The team behind the new Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay movie, Wonder, would love to know what Mumsnetters think about the trailer for the film - which opens on 1 December.

PLUS...: If you were lucky enough to be able to attend one of the free screenings (held to celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13th at 300 cinemas across the UK) then please share your movie review below! What did you think of the film? Would you recommend it?

Here's the synopsis: “starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay and based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Watch the trailer here:

~ What did you think?
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
~ What looks good about the film?
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?

Add your review of the trailer (or film if you have seen it) to this thread and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £300 voucher for the store of choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

I liked it so much I booked tickets!

sbruin1122 · 16/11/2017 23:04

i'll see it!

Headfullofdreams · 17/11/2017 00:20

Loved the trailer, can't wait to see the film. My DS is reading the book at school too. Tried to get free tickets but failed.

lindarumsey · 17/11/2017 07:58

Trailer looks good. Will probably read the book first before watching the film. Think I'll need plenty of tissues for both!

Rosied33 · 17/11/2017 08:13

I thought the trailer didn't give too much away but showed enough to know exactly what the movie is about.
I have read the book and thought it was a good read. I didn't know a movie had been made, something to look forward to.
I think any parent will tap into the emotions of Aggie not fitting in and finding his place in the world. It'll tug on the heart strings but given the subject matter hard not to.
Yes, I would like to see it.

lyndseyh78 · 17/11/2017 08:54

~ What did you think?
I thought the trailer looked really good, I think it’ll be a film that will make me laugh and cry in equal measure.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
No I sometimes think it’s better not to!

~ What looks good about the film?
I’d never heard of this film before I think it’ll be a heartwarming movie about a little boys struggles with life and trying to fit in

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?.
My eldest daughter starts secondary school next year and is a little bit different to some of the other children so this struck a chord with me! I’ll take her to watch it with me I think it will make her feel better knowing that it’s ok to be different and hopefully she’ll realise that being different isn’t always a bad thing Smile

RussellB · 17/11/2017 09:10

A real tear jerker and a very relevant and current issue in today's society. Contains first rate actors to give credibility and publicity to the wider public who may not at first be attracted to the story. Not read the book so hopefully it has a feel-good, positive and reassuring ending.

Arrietty123 · 17/11/2017 09:15

I found myself getting pretty emotional when watching the trailer.

I haven't read the book but will be buying it in the future.

I liked the fact that Auggie has such a fantastic sense of humour and I know that I will enjoy the film.

I will definitely be going to see the film :)

nobutreally · 17/11/2017 09:24
  1. Looks cute and 'heartwarming'... if maybe a little sentimental/scmaultzy for my tastes!
  2. No - I've seen it in bookshops and I must say the cover gives a very different impression as to the contents
  3. I'd expect tears and 'messages' about life - and it looks funny and warm
  4. I wouldn't go to the cinema for it - I only go occasionally and reserve that for films that 'need' the scale of cinema. This looks like the sort of film that would work well on TV and I'd certainly watch it on the small screen.
StickChildNumberTwo · 17/11/2017 09:33

~ What did you think?
It looks good, albeit probably weepy

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Nope, never heard of it

~ What looks good about the film?
Looks like it will have a good message about kids being kids no matter what they look like, and the need to see past the superficial stuff.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Realistically probably not (I'm struggling to remember when we last went to the cinema) but if we do manage a trip I'll look out for it

ozgirl74 · 17/11/2017 10:56

~ What did you think? The trailer alone is making me cry. I looks really true to the book and such an important movie to get kids to watch as well as adults.
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)? Yes I have. It's a wonderful story as is the picture book.
~ What looks good about the film? It will be a real eye opener for lots of kids, dealing with bullying at its worst. I love the fact that Owen Wilson has taken on the part of Dad as he normally is just the joker.
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it? Absolutely, I am taking my 9 year old daughter as soon as I can.

clairebybear · 17/11/2017 10:59

I read the book quite a while ago, and managed to get the preview tickets. As with a lot of book to movie attempts, it didn't quite live up to expectation, but was a nice film. Heavy on the treacle, and doesn't delve too deep into the issues surrounding Treacher collins.

rackhampearl · 17/11/2017 11:00

Been meaning to post again. Took my 5 year old DD to watch this. I was dubious as I thought she would get bored but they kept it fun and easy for her to digest whilst getting across the important message about kindness, acceptance and bullying. She really enjoyed it and so do I. She said when we got out that they should show it in her classroom and I think she’s right. Definitely a movie to be shown in primary school to instil that message of being kind into them whilst they’re young. Brilliant film and I’ll be buying it once it’s out.

