Technology has not only become such a big part of our lives, but it’s also evolving at a rapid rate, meaning that we can often feel that our computers and laptops aren’t keeping up with the needs of our families. Whether you and your family need a laptop just to browse the web and keep in touch with friends or you have creative needs that need to be met, Intel would like to hear about what you’d look for when purchasing a new PC or laptop for your family.

Here’s what Intel have to say: “If your computer is more than a handful of years old, you’re missing more than you know! Today’s Modern PCs are more powerful, lighter and have a longer battery life. But with so many different options available how do you know which one to choose for your family? Whether your children are school aged or studying at college or university there is some great video advice on how to choose here.

A new thin and light laptop with an Intel® Pentium® processor is perfect for homework, watching video clips and streaming movies from a service like Netflix*. However, if your child is more creative and likes to edit video or create music then they will appreciate the extra performance from an Intel® Core™ processor.

Computers with the latest Intel® Core™ processor inside are more amazing than ever. They have the fast performance to switch between multiple applications simultaneously and stunning 4K Ultra HD visuals. The long battery life is perfect to keep children happy when travelling. Some now have screens that flip over to stand like a tent – which is great for watching movies. Plus, there are new ways to interact with your computer, including voice and touch control and Windows Hello allows uses facial recognition for hassle-free log-ins. With a range of smart, stylish designs and screen sizes, there’s an Intel®-powered laptop at Argos to fit any budget.”

Do you have a resident gamer who needs the software to be fast? Perhaps you look for a long battery life to ensure your children can watch a full movie without needing a charger? Or maybe your family has a creative flare, so you look for a laptop and/or PC with extra performance to edit video, create music and or just manage lots of photographs?

Whatever your family would be able to do with a new PC and/or laptop, share this on the thread below. All MNers who comment on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky MNer will win a £300 Argos voucher.

Thanks and good luck!

Just a laptop which took less than 10 minutes to start up would be an improvement!!

UpOnDown · 18/09/2017 16:16

An all-rounder, for gaming, streaming and studying!

littlebillie · 18/09/2017 17:26

My children would have a laptop to work on and to work on their photography

Shiraznowplease · 18/09/2017 18:39

I would love a laptop as my son has online maths homework which we can't do on the iPad as it requires flash which doesn't work on Apple. We would also use it for online shopping (especially when dh wasn't there!!) and online grocery shopping when he was 😂 We would use it for YouTube, gaming (minecraft in particular) my ds would use it to learn coding and dd loves to look at photos on it. Our old laptop takes longer to load up than the old dial up internet use to take to load a page 😡 So we tend not to use it plus the battery life is awful

purpleskull1973 · 18/09/2017 19:21

My teenage daughter has just got into playing games through Steam online, but sometimes our old laptop isn't good enough for a game to work.

NutellaDoughnut · 18/09/2017 20:47

DS's school has coding lessons. I am completely left behind with this and would be able to keep up with a modern laptop and appropriate training app or website. Then I would be able to encourage him and support his learning. This is the main area I am at a loss with within his curriculum at the moment.

Due to my partner's job, we live some distance from both families; we'd love to keep in touch more regularly and winning this would enable us to do that; both via email and Skype. Thanks for offering such a great prize that will make a difference to any family.

Sarah250187 · 18/09/2017 21:54

My little one has just found out about the world of minecraft and we could use a new computer with better graphics etc so he can play it at weekends

Hopezibah · 18/09/2017 23:20

A new laptop would improve my blog-life no end! So slow currently to sort through photos etc.

The kids would love it for their homework as they get so fed up of waiting for this old one to log on.

