We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Only once but I was so hungry and tired I could not make myself to heat up anyting. There was strawberry jelly and cold rice in the fridge. Had it all and went to bed without having a second thought...Maybe I do now!

Growing up, my Dad always made us some weird stuff from the freezer - the weirdest was probably fish fingers, waffles, mini sausage rolls and chicken curry that was left over from the day before.

Pasta and beans has been used to feed hungry boys in a hurry before

Pikmin · 19/06/2017 22:10

This week actually has been my worst, had one pasta and sauce macaroni packet, but needed to feed 3 so chucked in a bag of cheese pirogi (?) dumplings that I got to try, but didn't realise they were sweet cheese. We won't be having macarogi again.

Pesto on ritz crackers, when I was really skint as a student. Very tasty!

Hopezibah · 19/06/2017 22:14

My emergency meal tends to end up being crisps dipped in cream cheese! In desperation I've even had sauerkraut with my crisps / cream cheese combo too.

For the kids it ends up being a fried egg and there's only so many times you can get them motivated to eat a fried egg before it gets utterly boring!

sarah861421 · 19/06/2017 22:23

sugar sandwiches when I was younger but also a cold tinned tomatoes when desperate

beeelaine · 19/06/2017 22:24

gooseberry crumble on buttered bread - to be fair I was a bit merry after an ickle drinkiepoo in the sun, but it did taste quite good!

emmmaaa26 · 19/06/2017 22:26

My quick snack when I cant be bothered is a tomato ketchup and vinegar sandwich.

PickAChew · 19/06/2017 22:39

No last minute throw it together meals because I'm not that disorganised but, as a really skint student, I made some macaroni ceese burgers. Being veggie, they used wholemeal flour for the cheese sauce, so already onto a loser there. The recipe called for frozen green beans. I didn't have any as I don't like the, so I used Ross minted peas bought from a discount freezer shop.

Actually the only thing I've ever cooked that was completely inedible.

Oven chips still frozen after an hour of cooking in an empty oven,i cried so much my oh made a quick dash to the chippy

BonjourMeDarlin · 19/06/2017 22:49

My mum got a huge new slow cooker so I offered to cook a roast dinner for all the family with it.
Lots of us were sat there hungry and I dished up the dinner. Half of it was hard as rock and half of it was squishy and over cooked.
I thought you literally chucked every ingredient in at the same time, potatoes, veg whatever and gave it a mix around and ate it few hours later. Confused
Now I know that it isn't done that way. It doesn't matter as I am not allowed to use their slow cooker anyway. Grin

Corned beef and ketchup over pasta - desperate times called for desperate combinations

user1492794090 · 19/06/2017 22:55

Adding soy sauce to everything... pasta, rice... because I had run out of other condiments haha

KittyKat88 · 19/06/2017 22:59

Brown sugar and banana toasties - sweet and lush - yum!

IlsaLund · 19/06/2017 22:59

Cereal with water - yuk.
In an attempt to improve it I added glacé cherries as they were the only sweet thing I had. It was vile
If I remember correctly it was shredded wheat which isn't the most appetising thing anyway.

compy99 · 19/06/2017 23:01

mashed potato followed by a tin of peaches, long time ago when running fridge and freezer down before moving!

Theimpossiblegirl · 19/06/2017 23:05

Pot Noodle sandwich :)

Sid98 · 19/06/2017 23:40

Melting chocolate with milk as i had run out of cocoa powder

glenka · 19/06/2017 23:40

Crisps sandwiches because I didn't have anything to put in them.

dadshere · 19/06/2017 23:44

I have plucked the mould off of bread before toasting and eating it. Put lots of jam on it, you can barely tell :(

caoraich · 19/06/2017 23:53

Coming back from a conference at 11pm and knew there was naff all in the house

Grabbed 40-odd UHT milks from said conference

On arrival used flour, sugar and UHT milk to make the worlds least pleasant (and eggless) pancakes.

Realised I had nothing to spread on them. Boiled up some mystery blackcurrant liqueur that I'd found at back of booze cupboard, until it was a sticky sauce. Inhaled booze fumes, felt slightly woozy and not hungry for pancakes any more

After doing said boiling, realised that I could have just drunk the mystery liqueur and saved myself the bother Blush

JudyBlumeForever · 19/06/2017 23:53

My dc demand a pudding after their dinner. This evening we'd run out of the little pots of custard I normally give them. So I dove into the freezer to search for ice lollies, but due to hot weather they'd all been consumed.

In a fit of desperation I artistically arranged some ice cubes on two plates, and explained that today pudding was a rare delicacy called 'eskimo cubes' the 3 year old totally fell for it, the 8 year old was slightly less than impressed

glennamy · 20/06/2017 00:05

In my late teens and after a night out all I had in the fridge was an onion and condiments, so i scoured the cupboards and found a tin of pilchards so i made pilchard, raw onion and mustard sandwiches... They didn't taste as nice coming back up the other way! :)

voyager50 · 20/06/2017 00:09

Left over mashed potatoes in bread rolls with a bit of tomato ketchup added!
