The team behind the new Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay movie, Wonder, would love to know what Mumsnetters think about the trailer for the film - which opens on 1 December.

PLUS...: If you were lucky enough to be able to attend one of the free screenings (held to celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13th at 300 cinemas across the UK) then please share your movie review below! What did you think of the film? Would you recommend it?

Here's the synopsis: “starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay and based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Watch the trailer here:

~ What did you think?
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?

My 9 year old son and I we watched the film at a preview screening. It was absolutely wonderful! My son, who never cries when watching films, he cried! We also enjoyed the lovely humour it has and the amazing acting from all the actors! Excellent!!!

phillie1 · 17/11/2017 19:48

Looks like one for me and my daughter - my husband would hate it. Will get the book from the libray I think to read also. Hopefully see soon with the Meerkat movies BOGOF

musicalprof · 17/11/2017 20:17

I have read the book, which I really enjoyed, particularly as I am the mother of a disabled daughter who has often drawn looks & stares.

If I'm honest about the trailer, I found the music intrusive & overly positive, continually trying to rise to a crescendo. For me, the trailer didn't seem to reflect the complexity of the book & the relationships in it. Auggie on screen doesn't match the Auggie in my imagination (how could he?) & perhaps because of my own experience, I didn't feel his facial disfigurement would be that shocking.

I think the humour in the book looks like it has translated well on to the screen & I would like to see the film at some point, but as I don't get to go to the cinema anymore, I will probably have to wait for the DVD.

BGcat14 · 17/11/2017 20:44

This film looks wonderful, I felt very moved by the trailer. I love films with a great message Smile and will definitely be seeing it (maybe at home than the cinema, we'll see!)

DurhamDurham · 17/11/2017 20:45

I went to after screening with my husband, our 24 year old daughter and a good friend of mine who had just lost her mum and needed cheering up.

My daughter started crying within five minutes of the film starting, me and my friend joined in shortly afterwards.
It’s a lovely life affirming film, granted you could predict the ending from the beginning so there weren’t many surprises.

The young cast were great, all very natural. The adults were ok too Smile
The only bit we didn’t like was when the dog died, seemed a bit pointless and just another excuse to make us cry.

Overall we loved it, my husband sat at the end of the row in case he decided to make a hasty exit, he stayed for the whole film.

hannahbjm · 17/11/2017 21:54

Tne trailer looks great, looks a really thought provoking film.
No neverread or heard of it actually.
I think looks tear jerking and something that will really involve me.
Yes definitely will

Marg2k8 · 17/11/2017 22:46

I haven't read the book. Whilst the trailer looks ok, I don't think I will go and see the film at the pictures. Something has to really grab me big time before I go to the cinema. It cost so much, so I would sooner wait until it comes out on DVD.

beckyinman · 17/11/2017 22:55

I've not read the book for this but it looks like a proper tearjerker.

I loved Jacob Tremblay in Room so think I would like this.

Carriecakes80 · 17/11/2017 22:58

~ What did you think?~ I think Jacob Tremblay is an amazing young actor and cannot wait to see him in this.
~ Have you read the book (based on the book by R.J. Palacio)~
Yes, although I have heard there are a lot of changes between the book and film (saying that though, when aren't the book and films usually pretty different.)
~ What looks good about the film? ~ I just know me and my daughter will cry! I doubt that it can be that different from the book, and the book left me feeling very moved. The Prosthetics used on the young actor are amazing, looking forward to seeing this.
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it? ~ As soon as it hits the RAF cinema, yes! x

Amaksy · 18/11/2017 04:37

Gosh the trailer was really powerful - now not sure why I missed the movie but will love to go and watch it.

rachelmi · 18/11/2017 08:50

A tear jerker and emotional 😭.

I didn’t know it was a book and I haven’t read it yet.

