The team behind the new Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay movie, Wonder, would love to know what Mumsnetters think about the trailer for the film - which opens on 1 December.

PLUS...: If you were lucky enough to be able to attend one of the free screenings (held to celebrate World Kindness Day on November 13th at 300 cinemas across the UK) then please share your movie review below! What did you think of the film? Would you recommend it?

Here's the synopsis: “starring Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson and Jacob Tremblay and based on the New York Times bestseller, WONDER tells the story of August Pullman. Born with facial differences that, up until now, have prevented him from going to a mainstream school, Auggie becomes the most unlikely of heroes when he enters the local fifth grade. As his family, his new classmates, and the larger community all struggle to find their compassion and acceptance, Auggie's extraordinary journey will unite them all and prove you can't blend in when you were born to stand out.”

Watch the trailer here:

~ What did you think?
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
~ What looks good about the film?
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?

Add your review of the trailer (or film if you have seen it) to this thread and you will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will get a £300 voucher for the store of choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck

I’m so glad the free screening event is being promoted, I have tickets and having been feeling everyone I know about it too.

I think the trailer does a pretty good job of representing what the film will be like - it looks both upbeat/inspirational, funny and emotional, which is what I’m expecting the film to be.

I’ve read the book many times because I read it when it first came out, have taught it to several Year 8 classes (Yr 7 in England) and read it to my own kids. I get choked up in the same places every time I read it!

I think the book, and also the film explore really important themes about fitting in, friendship and identity. I particularly like the emphasis on kindness and I’m pleased that the trailer makes it seem like the film has stayed faithful to all the things I love about the book.

I am going to see it on Monday, bringing my whole family and I know lots of friends will be going too.

Popcornandbuttons · 11/11/2017 21:25

I think the trailer made the film seem quite magical as well as an emotional rollercoaster. It made me want to watch the movie.

I haven't read the book.

I think the acting looks strong, particularly from the little boy.

I probably won't see it at the cinema as I don't have a willing babysitter for evenings, so will hope to catch it on tv/ rental.

PotteryLottery · 11/11/2017 22:38

~ What did you think?
Good for people who haven't read the book I've read the book which doesn't disclose the exact deformity so I had my own ideas of the disfigurement, which I imagined to be worse.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Yes, loved it.

~ What looks good about the film?
The reactions of his peers.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Definitely, I am also recommending my school goes on a rewards trip to see it.

pongopig · 12/11/2017 13:07

~ What did you think?

We saw the trailer at the cinema yesterday. I thought it was moving and both my DC turned to me and said they wanted to see it.
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
My eldest DC has
~ What looks good about the film?
Good storyline, great acting
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Yes I think so

RamsayBoltonsConscience · 12/11/2017 18:02

The trailer looks wonderful (see what I did there?) 😁
I love the book and have read it to my class for the last two years
The way that the film appears to follow the plot (although I can see that there are some differences) looks good and I love Owen Wilson in this type of film.
I will definitely go and see it!

Scruffette · 12/11/2017 18:53

I liked the trailer, I thought it made the film seem true to the book.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?

Yes, I read the book to my 8 year old when I saw it was being made into a film. My 14 year old read the book (on recommendation from her grandma) many years ago and we all loved it. I cried reading it. I thought it taught a great lesson to children and adults.

~ What looks good about the film?

It looks true to the book, Auggie's appearance is as expected and Summer and Jack are also as expected.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?

Definitely. We are going to go with the whole (extended) family (and a box of Kleenex man sized). We can't wait.

Labtest7 · 12/11/2017 19:51

The trailer looks really good. I have read the book, and the follow up 'Auggie and Me' and cried at the end! Will definitely be going to see the film with my ten year old.

AWholeLottaRosie · 12/11/2017 20:02

The trailer looks good, gives an insight into the gist of the film without giving away the whole plot (I hate it when trailers are so detailed that you feel like there’ll be no surprises left)

I haven’t read the book

The film looks weepy and heart-warming without being too sickly. I watched a film called Mask about thirty years ago, the story was about a teenager with a facial deformity. This film trailer reminded me a bit of that film and how much I enjoyed it at the time, me and my friends sobbed buckets.

Yes I think I will watch this film.

mamaduckbone · 13/11/2017 06:42

My son and I absolutely love the book which usually means being disappointed with the film, but the trailer looks really promising.
The film looks well cast and I’ve already warmed to the young actor playing Auggie.
Yes, I think I will go and see it with my son - hoping for more free tickets to be released for our local cinema.

daniel1996 · 13/11/2017 09:02

What did you think?

Anything that Julia Roberts is in would be great, it sounds like a fabulous film, what a strong boy he must be, I think all will turn out well in the end, plus children and their parents are more accepting and open minded as they were a decade ago,

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?