Pigeonpea · 17/11/2017 12:56

I did go and see this movie - I knew nothing about it before I went, i haven't read the book
From the start I was crying - as a mum, you can relate to this movie on so many levels
I thought the cast was well chosen and the acting was brilliant. It was so every day - the clothes were what real people wear
A truly beautiful movie

thesoupdragon44 · 17/11/2017 13:22

What did you think?
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
I hadn't read the book, and heard that it was based on a book after we had been to the screening
~ What looks good about the film?
The film was a great feel good film with happy and sad bits. Even my 12 year old enjoyed watching it and said it was inspirational
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Thank you for the free film screening it was lovely to have a week day evening film night with popcorn

helsrodders · 17/11/2017 13:42

~ What did you think?
The trailer moved me. I felt pain in my heart seeing the family taking such a giant step and hoping that the child wouldn’t suffer ridicule and bullying from the other children.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
No I have not.

~ What looks good about the film?
Finally the children see that it’s not the outward features of the boy, but the wonderful person within and they are drawn to befriend him. With the support of his family and friends he successfully starts to enjoy his friendships and school environment. I feel that everything will end fine by the end of the film.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
I don’t think so, no. I know this film will make me cry and I am an ugly crier. I will wait until I can see this at home.

Yaracuy · 17/11/2017 13:55

I've had my eyes full of joyful tears. I love JR and she's grown to now be a real young mother on the screen. I have a hunch the film is going to be a success and definitely I won't miss it. Maybe... I'll read the book but not yet.

dannydog1 · 17/11/2017 14:21

I haven’t read the book but will definitely watch it at some point. Looks like uplifting but tissues also needed! Would be thought provoking for older children as well.

Florence4 · 17/11/2017 14:21

I have watched the film. It reminds of the film Mask which starred Cher about a teenager with a massive facial skull deformity. In Wonder the boy has a less severe facial deformity but still it makes him stick out and feel isolated from his peers. He has a loving family who make him feel special and over the course of the film he is accepted by his class peers and even bonds and makes some strong relationships. A film about love, isolation and overcoming obstacles. It certainly pulls at the heart strings and I can definitely recommend. Really want to get hold of the book and read it now!

Breeding4years · 17/11/2017 14:22

What did you think?
Looks great- fab cast

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?

No but my 11y DD has - it’s one of her favourite books.

~ What looks good about the film?

Feel good factor.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see

Already went with DD we both loved it. So moving, we both throughly enjoyed and have recommended to others.

mumofmadboys · 17/11/2017 14:58

I have read the book and I saw the film at one of the free showings on November 13 th. I loved it. It is great when kindness and loving acceptance triumph in the end!

cambridgemumof4 · 17/11/2017 15:40

How topical to see it on World Kindness day! My 3 girls aged 7-14 and I absolutely loved it and even the 7-yr old said how important it is to be nice and kind to people. My 14 yr old and I had previously read the book and absolutely loved it - and the film met our (very high) expectations. Don't know why I was surprised to discover RJ Palaccio is a woman.......she wrote so sensitively I should have guessed! Highly recommended.

AIMOND · 17/11/2017 16:33

The trailer looks great.

I've not read or heard of the book but may investigate now.

The issue the film is tackling looks good.

Probably won't watch at the cinema. Rarely go to the cinema as so pricey, will watch once it is out to stream, rent etc though!

rhinosuze · 17/11/2017 17:46

Ill definitely go, I like the stars and I enjoyed the trailer, seems to have some humour despite the fact it's obviously going to be sad in parts

Bobthatsafunnynameforagirl · 17/11/2017 19:33

I haven't read it and had never heard of it.
The trailer is amazing - great acting, very moving. Powerful. I know I would cry in the cinema.
It seems to be an excellent way of challenging assumptions and prejudice. I am not sure though that I haven't already seen the best of the film by watching the trailer!
Unlikely to go to the cinema simply because of time and expense and lack of emotional resilience!
