Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

I would love to be able to stream TV when we are away from home

carolacr · 09/09/2017 15:29

I said to my husband yesterday how quick technology updates and we need to get with it. Technology is too quick for me

PoppyPopcorn · 09/09/2017 15:32

Homework! Schools seem to be moving to a more project-based way of doing homework so with three kids there's always someone needing to research Viking food or Egyptian fashion or life in the trenches during WW1.

SoupDragon · 09/09/2017 15:34

I would be able to pack my precious firstborn child off to university safe in the knowledge he would be able to produce all his assignments legibly and on time. Or at least legibly.

daydreambeliever21 · 09/09/2017 15:36

It would be used for everything in our house as we both work from home and the kids are all at an age (16, 15, 13) where they use computers for schoolwork and social media for leisure time as well as youtube, catch up tv, online games, DVDs, you name it.

give it to my girlfriend so I can use our pc instead of her hogging it all the time playing candy crush :-(

hmariez · 09/09/2017 15:41

My eldest daughter is approaching an age where she will need a laptop to do her homework on

Funkyferret · 09/09/2017 15:42

I would love a laptop that was solely for my work and household accounts. No "borrowing" allowed. We're sensible but I always worry about something happening and me losing the lot plus the laptop is always a bit messy because no one files things as well as me!

doleritedinosaur · 09/09/2017 15:47

The new laptop would be used for me to study to get used to studying for my masters next year.
OH can use it to get used to technology & for getting ready to apply to new jobs.

Also can use it for downtime.

My chromebook (the only computery thing we have in the house) is on it's last legs. As I now have children at school a laptop would be so useful (almost necessary!) for homework as well as keeping up with school admin - everything is online now!

We're also trying to declutter and sell old stuff to fund maintaining/decorating our house - would be great to have a laptop to do this on.

Also skyping far away grandparents. And of course...mumsnetting!

flutterbean · 09/09/2017 15:58

A laptop with a lot of storage space and possibly photo editing software. My dd has started showing an interest in photography and it would be lovely to be able to encourage her in this!

AnimalAddict · 09/09/2017 16:23

A new laptop would be wonderful, the one we have now is on its last legs!

sandy31 · 09/09/2017 16:31

My Hubby loves collating all his photos from past Holidays, but is finding it difficult to do on his tablet. This would help him get the machine that he needs to get a slide show up and running.

Teddygirlonce · 09/09/2017 16:33

Having recently created a designated study zone downstairs in our hallway for our DC, a laptop that takes up little space but does the 'techy business' would be extremely welcome.

laur5en · 09/09/2017 16:33

My daughter has just gone into year 11 so she could use a new laptop to do revision and homework ready for May!

fld14 · 09/09/2017 16:46

The laptop we have is so slow and the lid is breaking off lol. A new laptop would allow us to surf quickly :0)

somewhereitiswinetime · 09/09/2017 17:06

Only have my work laptop - which although is new and super wizzy the battery life is shocking. Even worse than my iPhone Hmmseems like these days that's the price we have to pay for great kit...

LeeR1985 · 09/09/2017 17:08

I do a lot of video editing and my daughter loves playing games like minecraft so I'd love a mid range laptop that would be able to handle both

purplepandas · 09/09/2017 17:11

Be able to work effectively when wfh. Mine is ancient, heavy and slow. Sounds like me!

juju3 · 09/09/2017 17:15

I have problems with radiation from older computer screens and am hoping a new computer would fix this

dadshere · 09/09/2017 17:16

I would love a laptop to show movies and music videos to my dd, she always wants to use my computer!

BellaVida · 09/09/2017 17:18

A laptop would be an amazing help to us. I have 4 DC one primary age and 3 secondary age. The homework load has shot up and they fight to get on the (aging) desktop which is upstairs. To top it off, the desktop periodically 'dies' or shuts down programmes- my youngest literally just had to redo her homework from scratch! Angry A fast, reliable laptop with a good amount of storage and the latest Microsoft office would be a huge help.

JordanMcDeere · 09/09/2017 17:18

A new laptop would mean I'd actually be able to work from home & change our financial situation. We can't afford childcare when we'd need it

CheeseAtFourpence · 09/09/2017 17:20

We have just had this conversation today. Our 6 year old has a flair for computers. She struggles with school but if it's on the computer she's interested. However our computer is used for my DH's business so he gets a bit nervous with her playing on it. She's asking Father Christmas for her own. Smile

spottypjs · 09/09/2017 17:29

Ours is quite old so if you want to run any movies it has to be plugged in else it dies halfway through!
