NOW CLOSED

Mums(netters) know best when it comes to stain removal and that’s why Fairy Non Bio wants to hear about the stain removing secrets you have up your sleeve.

Here is what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “With the summer holidays on the horizon, we know all those BBQs with ketchup, Pimms and playing on the grass is going to give you a bit more of a challenge with your laundry. What are your quick tricks of the trade when faced with a stain?”

What’s your go-to method for removing red wine stains? Do you use the classic technique of adding white wine straight away, or is there a trick that we’re missing? Do you use kitchen staples for stain removal: perhaps vinegar or salt? Perhaps you have a method for removing tough grease stains that you swear by?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

The key to most stains is not letting them dry! As soon as one of my DDs has a stain related accident, I whip the item of clothing off them and scrub with water mixed with a little blob of washing liquid.

Best way to remove stains is to attack them straight away with either a wet cloth and washing up liquid, or a smidge of Oxo clean or Vanish. I also find soaking clothes in a bit of Vanish before putting them in the washing machine helps.

I treat all stains the same. I smother in liquid detergent, leave to soak overnight & then wash

katkatgu · 12/06/2018 10:18

soak immediately rather than letting them set in!

I basically use 3 methods either Hydrogen Peroxide, washing up liquid or alcohol .
I usually start with washing up liquid and if that fails progress to the other 2. Generally one of them works.

From experience, act as soon as you make a stain if at all possible.

It's not always easy when you've spilt red wine down your white top at a posh reception. In the latter case resist the waiter trying to douse you in tonic water - or even more bizarrely, white wine vinegar - and ask for plain cold tap water to dab at the stain with a clean damp cloth and soak in cold water overnight as soon as you get home. Never ever use hot water as this will set the stain.

Washing up liquid scrubbed directly on to stain prior to wash. Another favourite of mine is soaking clothes in cold salt water and vanish is always amazing, just pricey!

A carpet cleaner to remove stains on carpets, they really come up a treat.

devito92 · 12/06/2018 12:29

stains are either water based or oil based. You need to use a solvent on all oil based stains pre to going through the wash. Also a owygen based stain remover will help activate the stain removing properties for water based stains

Our old tent had been put away wet (oops!) so it had a bit of mould/mildew on it. We got on so well with that tent, it was a great size and either my patner or I could put it up alone (quicker together) and it still had plenty of life left. I put it in the bath and scattered Fairy non-bio in with tepid water and gave it a good scrub with a broom. It came out good as new! After re-spraying with water repellant it was ready to go.

I was taught cold for starchy stains and hot for sugary stains, so i follow this principle and use vanish stain remover for tough marks.

Rocioo · 12/06/2018 14:38

I use a special soap for stains (it's only about £2) and it works pretty well, removes most of the stains from my baby's clothes.

mollymoo818 · 12/06/2018 14:44

I always end up using the old fashioned methods for removing stains because they work the best and don't damage the clothes like some harsh shop bought products do. My trusted standby's are white wine on red wine stains as long as it is done as soon as you spill and toothpaste on blood stains which works a treat. I have also discovered that the kids rubbers are fantastic for removing marks and stains from anything that is suede.

angiehoggett · 12/06/2018 15:10

White vinegar is great for rubbing into stains before washing if you haven't got any special stain remover.

put them straight into the wash

Teaspoon74 · 12/06/2018 17:41

salt poured onto red wine carpet stains as soon as discovered works a treat - just hoover up and mostly you'll be fine!

I would love to know how to remove formula milk stains from collars and suncream lotion marks from sleeve cuffs!

Ikea1234 · 12/06/2018 17:56

Trest it straight away! Get that stuff out as fast as you can! Pre treat everything before it hits the machine, and whites have a nice hot, long wash to come out sparkling. Can't stand whites that are the colour of bandages!

rhinosuze · 12/06/2018 19:42

Try not to let it set and swear by vanish. Love these threads as I pick up a lot from them

Mozarmstrong · 12/06/2018 20:03

Vanish soap is just brilliant. Also try to spot he stain asap . I've even used a handiwork and gently rub.

giddyypixie · 12/06/2018 20:27

Get some stain remover onto it as soon as possible and get it straight into the washing machine!

twinklenic · 12/06/2018 20:34

soak right away in water. I always dab some vanish on anything tricky and soak for a while .
id love to know what gets whiteboard marker off uniform t-shirts as i still havent managed to sort this one out yet

MouseRatFan · 12/06/2018 21:29

wash it, and then hang it outside to dry. Leave it for a few days if need be.

Seablueeyes · 13/06/2018 00:20

Soak whites in hot water with a squirt of bleach.

lotte321 · 13/06/2018 11:52

Try to soak the item as quickly as possible after getting the stain.

Vanish spray works well I think. Sprayed onto both sides of the stain has always worked well for our family.