No, but I will be on the look out for everything from this author.

~ What looks good about the film?

To teach us all that we should not accept people on face value, do not have prejudice and think about other peoples feelings.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
I've applied and waiting to hear !

CMOTDibbler · 13/11/2017 09:54

I haven't read the book, but the trailer looks great, and I will go and see the film

Sammyislost · 13/11/2017 10:44

Too late for tickets, but It looks very sweet. A feel-good film about being KIND!! I think it's especially good timing with the large 'Be Kind' campaign in Britain at the moment. I don't think I would see it at the cinema, but I would borrow it on DVD when it comes out.

I haven't read the book.

FlowerPot1234 · 13/11/2017 11:27

What did you think?
Sad story of course, but like zillions of others which aren't made into movies, but this trying to appear as a major world catastrophe that deserves a Hollywood film.

Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
No.

What looks good about the film?
Acting.

Do you think you’ll go and see it?
No.

SukiPutTheEarlGreyOn · 13/11/2017 11:36

I have to admit to a lip wobble moment while viewing the trailer. Goodness knows what I'll be like watching the entire film. This was the last book that I read to my dds (they were in Y7&8) and it holds special memories because it moved us all so much and was so life affirming. The trailer really does look like the film will do justice to the book - bringing out the laughter as well as the pathos. I'm looking forward to going to see it with my dds...and, yes, I'll be packing tissues.

Hmumto3 · 13/11/2017 11:38

~ What did you think? The trailer looks good a very moving story.

~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)? No but I probably will now.

~ What looks good about the film? A good cast , well known actors that are addressing and tackling difficult but actual situations children go through. Looks like it will reflect real life issues.

~ Do you think you’ll go and see it? I will probably wait for it to come out on Netflix or tv.

DLMK123 · 13/11/2017 14:29

tonidavis1983 · 13/11/2017 14:56

I've been a fan of this book for a long time. I was so glad when they announced they where making it a film and the casting is phenomenal. However I'm worried that auggie voice is going to be lost because the book is very much his mind and in his own head where as film it a much more physical representation. I'm looking forward to the film though

Belo · 13/11/2017 17:01

Hi Mumsnet, we received 4 tickets for a 6.30pm showing tonight in Peckham but my daughters are both struggling to get homework finished. I don't think we'll be able to make it. Do we need to let the organisers know?

TheKnackeredChef · 13/11/2017 18:19

I'm in Burton Cineworld waiting for the film to start. I have a strong feeling that there are lots of MNers in the audience and am seriously considering standing up and asking you all to wave to me, except I'm quite sure DD would never speak to me again. AIBU?

DuskPanda · 13/11/2017 18:46

~ What did you think?
That am going to have to take lots of tissues to the cinema. Brilliant but does give a lot of the story away for a trailer.
~ Have you read the book (it’s based on the book by R.J. Palacio)?
Yes
~ What looks good about the film?
Everything
~ Do you think you’ll go and see it?
Definitely

Theimpossiblegirl · 13/11/2017 20:05

We have just got back from our local preview screening of Wonder. It was such a good film, we loved it!
It was moving and emotional but not a full on weepy, and not schmaltzy at all. It was really well done, with an incredible cast (and my fave crush Owen Wilson).
DD (15) said that it should be compulsory viewing as part of secondary transition, which I thought was a good idea. All of the kids with us (ranging from 8-16) really rated it and said thank you for the opportunity to see it before their friends.

Ledkr · 13/11/2017 20:29

Just got back with my 6 and 15 year old. We all adored the film and cried a lot.
My 15 year old dd was bullied dreadfully this year so it meant a lot to to us.

Quietvoiceplease · 13/11/2017 21:24

Saw the movie this evening (for which huge thanks) and we all enjoyed it (saw with my 3 DDs). It is great: very emotional, and an excellent story. Really feel good, and finishes in a happy way - which the book does, but somehow the book makes clear that there are unanswered Qs about the future.
It is a hard gig - the book is amazing, and by not actually describing the main protagonist's features you are left to imagine his image (which is not how the film shows it, of course).
It is a really important story, it is a great film, and the issues raised are really important for all of us to reminded of. Standing up to things that are wrong (even when it makes us unpopular), and always being kind - how many of us always live up to that?
Thanks again.

aristocat · 13/11/2017 21:42

We’ve just returned from wAtching this wonderful film Smile
DS had read the book a few years ago and we were all impressed with the story and characters.

I cried too much but can cry st anything LOL
DD was upset about the dogHmm

We all loved this film and thank you for the opportunity to watch it early.

bestwayforward · 13/11/2017 21:50

Been to see the film tonight, thanks for the free tickets, loved the film. A warm fuzzy film. I will be recommending it to everyone.
