We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My biggest disaster was when I had cooked beef as a Sunday Roast. Everybody wanted Yorkshire Puddings - only problem was that i had run out of plain flour - so used self-raising flour instead. The results were not my greatest success!

Noodle sandwich. I actually now quite like them and choose them if I'm being lazy.

TheFrenchLieutenantsMonkey · 01/07/2017 00:03

Toast with mint sauce. It actually hits excatlybthe right spot now when you want to eat something but don't know whatbyou fancy Grin

Sacrilegious, I know, but microwave pasta with sauce.

Took me years to realise pasta could indeed be cooked in the microwave- who knew? You just add 3 or 4 mins to the cooking time.

I'm a bit of a ponce so pasta done this way does make me feel it's all gone wrong in life, somewhere, but it tastes ok enough.

Too top: pasta shapes are best this way

Edit: too top is supposed to say top tip.

Trying to correct oneself on the iPad (I'm not rich; I got one cos my laptop died and I have no life so needed internet access) is like banging one's head against a touch screen device and hoping for clarity

Cold burnt pizza from what my 14 year old son had made earlier on

This week, in the run up to pay day, I had no money at all. Thankfully my son is on holiday so it was just me to feed
I used the last bits in the freezer Thursday, it was some chips and a toastie pocket thing and I found some cheese in the fridge and grated that on top.

I have been known to lose faith in the middle of a recipe and fail to complete it. This has resulted in vegetables (initially meant to be part of a nice stir-fry) on toast with a cheese string. Not great!

my first ever dinner party my husband and I cooked duck with orange sauce, alas nobody had told me how much a duck reduces in size when cooked and we soon realised that our duck would only feed 2 - my husband went to Kentucky fried chicken and bought 2 portions of chicken which we covered in sauce and guests were none the wiser.
I was quite jealous of all the mmm sounds at lovely crispy duck!

ShowMeWhatYouGot · 01/07/2017 15:19

we had no fresh food in the house as we just got back from holiday, my OH was at Tesco picking by up a few bits to get by, I was stuck at home with a fussy toddler.

The only things we had were ketchup, mayonnaise, raisins, honey and tortilla wraps.

So my toddler had 2 options, ketchup-mayo wrap or a raisin honey wrap 😷

He devoured both & still asks for them this day?

Well, my biggest failure was an online order from Waitrose for our house warming party, which was themed "blinis and belinis", the order arrived on the morning and the driver said "OK we've got everything, except one thing...." peered at the slip.... "blinis?" he said.

Luckily I managed to get some elsewhere but it was a bit of a worry!

Findus crispy pancake sandwich. 2 minced beef with one cheese

Pipstarz41 · 01/07/2017 21:16

If I have nothing in the fridge I always resort to cereal for dinner! If we've no milk...dry cereal!!!

BeeThirtythree · 02/07/2017 08:33

DH 'invented' a pasta, cheese and sweet corn dish, served with extra aromat! It was so good we have had it again.
Have mixed eggs and beans together cooked and consumed with rice/pasta/roti
DBro had hot dog rolls, left over chicken and odd condiments...topped with cheese. Cheesy fiery pulled chicken rolls...they were delicious!
DM will 'curry' anything...breadcrumb curry?

LenaLouise · 02/07/2017 21:43

Chick Peas on toast 😯

SillyMoomin · 03/07/2017 09:43

Fancied cheese on toast but didn't have any bread. So melted a slab of Stilton and then topped it with cheddar.
