What’s your go-to method for removing red wine stains? Do you use the classic technique of adding white wine straight away, or is there a trick that we’re missing? Do you use kitchen staples for stain removal: perhaps vinegar or salt? Perhaps you have a method for removing tough grease stains that you swear by?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

my go to stain remover is adding salt to the stain to draw it out of the clothes esp for red wine

I use vanish pretreatment on clothes and then wash as normal . Always removes stubborn stains and as a wife of a chef there are lots of food stains to remove!

Grass stains come out well with neat washing up liquid and a lot of elbow grease.

lorrainej162 · 19/06/2018 08:15

Vanish stain remover spray has never let me down.

caygijan · 19/06/2018 08:31

I try and use a stain remover and just keep washing the item till the stain goes or isn't as noticable!

Pimmpom · 19/06/2018 09:21

I rub concentrated Fairy onto stain and leave for a while before washing. Seems to do the trick for most stains.

Leanfun · 19/06/2018 09:36

Rice in cold water as soon as poss. Wash and then put out in sunlight if you are lucky enough for it to be sunny.

My husband is always getting ink and biro stains on his work shirts. My scientist brother in law recommended dabbing with a cloth soaked in methylated spirits, which dissolves the ink, then wash. It works- just be careful with using a highly flammable liquid!

Bleach and a nail brush work wonders!

I find it useful to imagine how much the landlord is going to charge you for a carpet stain to get into the correct mindset. Once you're in the zone, I find a combo of elbow grease, swearing quietly, and regular over the counter cleaning products does the job. This worked for me just last week when the cat decided to explode. Alas, our duvet didn't survive the cat's sudden evacuations.

Wash with vanish then hang on the line in direct sunlight. Sun has got rid of many unmentionable stains on my sons clothing.

AutumnElla · 19/06/2018 13:02

I find hanging stuff out to dry in the sun bleches a lot of stains out.

Vanish soap is my life! From board marker, to baked bean juice. From grass stains to orange juice its gets rid of them all!! I use the stick Vanish soap which i rub into the area of clothing with the stain ( pre dampened ) and give it a good rub/scrub. The rinse and add some more or the soap bar to the area before i wash in the machine.

Jade5093 · 19/06/2018 13:45

Soak asap!

tishist · 19/06/2018 14:20

Sunlight is meant to be a great stain remover, non-toxic too! Moving to somewhere with a garden soon so will be able to try it out.

Chrisboswell9281 · 19/06/2018 16:39

Vanish. not a stain that cant be removed (yet)!!

lolamia91 · 19/06/2018 18:02

Depending on the stain but soaking it first is always your best option!

bex552 · 19/06/2018 19:37

Wash clothes and if stains remain hang them on the line outside, or on a windowsill if you don't have a line, and leave it there for a few days, the sunshine will remove the stain! Saved many of my children clothes!

Blondie1982 · 19/06/2018 19:45

I always google Aggie and Kim for help when removing stains

otter099008 · 19/06/2018 19:46

I put the clothes in cold water almost immediately to leave it to soak. I was told that hot water can 'bake' the stain in so I make sure it's cold water, before putting it in for a long wash.

GeorgeW78 · 19/06/2018 20:01

Rinse stains from the back so you're not sending them through the fabric and use stain remover from the outside edge of the stain and work to the centre to prevent spreading it further. Dry in the sun as the light slightly bleaches and helps kill bacteria too.

YayImALlamaAgain · 19/06/2018 20:32

I get all stained clothing straight into the sink to soak, then scrub at the offending stain and put it into the washing machine he same day.

cathwarbur · 19/06/2018 21:19

Tip from my mum, before washing, get rid of grease from clothing by ironing on plain brown paper across the stain and the paper will absorb the grease. This really works every time

Smellophant87 · 19/06/2018 21:52

Prevention is key! But if that doesn't work I soak stains in Vanish then put a scoop in with the wash too.

phillw · 19/06/2018 23:36

A steam cleaner helps shift ground in stains, particularly if they have dried in.
