We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Potato salad and ready salted crisps in a batch roll. I'm usually a fan of multiple carbs but it was just too much.

After discovering the required soured cream had gone off, I improvised with banana milkshake to make a somewhat unusual milkshake-flavoured curry.

Kentnurse2015 · 19/06/2017 19:56

Pasta sauce with a boil in the bag rice Blush

HopefulHamster · 19/06/2017 20:10

The kids frozen pizza, which I then burnt. Not very weird but I didn't want it, then I was really looking forward to it, then I couldn't eat it anyway! Think I had toast after that...

flamingtoaster · 19/06/2017 20:11

One unusual combination which is actually quite nice is a cheese and marmalade sandwich. I first made it for DH's lunch by accident.

Emergency meals we've had range from rice and poached eggs to left over lasagne and tomato toasties, and cucumber/tomato/marmite toasties. We're quite versatile with the toastie maker.

defineme · 19/06/2017 20:15

Emergency snacks have included weetabix spread with jam or butter.

georgedawes · 19/06/2017 20:39

Many different things when I was a student including plain pasta on its own, dry cereal (no milk) and rice with peas in and nothing else!

rainbow1976 · 19/06/2017 20:40

dry pasta with grated cheese and black pepper - I actually really like it!

lolapops1 · 19/06/2017 20:42

Supernoodles with cheese on top,if I have any bread and butter this will be made into a supernoodle sandwich.

WowOoo · 19/06/2017 20:46

Spaghetti with tartare sauce. We were moving house and it was all that was left....It was nice, but would have preferred some toast.

maryandbuzz1 · 19/06/2017 20:47

We've had fish finger toasties before now..........we didn't think it would amount to much but we have had it since and quite like it! One disaster was sugar sandwiches !

moosexxx · 19/06/2017 20:48

Crisp sandwiches. Quick, easy and sometimes quite tasty (depending on the filling)!

towser44 · 19/06/2017 20:48

Substituting tomato or chicken soup for a pasta sauce!

MaccaPaccaismyNemesis · 19/06/2017 20:49

I once ate a baguette with frozen peas in the middle as I quite literally had no other food to eat when I was a starving student! Was strangely okay but something I have never repeated strangely enough!

spottypjs · 19/06/2017 20:53

Rice with pasata - which I eat happily. Mind you plain pasta with grated cheese on top is also nice!

pfcpompeysarah · 19/06/2017 20:54

When I first moved to London in my twenties I ended up rooming at a trainee nurses lodgings because my mate had moved in with her boyfriend and her room was free. The cooking facilities were shared, minimal and to be quite frank, disgustingly dirty, so I tended not to linger in there long, my go to meal which was filling was bacon, mixed with a tin of spaghetti hoops, poured over pasta ... luckily my cooking skills have improved and expanded in range since then!!

MrsDramaQueen · 19/06/2017 20:55

Mine is Crumpets with Marmite on. When I go away on holiday I miss my Marmite. Lol. I also love my chocolate and go through stages of snacking on crisps. During the hotter weather though I tend to go off them.

I also absolutely love Strawberries and extra thick cream, I can't get enough of them.

lolly2010 · 19/06/2017 20:56

my husband cooked loads of pasta then realised the meat he had got out of the freezer was a Beef Madras not a bolognese.

nicsal05 · 19/06/2017 20:56

crisp sandwiches ! Doesn't get any better than carbs on carbs Grin

shivbrown · 19/06/2017 20:57

Roast ham and baked beans, never had any bread for toast so had a pitta bread!

yesprincess1 · 19/06/2017 21:00

Supernoodles with a cheese slice!

RhythmAndStealth · 19/06/2017 21:00

All of these "food failures" pale in comparison to failing to pay and treat workers properly.

littletwofeet · 19/06/2017 21:01

Pasta with olive oil and parmasen is my emergency dinner if no food.
Have also ate dry cereal.

freefan · 19/06/2017 21:01

I love a stirfry and find that draining off the tomato sauce and combining the beans into my sweet and sour covered chicken on top on the stir fry is delicious
