NOW CLOSED

Mums(netters) know best when it comes to stain removal and that’s why Fairy Non Bio wants to hear about the stain removing secrets you have up your sleeve.

Here is what Fairy Non Bio has to say: “With the summer holidays on the horizon, we know all those BBQs with ketchup, Pimms and playing on the grass is going to give you a bit more of a challenge with your laundry. What are your quick tricks of the trade when faced with a stain?”

What’s your go-to method for removing red wine stains? Do you use the classic technique of adding white wine straight away, or is there a trick that we’re missing? Do you use kitchen staples for stain removal: perhaps vinegar or salt? Perhaps you have a method for removing tough grease stains that you swear by?

Whatever your methods are, share them on the thread below to be entered into a prize draw where one MNer will win a £300 voucher for a store of their choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

When all else fails, sunlight seems to work (most of the time anyway!)

badgermum · 18/06/2018 19:55

My top tip is to use a small amount of anti bacterial handwash ( the blue one works best)on a stain and rub in gently and bingo nearly all stains then come out when item is washed

PhilTB54 · 18/06/2018 19:57

As soon as possible mix washing up liquid and enough water to soak the stain and add bicarbonate of soda. It works a treat

Compermo · 18/06/2018 20:03

For any stains, as soon as they've happened, my first resort is a baby wipe. I'm quite amazed at how effective they are. At wash time, any remaining stains, I spray with Vanish liquid and rub before washing. Carpet stains, if my first attempt with baby wipe hasn't removed all of the stain, I try 1001 trouble shooter spray, which I've always found to be pretty good.

Sunlight is great for getting stains out, on white clothes I use lemon juice and put them out in the sun and then was afterwards.

baconbap · 18/06/2018 20:05

Soak in cold water straight away

sammylea80 · 18/06/2018 20:25

Soak in Bicarb of soda for 10 minutes before washing

glmcall123 · 18/06/2018 20:26

Soak in cool water, the stain will set in water higher than 30°, then scrub. The item can be washed in a cool wash after that.

anji2000 · 18/06/2018 20:29

I do all of the above, but I also swear by my tide pen for stains on days out and holidays. Not sure if they have them in the UK so I always stock up when I'm in the States.

piggypoo · 18/06/2018 20:33

Sweat stains, I get an old-fashioned bar of soap, and scrub away, then rinse and put in the machine. Wine, I attack with water rinsed on it asap, then a stain-remover. Vomit, again time is of the essence, so rinse with water, then into the machine with a stain-remover. Hair-dye, is awful, but if caught fast enough, you can save fabrics, that's a very weak solution of bleached water poured through the stain, then into the machine with a stain remover added, and that should work.

Line drying is the best! :)

MAT12 · 18/06/2018 20:45

I just use vanish on any stains and i have no complaints as of yet

PrinceOfCheeses · 18/06/2018 20:53

I use fairy liquid on greasy food stains and throw a bit of Oxy in for whites.

suewilly · 18/06/2018 21:22

I try to attack the stain before it has time to 'set'. I have a nail brush under the sink and as soon as I spot stains on the kid's clothes I make them strip so I can give the stain a good scrub with hot water and liquid soap and occasionally with salt or vinegar, depending of what the stain is.

grannybiker · 18/06/2018 21:45

I pop it straight into cold water ASAP to stop the stain setting. Then I use one of the spray on stain removers before washing.

CGORST · 18/06/2018 21:50

If there is a greasy stain on something, I usually spray a little bit of WD40 (other lubricant sprays are available) on the stain, leave it for 15 minutes, then put a tiny drop of washing up liquid on the stain and leave it for a few minutes more before putting it in the washing machine with the rest of the load. More often than not the stain miraculously disappears! :-)

chrissie4 · 18/06/2018 21:57

On grease stains I use a little bit of Fairy Liquid works a treat

blue25 · 18/06/2018 22:03

Cheap vodka on red wine stains.

Dessallara · 18/06/2018 22:20

Soaking for a couple of hours always helps :)

spanglisher · 18/06/2018 22:45

Sunshine is the best stain remover. I've never forgotten how well a tomato sauce stain completely disappeared after hanging the top on the line in the sun

jamielmdjs · 18/06/2018 23:19

a bit of a disgusting one but, caused by a shaving cut, a little bit of blood can ruin a garment. Enzymes in saliva breaks down blood so spit on the stain. Leave it for a few minutes, then rub, then wash. Works wonders.

On other stains, baking soda really helps lift them.

pinkspideruk · 18/06/2018 23:20

we use vanish on stains - pour hot water on them to start to get asmuch of the stain out as possible (no soap or rubbing) then a vanish paste and leave for at least an hour, before rinsing it off and putting in th wash with another scoop of vnish added to the drum

BrendasUmbrella · 18/06/2018 23:57

I've picked up some tips from this thread! My usual tactic with stains is just to get the garment or at least the stain soaked in water asap, adding some dedicated stain remover if I have some to hand. Then I just wash as usual. It works for me 95% of the time...

clarabella12 · 19/06/2018 00:29

I soak in baking soda overnight.

JS06 · 19/06/2018 06:42

I try to catch stains as they occur and then soak or spray the item with a spritz of Vanish or a solution of washing powder and water and maybe leave them an hour or so or even overnight. Not been beaten yet!
