The team behind the new Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay movie, Wonder, would love to know what Mumsnetters think about the trailer for the film - which opens on 1 December.

PLUS...: If you were lucky enough to be able to attend one of the free screenings (held to celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13th at 300 cinemas across the UK) then please share your movie review below! What did you think of the film? Would you recommend it?

Here's the synopsis: “starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay and based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Watch the trailer here:

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?

This is a very good trailer. I will definitely watch this together with my kids. Definitely, school bullying should stop and this can be an eye opener. Every mom should watch this with their kids.

quizqueen · 19/11/2017 02:25

Never heard of this story before. I'm afraid my criticism of the film would be that the boy looks normal to me. I honestly couldn't see anything wrong with his looks!! Is it based on a true story.

Masonbee · 19/11/2017 08:05

What did you think?
Really interesting casting choices, I think Owen Wilson is a perfect fit for the character and nice to see Julia Roberts in a non romantic role. Auggie's disfigurement seems more moderate than in the book, I guess due to make up limitations. I did wonder if it might be to make him easier to identify with, which would bother me if the decision was made on that basis. The music was clearly promoting the uplifting aspect of the story

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Yes, see above. For what it's worth, I enjoyed it up to a point but found it a bit sentimental. I may have been influenced by a blog I was reading by a disabled activist who takes issue with "uplifting" stories of disability being so dominant that the day to day difficulties of facing discrimination get subsumed under a desire to use disabled people as something for non disabled people to be inspired by. The book is well meaning and interesting in places but falls into that category for me. The trailer seems to be promoting that heartwarming overcoming difficulty aspect over other parts of the book where Auggie find things difficult. It's an important story to be told, but I hope it also deals with the bullying he faces in a meaningful way, not just superficially.

~ What looks good about the film?
The casting choices, as above. I'm interested to see how they have changed the book and the interpretation of certain scenes.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Yes, definitely. I'm interested in representations of disability and difference in the media and I want to see how the issues above are handled.

One of my favourite books ever and I think the trailer looks as if the film does it justice. Great casting. In the book, it says that Augie's Mum and Dad are good looking, but they need to look kind and intelligent too. I can't wait to see this film and to take my children.

maclinks · 19/11/2017 15:00

Mozarmstrong · 19/11/2017 20:11

Thank you for preview tickets. I hadn't read the book so seeing the film was a first of emotions for me. It's soon inspiring from all angles of life love and understanding. None of us are the same and this looks into this aspect. I cried at very sad parts and laughed when I understood the happy look through their eyes with this outstanding boy and his devoted family.

MillyVanilli222 · 19/11/2017 20:41

I haven't read the book, but friends have and are excited about the film. After watching the trailer, I am too!

grannybiker · 19/11/2017 20:54

The trailer makes me want to see the film - maybe with some tissues in my pocket!
I haven't seen the book, so will keep an eye out.

dilydaly · 19/11/2017 21:00

Loved the trailer, think I'll go and get the book. Such a lovely story, and a great message to send to people. Having a disabled child myself (not that I'm implying in any way that this child is disabled!) any mainstream programme or movie that promotes understanding of those that are different, for whatever reason, is brilliant in my opinion. Will be 100% going to see this when it comes out !

Teaandadunk · 19/11/2017 21:31

Can’t wait to see it!
Love love love the book and was worried the film wouldn’t do it justice but the trailer looks like it might just manage.
Yay 😁

purplevamp · 19/11/2017 23:14

I saw the trailer for this and thought it would be a good weepy movie. I managed to get some free tickets for this and although I enjoyed it, it wasn't as nearly as sad as I thought it would be. I certainly didn't need tissues! I hadn't read the book so didn't really know what to expect. I thought Julia Roberts played the part of the Mum really well. Owen Wilson was good but he just seemed to play himself. I would recommend this film to anyone who likes feel-good movies with no sex, violence or swearing! Grin

magentastardust · 19/11/2017 23:26

The trailer looks great, definitely makes me want to go and see the film.

I haven't read the book but have ordered it for dd10 so would like to read it and go and see the film together.

It looks like it may be an emotional film but also uplifting , right up my street!

Leanfun · 20/11/2017 08:44

What did you think? Watched the trailer and definitely want to see the film. I had not heard about the book so not read it but will after watching the trailer.

Abominus · 20/11/2017 12:37

Looks interesting, both sad yet heartwarming and uplifting at the same time. Not my usual fare by any means, but it's on my radar now.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
I have not.

~ What looks good about the film?
Looks an inspiring movie with good messages about kindness and friendship. Seems well acted with a good cast.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Probably will once it hits Amazon or Netflix.

Clawdy · 20/11/2017 12:53

The trailer looks interesting, but I did think Auggie's face was not as described in the book, it is more severely deformed in the novel.
Yes, we read "Wonder" for our book group, and most of us enjoyed it, though one or two found it slightly sentimental.
The acting in the film looks very good. Like the casting of Julia and Owen.
I will go and see it, Intrigued to see how they deal with a very difficult subject.

glmcall123 · 20/11/2017 13:57

My daughter read the book and was very inspired by it. The film looks very moving, I know my daughter will want to see it. Jacob Tremblay was amazing in Room and is a great choice.

ha2el · 20/11/2017 14:30

I've only seen the trailer.I'm not sure that I want to take the journey for this story.

jcalel80 · 20/11/2017 14:53

The trailer looks really good, I read the book a few years ago and liked it at the time although Ive forgotten a lot of the story. I will definitely be going to see it.

CormoranStrike · 20/11/2017 16:36

I think it looks heartwarming and can’t wait to see it; my children has facial differences, so I suspect I may be a bit emotional watching it.

Davenotdave · 20/11/2017 17:17