And my youngest would no doubt spend time on cbeebies website games - but without the glitches we currently get.

elizaco · 19/09/2017 08:31

As my daughters are now in their mid teens, we're realising that just one family computer is no longer enough. They're needing computer access more and more for homework, so a second (or even third!) laptop would lessen the stress in our house!

rocketriffs · 19/09/2017 09:43

It would have to be robust and sturdy enough for the treatment it would get from my 7 year old. He has gone through lots of tech gadgets, tablets, Kindles, phones etc and they don't last very long as accidents do happen. A Waterproof, Shockproof and Childproof laptop would be the primary choice when choosing a laptop.

UnicornMadeOfPinkGlitter · 19/09/2017 10:43

I would love to go to uni, but one of the things topping me is money to buy a laptop/pc for me to use for work.

The dc's have ancient laptops that they an just about do homework on, so a new family laptop/pc would be lovely.

sadiewoohoo · 19/09/2017 13:19

This would be so useful for my eldest son at Uni as hes currently in his last year and has a lot of work to get through!

GhostsToMonsoon · 19/09/2017 13:23

Given that last time I let my children use my computer, they changed the author of the "Track Changes" to a random string of gibberish, I would give them the new computer. They could use it for photos, homework and games.

sashh · 19/09/2017 13:24

My carer who has basically put his life on hold to care for me while I work and study is just about to start a paart time MA.

Because he is going to continue to care for me he will be traveling 2 hours to uni and 2 hours back.

I laptop would mean he would be able to sudy or even just brows the internet on the journey.

lhlawrie · 19/09/2017 13:28

My son is now using a laptop more for school projects so a newer model would be perfect for us as my current one is quite old. It is also not working quite so well since my 2 year old split her drink on it.

SuzCG · 19/09/2017 13:49

A new laptop would be brilliant - our really, really old iPad has definitely seen better days and crashes out all the time now. My son has just gone into Y8 and has volunteered to draw up the flyers and posters for their school play - so it would be brilliant for him to have a new laptop with some whizzy software on to help him with the design & edit process.

Coffeemummy123 · 19/09/2017 14:34

My children range from toddler to teenage so a laptop would get plenty of use for work and play.

UnFuckingAcceptable · 19/09/2017 15:35

As a family with a low income we are very fortunate that our family have gifted us some technology.
We have smartphones but no PC or laptop.

I used to think we were fine without one but increasingly we find we need to go to the local library.
Writing essays for our eldest daughter is proving tricky so laptop would be used for that.
I am currently job hunting. Applications and tweaking of CV would be much easier with a keyboard so I would use laptop for that.
Our younger DCs would use laptop to play educational games that the school give us access to. It's very hard for them to play those games on smartphones.

If we don't win, thank god for the local library.
I'd suggest everyone seek out their local library if they struggle as we do. Free to use their PCs for first hour and cheap after that...plus, use local libraries or lose them!!!

Blahblahblueblee · 19/09/2017 16:37

I would be able to edit photos in my warm bed and not have to use our desk top which is in a cold part of the house. I'd also be able to be able to use a computer at the same time as my husband while he works.

maclinks · 19/09/2017 18:56

I would be able to grab some chat time, the laptop we have is always in demand with 3 children and homework I rarely get a look in.

gemima27 · 19/09/2017 20:16

look at where to go on lots of family days out - and then the photos from them

popsocks · 19/09/2017 20:26

Would love to have a laptop. My DD has started secondary school and all homework is online.
Her phone does not have the software required for some of it. She is getting a newer phone for christmas so will be able to do homework using it, instead of using the school and local library.

Crumblevision · 19/09/2017 22:38

My DD would use a laptop to create her own animations using Scratch Junior. She would also use it for practicing her own you tube videos (they will not be going live any time soon!). She also has to produce Powerpoint Presentations at school for homework so this would also be handy. No doubt she would also indulge in some Spirit Riding Free courtesy of Netflix.

malisa · 19/09/2017 22:56

I would use a new laptop for educational games for my children. Teach them all about world around. For me it would be perfect for banking and coursework research. It would make my life easier....making an appointments and budgeting our money....basically keeping eye on everything in family life.