More suitable for older children and I may go to see it

mclarkie · 18/11/2017 08:53

~ What did you think?
I thought it looked OK
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Not yet
~ What looks good about the film?
Good cast
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Not my kind of movie, but I think this movie should be shown in every school

debjani · 18/11/2017 09:33

I went to see the film with DH & two DDs aged 12 & 14 - we all really liked it. Much less sentimental than I expected (I don't know the book although my eldest said the film divided into similar chapters as the book). It was funny, characters were well-drawn, good acting especially the child actors and I would definitely recommend as a family film. It was surprisingly long about 2 hours) but didn't drag. However, in the light of gender equality, equal pay issues my girls are aware of in the news, they were disappointed that plot strands involving the daughter weren't fully developed, she had hardly any costume changes and in the stickers they got to go with the film, there were 3 of the main character, one each of the parents, two of daisy the dog and none of the sister!

buckley1983 · 18/11/2017 09:51

Saw the trailer for 'Wonder' at the cinema - a really powerful one.
I read the book last year & really enjoyed it. Some really upsetting moments, but it felt very real throughout.
It's great to see this story being brought to screen & raising awareness of facial differences & how they are perceived.
To see this released in connection with World Kindness Day is a really lovely partnership :)
Can't wait to see the film!

ValarMorghulisss · 18/11/2017 12:42

Took my 12 year old ds to watch it.
I haven’t read the book, I went on the strength of a trailer I saw. It was amazing. I cried a few many, times which I was expecting, but at the end my (Star Wars loving) son asked me for a tissue, which just says it all really.

I’ll recommend it to his teacher, I think they should show it in school when it comes out on dvd.

StepAwayFromCake · 18/11/2017 13:22

Dd just overheard me watching the trailer
"Is that the Wonder movie trailer?
Oh my god mum, its such an awesome book! You must read it."
"I've been wondering whether to read the book first, or watch the film first."
"Read the book first! It's in the school library. If I borrow the book for you, will you read it and then can we go and see the movie together?"

She's 15 Grin

(The last line of the trailer caught me like nothing else in it did: "Dude, it takes plastic surgery to look this awesome.")

Annamaria0 · 18/11/2017 17:28

I read the book, it's brilliant. I hope the film won't disappoint (often the case with adaptations), the trailer looks promising, and I'll take my son to see it - he has special needs, so it'll resonate.

JustMarriedAndLovingIt · 18/11/2017 18:14

We saw this trailer the other night and I said to DH that the movie looked great. Looks to be a very strong cast with a strong emphasis on letting the little boy know he can do whatever he wants. I will be going to watch this. Very heart warming feel to it.

becky004 · 18/11/2017 18:27

I can't wait to see the film after reading the book. Have my hankies ready.

footdust · 18/11/2017 18:38

It's a good trailer, looks like a good film.
I've never read the book but now tempted.
The film looks like it will be a bit weepy but with a positive ending.
Will probably go to see it with my daughter - we both love a good cry!!

KingscoteStaff · 18/11/2017 19:02

~ What did you think?
The kid playing August looks considerable less shocking than the description in the book.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Yes, and have read it to my last 3 years of Year 6 children, all of whom have loved it. We also use it to teach a lot of our PHSE syllabus.

~ What looks good about the film?
Good child acting,

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Yes

Cailin7 · 18/11/2017 20:09

The trailer looks good, although not my usual kind of film. Liking the cast.

sjonlegs · 18/11/2017 20:33

The book was fantastic and as soon as I read it I passed it on to both my youngest children to read as I knew it would benefit them. (My eldest son has profound special medical and complex special needs - so this story resounds particularly clearly with my family). My children both read it and loved it - I even went into school to read an except to my daughter's class for Reading Week.

I was asked to review the film so was lucky enough to get to see it. It was absolutely brilliant. The trailer was good and had the right level of temptation - without giving too much away and revealing the best bits.

It was well cast. The leading role was handled superbly, as were the rest of the cast. Julia Roberts never fails to impress me.

Such a bitter//sweet tale and I shed so many tears. I'll DEFINITELY see this again soon as I can.

It's a must see!!

SuzCG · 18/11/2017 20:58

Oh my! Have just watched this trailer and I SO need to go see this film - it looks so sweet. I know 100% it will make me cry, because anything sad around kids always makes me cry. But I also hope it will make me smile because I want a happy ending for this gorgeous little boy. I haven't read the book but will look it up tomorrow and order it.

MyCatIsPlottingToKillMe · 18/11/2017 22:14

~ What did you think?
The film looks sweet, but the kid is massively better looking than described in the book, which kind of misses the point a bit. As a Mum of a kid who's had surgery for craniosynostosis (a cranial deformity) I rather object to that!

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Yes, I read it last year.

~ What looks good about the film?
It looks like it might hopefully be sticking to the book in other areas.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Maybe - my kids have read the book as well (I borrowed it after my eldest read it)
