Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

DD is a story writer, and she currently has to fight with her younger brother to get access to the iPad, I'd love for her to be able to sit down with a proper keyboard and just let her creative juices flow.

barbsbarbs · 09/09/2017 12:48

we always look for speed, how much data a laptop can hold and the resolution of the picture. It also has to be child friendly and with certain software, such as art and microsoft office, latest version.

My children and I had to flee the marital home back in January, (cannot discuss the reasons.) I left everything behind. I left with my handbag.

Due to the trauma of everything that has happened, including being homeless for five months and the reasons for fleeing, one of my children is unable to cope at school, as she has developed Post Traumatic symptoms, therefore I am trying to home school her. This is proving difficult due to lack of a computer for her. We are using the library for our information. This laptop I am writing this post on is a second hand one I had to pull money together for as I am a teacher teaching online. So a new laptop would be used for my daughter (14) to study on.

A computer does so many things for us, from games to documents, from emails to browsing. A computer would have to be a good all-rounder.

Roseformeplease · 09/09/2017 13:02

We would put it to very good use. DS is off to University but has a year at home saving money so he would use it for contact with the University, planning his year off (hoping to learn Spanish) so he can make e most of it. All his shifts are timetables online so he is currently hunched over a phone screen so it would make a huge difference.

DD would use it for schoolwork and, particularly, to look at and learn tunes online.

I work as a teacher and it would be a godsend as the much promised laptops for teachers at school are now delayed a year, or even cancelled. So much of my workload is now online (Google Classroom) but yet I have to do it all at home on my own, Ancient, iPad. I also mark exam papers each year and have to borrow DH's 6 year old laptop.

DH has 2 jobs. 1 needs no computer but his 2nd job (self-employed) requires a computer and his current one is coming to the end of its life. It is so, so slow.

So, we would all use it. We might also let Granny have a go. She is very anti-tech (won't even use a cashpoint) but often stays and has a list of TV programmes she wants to watch but which DH can't stand. This would mean either he, or his Mum, would have somewhere to watch an alternative programme.

It would be very, very well used.

This would be perfect for me - my husband uses our computer to download his music because he's a DJ so he doesn't like me or the kids using it as it needs to be fast. This would be perfect for me and would enable me to do online reading/activities with the kids.

Expemsiveuniform · 09/09/2017 13:19

DD could use it for art stuff for her gcse and then on to a levels and I could use it to study for a qualification that would take me off benefits and out of the poverty trap.

HELENSCRESCENT · 09/09/2017 13:20

If we had a new laptop I'd use it to learn how to edit photos and get some photo editing programmes as it's something I've always wanted to be able to do.

My laptop was stolen in a burglary and the insurance company couldn't supply the same brand, the one that they replaced it with is terrible. It's supposed to have a touch screen, but if you try to use this feature the whole laptop freezes. The lap top is used for everything in the house hold and with a budding a vlogger in the family we are hoping to save up for a replacement.

Rosehips · 09/09/2017 13:47

I'd love something with a good screen for photo editing etc

ThemisA · 09/09/2017 13:48

An extra laptop would reduce arguments. The children use them for home work, research, games. I use them for research, e-mails, work, catch up, photos and a modicum of shopping!

janeyf1 · 09/09/2017 13:56

A think & light laptop would be ideal because we travel a lot and our normal laptop is heavy to carry and inconvenient. We need to take it with us for homework, games, internet surfing and streaming programmes

imnottoofussed · 09/09/2017 14:00

Dd us just started college and would be able to whizz through her homework on a new laptop Grin we would also be able to put all our digital photos in one place instead of on various mobiles and even some on disc.

itsali · 09/09/2017 14:01

It would be used for email, work, artistic work, browsing, shopping, chatting and everything else in between.

mooota1514 · 09/09/2017 14:06

We like to look at pictures from our family days out on the laptop, and our old one is many years old and starting to fail! I'd love something a bit more lightweight with a more storage

Ganne1 · 09/09/2017 14:07

My husband uses the PC all day long for business and pleasure. The real problem is when "certain" people come to stay en masse, when it's a real drain on the Broadband.

emiliejw · 09/09/2017 14:07

I would use a new laptop for work purposes (I am a Legal Secretary and often work from home) as well as for editing and storing photographs, playing games and surfing the internet.

thesockgap · 09/09/2017 14:09

My teenage sons love gaming and are always hogging the family PC to play games - with a new laptop they could play to their hearts' contents and we would still be able to do what we needed on the PC!

SweetCharityBeginsAtHome · 09/09/2017 14:15

I volunteer as a Company Secretary for a small local charity so I use the family laptop for running all the admin, writing minutes, updating the webpages, sending Companies House and Charities Commission returns etc etc.

DS's school has moved to an increasingly Google Drive/Google Classroom based set-up so all his homework is now Internet based and he needs the laptop a lot for that (not to mention hours of Roblox).

maryandbuzz1 · 09/09/2017 14:15

We use our laptop for a big variety of tasks and entertainment from researching homework, finding jobs and applying, storing and editing holiday photographs to watching films and downloading music. I do a lot of my work on it ..producing detailed planning and worksheets...it's invaluable!

beckyinman · 09/09/2017 14:18

Something lightweight, speedy and versatile so the whole family can us it

MrsPworkingmummy · 09/09/2017 14:21

I would use it in the hope of becoming more organised (spreadsheets of family finances etc). As well as this, I'd like to write children's stories and having a laptop would be a useful tool for getting my ideas down. Finally, I would be able to use the internet in peace without hogging my husband's IPad.

lizd31 · 09/09/2017 14:26

My great niece has just started school & my nephew's laptop is broken so he could really do with a new one to help with her schoolwork

shellywkd · 09/09/2017 14:27

Would love a new computer. My daughter is really into filming and editing as she would love to write and produce her own film. Her laptop is quite slow so I would give it to her and she could pay me back when she makes her first bestselling film.
