We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My worst ever emergancy meal was a tinned mackerel with dried cheerioes!!

LeeR1985 · 19/06/2017 21:03

I dropped my noodle flavouring sachet on the floor when I last made noodles, grabbed a bunch of random stuff out the spice rack and mixed them in. Can't even remember what I used.. it wasn't very tasty though haha

gd2011 · 19/06/2017 21:03

Tomato ketchup sandwiches.

CMOTDibbler · 19/06/2017 21:08

A reasonably successful emergency food is tomato soup with rice noodles added to it.
Less successful was when DH decided to make tuna curry using a jar of sauce.

But the only takeaway that delivers at all here is an indian restaurant, so no chance of Deliveroo!

I thought we had some potatoes to make jackets, but in the end we had crisp sandwiches, I had salt and vinegar, my daughter had beef and my hubby had cheese and onion!!

I don't mind as I love crisp sarnies!

katastrophy13 · 19/06/2017 21:09

It has to be marmite spaghetti for me, everytime, just need marmite, butter, melt them in a pan and add them it to pasta.

Mum2mischiefs · 19/06/2017 21:14

As a poor student violin starts playing I 'may' have mixed Coffeemate with water and poured on my cornflakes...sad times indeed!

addverbaan · 19/06/2017 21:19

Jacket potato with tuna is my go to have no time or energy food

KAKADU2001 · 19/06/2017 21:20

You can't beat brown sauce sandwiches on fresh cut bread with English salted Butter.

MimiJoy · 19/06/2017 21:22

Baked beans mixed with corned beef when I was starving after a night out. Not only did it look disgusting, it tasted it too!

hdh747 · 19/06/2017 21:23

A friend and I came in after having the odd drink too many and we were soooo hungry we put baked beans, chicken soup, and ham in one pan and ate if out of bowls.

Ganne1 · 19/06/2017 21:26

Come on. There's always some French cheese in the fridge, and some crackers to hand.

renas · 19/06/2017 21:28

Fish finger sandwich

shellywkd · 19/06/2017 21:28

My daughter has been known to eat cheese spread on toast as an emergency snack when we have had to rush to and from cricket. I on the other hand am more likely to eat salad cream on toast as a meal replacement when I cannot be bothered and i'm not ashamed to admit I love it.

Maiyakat · 19/06/2017 21:30

Apparently sweet and sour sauce doesn't go too well with pasta... Blush

Lisapaige24 · 19/06/2017 21:34

I have odd combinations quite often but my oddest must be peanut butter and beetroot sandwiches which were really nice

andywedge · 19/06/2017 21:38

When I was a student, after a late night I decided chips and curry sauce was in order. Sadly, the queue in my curry house was huuuge. So, I set off home where I made my own chips and curry sauce. The chips were fine, but I'd got it into my head adding curry powdder to gravy would make curry sauce. It was not a good idea.

mandes1 · 19/06/2017 21:45

It has to be good ol beans on toast. Wholesome, nutritious (well the low sugar version) and filling.

sausagepastapot · 19/06/2017 21:45

Fish fingers mixed with pasta, ketchup and peas. Even better you have cheese to grate on top.

Ethan260908 · 19/06/2017 21:48

If it didn't lead to tummy troubles I'd eat Mint sauce all day every day from the jar - alais tis not considered a "healthy diet" from those who sadly and probably do know better than me...[sic]

littlemonkeyz · 19/06/2017 21:49

My favourite emergency meal is pasta, Refried beans and grated cheese. Yum!

boobybirdsworth · 19/06/2017 21:50

One of my worst was the first time I made rice pudding, far too much rice and coconut and too little milk. It was dry and burnt and only fit for the bin!!

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 19/06/2017 21:56

Ham, cheddar and sliced up pepperami on crackers... possibly the worst looking antipasti in the world.... quite delicious though. (We have since repeated!)

fld14 · 19/06/2017 21:59

Weetabix with butter on. Quite nice actually. Pilchard curry when I had no money. Now I wouldnt touch it :0)

cannotmakemymindup · 19/06/2017 22:00

Just general lucky dip with the freezer. I don't label things much, think freezer bags where its got a bit squashed. So sometimes I get out one thing but it is not what I thought it was. So definitely mystery meat with mystery sauce. I mean I've cooked it at some point in the last year... Or even thinking it was apple crumble and it was breaded brie!!
