Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

I have twins, both of whom need a laptop for their homework and we have only been able to afford one. It would be so great if they had one each and could be more independent when planning when to do their homework.

GetSchwifty · 17/09/2017 15:24

My eldest would love a PC for minecraft. Apparently having it on the Xbox isn't good enough!

Davenotdave · 17/09/2017 15:32

A laptop would be great to help me complete my masters degree. I'd also love something that could run some of the games I've had my eye on.

Mum0fF1ve · 17/09/2017 15:34

From our 17 y/old strategizing football coaching, 16 y/old checking out art history for her GCSEs, 12 y/old looking at new fashionable trackies, 10 y/old watching Minecraft YouTube tutorials, right down to our toddler playing Cbeebies games, we constantly have squabbles and sadly, factory resets due to our aged and used laptop. We'd love a new Intel please!

All of our IT kit is over 9 years old and therefore terribly inefficient, my son's school have started setting homework on online applications that aren't supported by the IT we have so initially we would use it for that and then for project homework later in the year and onward into high school from September.

As a family with 2 junior school kids and no computer or tablet.....we are desperate for a laptop!! 😂 Our old desktop PC finally died a few months ago. ...

Dormouse1940 · 17/09/2017 18:30

We don't have a telly in our house, which means sacrificing the laptop when DS wants to watch his 'Room on the Broom' dvd for the 798,267,003rd time....
It would be nice to have something that is 'his', all set up with parental controls so he can watch 'his' programmes without me worrying that he'll press something amiss!

Mammatron · 17/09/2017 18:39

My little one would be able to look at nursery rhymes on you tube, or ceebeebies on iplayer. His Dad took our laptop when we split up so now DS only gets my phone :(

Freeedom · 17/09/2017 19:11

We have one laptop that DH borrows from his work, which DS is allowed to use, but he rarely does as really DH is busy with work stuff. DS would LOVE his own, as he's really keen to start computer programming and making games - he's only 6 but very keen.

birdbrain21 · 17/09/2017 20:02

I'm hoping to go to university in the next few years so would need a fast lightweight laptop and if I get into the university course I want dH would have to be a lot morr flexible and work from home more to help with the kids and would need a good laptop for that. I see us fighting over it or having to buy two when the time comes!

cuppawithbiccies · 17/09/2017 20:35

DS is at uni so needs the laptop for his studies but also for gaming so laptop is decided by it's graphics card

cheekychicken24 · 17/09/2017 21:35

Something portable! We have an ancient desktop computer in the spare bedroom - it's always freezing up there!

ppmf10 · 17/09/2017 21:36

We would love a laptop to store all our family photos, as well as keeping in touch with family oversees.
It would also be great for my DH, his dream is to be able to be a writer - he could use it to study and eventually write full time!

JasmineGreen · 17/09/2017 22:22

My daughter would use it to help with recording her band, and to work on her studies.

Headfullofdreams · 17/09/2017 23:35

Their homework without stealing my laptop as theirs are ancient and so slow!

Megansmumsie · 18/09/2017 00:22

What we wouldn't do is drop it, seriously the old one was dropped by just about everyone and it is cracked to buggery!

Laptops are great for being so portable; baking in the kitchen- you can bring the recipe up online, in need of homework help- you can sit side by side and take an active interest together, want to buy something- shopping at your fingertips, playing a game but need the bathroom.... you get the idea! :-)

Well I wish my laptop was only a handful of years old! But it does work when it's not crashing so I keep going with it to mumsnet and email, youtube etc and I store photo's on there too. My phone is too old to cope with internet stuff.
Dd is now in year 6 and I think she'd be able to use a new laptop for her homework and going forward into year 7 she'd be able to keep up with homework, study, research, projects and more than likely the social media side of things as is likely to happen soon...My habits may or may not change with a new improved laptop but, I do like project type stuff; sewing, knitting, arts and crafts and get a lot of my ideas from the internet.

Neonrainbow · 18/09/2017 09:16

My lovely stepson suffers with low confidence at school but he's really creative. he's decided he wants to be video game developer when he's older. Id love to be able to give him his own laptop with some coding software to see what he can learn.

SugarMiceInTheRain · 18/09/2017 09:21

Our laptop is on its last legs now, despite being fixed several times it overheats and switches itself off with no warning whatsoever - it's used by everyone in the family for work, entertainment, emails, homework, games, banking, shopping, you name it. A new one would make life so much less frustrating! I keep waiting and hoping a bargain will come up...

HawkeyeInConfusion · 18/09/2017 09:25

Both mine do mathletics on a laptop. And the eldest is getting to an age where I'd like to introduce her to Scratch programming. I've also got my eye on learning Python.

What else would we do? Do an online language course. And play some games.

Mammytomany74 · 18/09/2017 09:27

Would love a new laptop ours is over 5 years old and is so slow. There are 3 of us who use it for studying I am doing an open university degree my daughter is at college and son is doing highers and other son is updating his CV at moment. With the majority of our learning online a new laptop would be wonderful.

Rakobane · 18/09/2017 10:21

My children have just started school so it would be invaluable to have access to a lap top to assist them with their learning. I believe with the modern world we live in children need to be able to learn to use technology in the home. Parents can then teach them to use it safely and they can also enjoy entertainment and games.
I am now returning to work after a five year gap and would find access to a lap top in the home helpful to apply for jobs and to catch up with the changes in technology. Family life is very busy and so I would like to catch up with entertainment in the evening when the children are in bed. This would be such an asset and great addition to our family.

Dianic · 18/09/2017 11:10

My DD has recently become a single parent and money is so tight. She doesn't have a PC or laptop and we can't afford to buy her one. She's starting college soon and a laptop would be invaluable in doing her coursework. It'd also be great for teaching our bright little grandson new skills and broadening his world...
She has an iPhone which is really helpful for staying in touch, but not as far as coursework and a future business are concerned.
Thanks for the opportunity!

Metellaestinhortobibit · 18/09/2017 12:17

We're looking for a new laptop that can help us with the following:

Me - editing photos for the children's charity I work with and managing their social media presence. Also designing the presentations and literature to take into schools and the local community.

Ds - accessing Steampowered for gaming and portable enough to take to coding club

Dd - completing online maths homework and accessing the school VLE

I hoping to start a freelance design company (of 1!) As my current company isn't 'child friendly hours' any more, but my pc is ancient, circa 2006 and just isn't running well enough to use any more.
I can use my phone for lots of online things but not anything good enough for work projects.
It's widely thought at school that all children have access to a laptop but that doesn't always mean they do. We go round Nanny's house to do Mathletics as it doesn't work on my phone. He birthday is October so we are going to all club together but a free laptop would be a dream.
