Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

My eldest DD is going to university this month and she tells me she needs a new laptop for the teaching course she is doing what with having 5 kids money is somewhat tight as the old laptop has just given up the ghost my other children can't use that either for there homework so a new laptop would be fantastic right now my oldest son would love one just to make videos on as he says he is going to be a famous director and make movies so he tells me haha I really do hope so he has the talent.

We're a very creative family! My husband is a musician and uses his Macbook to create music and to record input from his guitar. His Macbook is really old though and not really fit for purpose anymore so a new laptop would mean that he can carry on doing what he loves at a speed that can keep up with him.

I'm a photographer and digital artist and do alot of intense editing work on my laptop, but it's getting on a bit and it's quite slow to do what I want it to do so a new laptop would mean that I could carry on doing what I love without getting frustrated at the slow speed it's doing it at!

I'm happy with my current laptop. Best thing is being able to connect it to the tv with an HDMI cable so we can watch any streaming service on the TV without worrying about which box/stick/app we have.

My 14 year old grand daughter has a five year plan! It involves a lot of studying to get herself to university, so she can get a good job and have the life she would like. Her mother lives in the moment and sees no value at all in studying, so she still has a clockwork laptop.

My son is doing his GCSEs and he has a laptop which is a old hand me down and runs mega slow, would love to get him a new one

glennamy · 09/09/2017 11:35

ED is starting uni so a laptop would be amazing... No more arguments over access to the PC and her wanting to play her dreadful music! :)

Ds(13) is in S2 and homework is getting tougher and is regularly PC based. If he is out of the house after school a laptop will let him do his homework or revision at his grans or friends house and free up precious time to get out and be active. There is a digital media subject at his school which interests him and a laptop would also allow him to experiment in this area at home with photography and animation, something he can't do on our current very slow 8 year old desktop.

warjonson · 09/09/2017 11:37

I would load it up with educational games to hopefully give my son a leg up in school

ErinSophia · 09/09/2017 11:40

I'm a college student so a new laptop would be useful for all my assessments and it would be great for my children to have a laptop to face time our family who live in Holland and Spain x

I'm not of a techy mind but the little people in my house are able to TO PAINT ! Don't ask how they get a special app or something and create the most coloful canvas on a tablet. I've never seen them doing it but is like aproper canvas. I am so grateful my family has always been creative so they are out harm of the delinquent plague.

stefalfie11 · 09/09/2017 11:46

This would be brilliant for us as I could use it to keep up with emails and do some online shopping and the kids could use it for homework, playing and watching videos

sunshinewey · 09/09/2017 11:48

My son is a mad gamer so there,s that, but he is also just starting out on his first year of serious exams, and nowdays all schoolchildren need a good pc or laptop to be able to keep homework completed etc, money is very sparse and im really worrying about the near future so this would be a real godsend, many thanks Mumsnet x

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 09/09/2017 11:50

Oh fun :)

We're actually looking at all the refurb'd laptops at the moment as a new one is out of our price range! DD's using one that has to be propped against something heavy as it's so old the hinges have snapped! Why does she need a laptop rather than a tablet? Well she's yr9 and uses it a lot for homework - her school now posts all homework etc online plus she uses a graphics tablet that needs to be plugged into one. She draws and is teaching herself Korean - the tablet is the best way to practice writing.

My son is starting comprehensive school soon, a new laptop would make life a lot easier for him to do his homework.

phillip666 · 09/09/2017 12:14

I Am Completely Lost Without My P.C

Without It

It Would Be Terribly Difficult To Keep In Contact
With Family Abroad -

Also Keeping The Children Happy
With Games/ Entertainment And learning
Is A God Send

andywedge · 09/09/2017 12:14

Mys on really could do with one, if only st stop him 'borrowing' mine

pgwynne · 09/09/2017 12:15

My son has just started senior school onTuesday. Luckily we bought him a surface pro for Xmas. Up until now he used it for online games but now he has to start using it for his homework. We have to now purchase a memory stick so that he can save his homework to take into school. My daughter who is in year 5 at school, has to do her maths homework online.

glenka · 09/09/2017 12:16

Our laptop is so slow we could really do with a new one to do all the homework on.

Vonklump · 09/09/2017 12:18

Intel sold me with the spiel.
But we'd use it for playlists for the children, and homework predominantly, it would also be great for holidays if it was lightweight.

Theimpossiblegirl · 09/09/2017 12:19

I have a year 10 and year 11 Dd so the Stwins don't get a look in on the laptop. A new one would solve a lot of arguments.
I might even have a turn. Xx

iut044 · 09/09/2017 12:28

My laptop is starting to get slow so a new one would be nice .

123hartley123 · 09/09/2017 12:32

we could do with afresh one there are to many things which appear and we can't get rid of

starlingsintheslipstream · 09/09/2017 12:33

It would be great to have a new laptop to take advantage of the advances in technology since we last bought one. Sometimes it's hard to justify forking out for a new one but I think the benefits would be huge.

happysouls · 09/09/2017 12:35

My desktop is suffering all types of trouble...they age so quickly! I'd like something that can cope with having lots of internet sites open at the same time and switching quickly between lots of things. And I'd like my anti-virus to be able to cope with that without crashing all the time!

Pinkiepromisex · 09/09/2017 12:43

My daughter is in year 8 and the old family laptop is soooooooo slow. We definitely need an upgrade!
