We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I once got chilli out of the freezer to defrost, I was late getting home so my sister started cooking. We sat down to chilli and pasta Confused my sister had a bad cold at the time and couldn't smell or taste a thing, she assumed it was bolognese on the side and I didn't know she was cooking until I walked in as she was putting it out

It was odd and not something we have repeated, but it didn't really taste bad since we all liked pasta (which is bland anyway) and all like chilli. It definitely didn't go with the garlic bread she had prepared to go with it though!

Having pakoras in but really wanting sweet chilli sauce with them and having none (this was only a couple of weeks ago), I improvised with tomato ketchup, tabasco and cranberry sauce. It was actually really good!

I actually love cold beans on white bread. Not the poshest of meals but it is one of my favourite emergency meals as I always have the two ingredients in the house.

libra101 · 20/06/2017 07:29

The Pot Noodle seasoned with tomato ketchup wasn't one of my healthiest choices! Filled a gap though ...

finleypop · 20/06/2017 08:08

Would always be toast, a sandwich or even cereal if there was no time to shop

lizd31 · 20/06/2017 08:08

When I was younger I always used to have toast & orange marmalade with pickled onions when I came in from a night out. I also love cold rice pudding straight from the tin.
