Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Both my sons would say GAMING! Ours is just nowhere near powerful enough unfortunately. DS1 is now starting to get mostly online homework, so that would be a main use of the laptop too.

eandoauntie · 22/09/2017 14:46

My niece and nephew are getting so clever now and quite often ask me about different topics - quite often about history which I know nothing about so it would be good to have a laptop that's set up for them and me to help us all learn together.

Isn't it amazing how technology is advancing? I tell my daughter that a smart phone is a wondrous thing but she sees it as just an everyday thing, you should have heard the disdain in her voice when she asked "didn't they teach you that (powerpoint presentation) at school?" anyway she now keeps needing to use my laptop to do her schoolwork so she can still snapwhatsappfacetimegram her friends on her phone or whatever trickery it is she's up to, and laughs at how prehistoric it is when she gives it back

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 22/09/2017 16:31

We had a laptop, but it died. I say had, but we still have it - it's under my bed, gathering dust. The only thing I want a laptop for is for storing photos. I'm hoping that at some point in the future I'll be able to find someone who can rescue my photos from the dead laptop. I have a smartphone, so I can check email and browse the internet on that.

DuskPanda · 22/09/2017 17:14

A new laptop would mean I get more custody of mine and the kids would use it for homework and watching films. Longer battery life would be great for the latter and would mean they don't have to be restricted to be near a power source.

My daughter is going back to uni on Sunday for her final year. We bought her a laptop in July 2013 ready for her to start uni. In the end, she decided to defer by a year and then spent last year in Spain doing a placement year. Unfortunately, her laptop hasn't travelled as well as it might have and now has to be plugged in to work at all and is rather hit and miss. As she has to do a dissertation this year, I would love to give her a new laptop so that reliably complete her dissertation.

pinkspideruk · 22/09/2017 18:36

well I start OU soon so it would be perfect for that :) and for planning trips and watching netflix

katiewalters · 22/09/2017 18:47

we have an ipad and a smartphone in the household but not a laptop so would be grest to get one. You cant do everything on an ipad and the children tend to have the ipad so i use my phone. I cant watch everything on my phone due to the flash player. I can do my work on it as i currently go to the library to use their computer

helcrai · 22/09/2017 19:35

My daughter has just started year 7 at secondary school- cue loads of homework and an online system that needs updating when the homework is done. I have now lost my trusty old laptop and am relegated to the steam powered desktop PC which is almost as old as me! Would be great to have a new laptop so I can get back to Mumsnet while I lounge in bed.

molly57 · 22/09/2017 19:45

My current old laptop currently runs on mains power only so is not portable. A new battery costs over half the price of a new laptop so no point buying a new battery.

Dessallara · 22/09/2017 20:54

Educational games and school work :)

JBH316 · 22/09/2017 21:16

I find that if my laptop has been on for a while, it runs sooo slowly. I don't want to wait over 2 minutes for emails to open or pages to load. Watching any kind of video then becomes impossible. I want something fast that stays fast!

HannahLI · 22/09/2017 21:25

Its all about the battery... please someone make it last more than 10 minutes! It worse if the kids are home, or my husband uses it and then abandons it without putting it back on charge. Its my big bug bare, I would love a laptop that actually does what its supposed to and can be used in a variety of places, not attached to the wall.

clauski · 22/09/2017 22:13

Basic usage like homework research for the kids, with general surfing and comping for me. But more importantly it would keep all our photos and videos as a family, and would be a starting point for using new technology to its most effective, especially with the kids.

lolamia91 · 22/09/2017 22:22

have time together whilst plugging it into the TV and helping the family business

BionicMercenary · 22/09/2017 22:27

I would be able to do so much! I really want to improve my crafting and i could hook up so many things to help me :)

GeorgeW78 · 23/09/2017 00:20

We'd be more mobile! Our current laptop is old and has to be permanently plugged in so it's always in the same place and may as well be a desktop! Having a new laptop would be safer too as I'd be able to always have eyes on the screen whether I was in the kitchen or sitting room. It would be fantastic to have a faster machine too as it's noticeably slower than work even just checking email, let alone streaming content.

themammafairy · 23/09/2017 08:34

this is easy - end all the arguments over the antiques one we have!!!

wobblywindows · 23/09/2017 13:22

Our laptop too has to be plugged in and is very heavy. The household pc is good, but needs upgrading to Windows 7 at least. We'd use a new laptop for video calls, and to learn the newer operating system.

cathwarbur · 23/09/2017 20:03

I have an old PC which is so slow now, I have just started a blog which would be easier to do with something more up to date, At the moment it takes ages to load anything.

MrsFig · 24/09/2017 22:00

I would use a new PC to back up the family photos and music library!

ataraxia · 24/09/2017 22:55

Something lightweight with long battery light would be perfect for photo editing!

ItsTimeForDuggee · 24/09/2017 23:11

A new laptop I would use to take to college for my work. my son would use it for playing games as his pc is far to slow and has a growing list of games he is unable to play now

NerrSnerr · 25/09/2017 11:20

For us it would be good to have a reliable laptop to do life admin on. Ours is knackered and will die soon I think.
