Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

My laptop was given to me 7years ago by my daughter and she had it for 3 years, yes it's slow but it allows me to keep in touch with the world when I'm laid up in bed.I would love a brand new one but unless I'm either lucky enough to win one or I have a cash windfall I shall persevere with what I have

koalab · 09/09/2017 20:24

We don't have any DC in school yet so the only time we use the laptop at the moment is if we need to write something in word or occasionally update our expenses spreadsheet Grin

TheJunctionBaby · 09/09/2017 20:24

Our son has just started year 10. A laptop would be great for him for his studying, but also, as a keen gamer and artist, he could spend hours programming or drawing without hogging the family laptop!

freefan · 09/09/2017 20:24

We always look for a large storage capacity and it being lightweight

noenergy · 09/09/2017 20:33

It would be a great help for my DD to do her homework research on. She is currently doing a club called mini versity which is computer based but I don't have a computer at home for her to practice anything she has learnt.

She is also going to learn a new language with a native teacher online via Skype so it would be a great help.

My (ancient) laptop us nearly 5 years old now and is so slow I struggle Ho do anything with it. Would love a laptop that could keep up!

cocochips · 09/09/2017 21:10

We would edit all the videos we make of our wonderful adventures

TellMeItsNotTrue · 09/09/2017 21:16

We are in need of one at the moment but it's finding the time to search, check reviews, compare, price check etc.

Battery life is important and our current laptop is mostly used for homework, creating letters/documents etc, storing and editing photographs, and a bit of Internet usage other than homework but that mostly happens on tablets

TheOnlyPurpleLlama · 09/09/2017 21:18

DH is into photo/video editing, so would be perfect for him to use (without nicking mine, which I use for work!)

gin33333 · 09/09/2017 21:22

littleme96 · 09/09/2017 21:32

I would like decent store for the amount of photos that I like to take.

My children would like a decent package of software installed so that they can easily do their homework, without having to register for free versions which do not offer all the features of a full version.

cherylann2461 · 09/09/2017 21:34

my laptop is so old that the letters have rubbed off the keyboard!

pfcpompeysarah · 09/09/2017 21:39

My son is soon to go to secondary school so a laptop would be a fantastic help for him with researching projects and completing homework tasks. He also loves playing games on his Xbox but says some games work better on Windows so he would love to be able to use a laptop to play on a different platform.

twinklenic · 09/09/2017 21:59

our family laptop is used by 4 of our family . I use it mainly for emails, social media and shopping, hubby takes photos as a hobby so uses it for editing them, my two teenagers age 17 and 18 do a lot of college work so have work and things on it. Our youngest sometimes will look on kid friendly websites but not very often at all

gd2011 · 09/09/2017 22:10

It would be great for job hunting.

buzzbeebee · 09/09/2017 23:32

My laptop is now 8 years old from when I started my masters. It is on its last legs. With a new laptop I would have somewhere safe to keep all my photos of my little girl. However more importantly it would enable my husband to complete his exams for work. Currently working on my laptop by the time it has loaded and got going it's nearly time up that he has allocated for studying.

I would also love to get experimenting with new technology for photos and videos. It would also give me more options to watch my TV shows on Netflix and amazon prime in different rooms.

Stephgr8 · 09/09/2017 23:47

I would love a laptop for my children to use for their homework. It would also be great for me to use for entertainment after they have gone to bed!

Jesswoods1992 · 09/09/2017 23:54

Well my partner likes playing games and virtual DJing and mixing music. So that's what he would use it for!
I would use it for browsing the internet keeping upto date on social media and watching diy/vlogs to help me with ideas I would also use it to help create letters and emails! That's my purposes on a laptop
My oldest daughter would use it to play games such as Minecraft and roblox
She is also fascinated by factual information such as the history of the houses of parliament etc so would be perfect for her to expand her knowledge! She would also use it to do her homework or create her project on it for school! So that's the oldest 8 years old!
My middle daughter would use it to also play games and help with such things like homework or research to complete her taak for school! She would also use it to watch other kids open surprise eggs for hours on end She is 6 years old!
My youngest would use it to help him learn he could Access sites such as cbeebies or milkshake to access his favourite show and some great games too! He would also love to use it to sit and watch a movie on too! He is five has autism and dyspraxia
As a whole family it would be a great way for us all to have access to a device that meets all of our needs and specific interests! But mainly for me to help gain access on information, resources and services that will help my son who has autism it would be the perfect thing to communicate with others in a similar situation to me! This would be perfect for us all

Bsummers · 10/09/2017 01:13

I could use a new laptop to do graphic design, I need a new laptop with a big enough hard drive to house all my software!

The family would use the laptop for all sorts, we'd get a laptop with enough ram to keep up with all the software we'll use, we'll use it for TV, listening to music, word processing.

Bez33 · 10/09/2017 01:30

Something that works! Our current laptop is so frustrating, takes forever to load up. My little one loves to play computer games as a treat, but it ends up being a chore as we have to wait, wait and wait some more for everything to load. Long battery life for watching films would be amazing, too!

Justchillaxing · 10/09/2017 01:35

Dds laptop stopped working a month ago, she's starting A levels on Monday and will need a laptop soon as currently we just use our phones for internet access. Buying a new one is out of the question financially.

frenchfancy89 · 10/09/2017 02:26

Our family would love to have a new laptop! My kids are being sent home technology tasks every week for homework now, they also love to use educational sites to play games on which i definitely encourage, learning and fun at the same time!
Usually they get a lot shorter time on the one we've currently got because it keeps crashing and dying on us, I can't even use it for work in case I lose it all, so we have to go to the library which is pretty inconvenient trying to keep a track of kids while trying to get work done Sad

WarmHugs · 10/09/2017 05:53

We all switched over to iPads a few years ago, and I didn't think I'd miss my laptop. But then I started back at college this week, and realised I'd need one. Dug out my old faithful, only to discover Word and Excel were the 2003 versions. Only a couple of years old, I thought. Yeah, 14 years old!

A new laptop would mean doing my homework at home, not at the library, and the DC also being able to use it because a lot of their Mathletics can only be accessed via laptop too.

As my laptop is old, it is super slow and doesn't do all of the tricks that a new one could do. A new one would make using it so much easier and we could do more together as a family with it.
