We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

Oh I have had many mini food failures, usually when pennies are really tight! Crisp Sandwiches, Pasta and Ketchup, watered down milk to make it last longer - but I have to say I confess that my worst failure was some stale French stick, smeared with ketchup and grated cheese and then attempted to heat up using an iron!

baked bean sandwich with smoky bacon crisps crushed over the beans.

Rae1000 · 28/06/2017 14:12

pot noodle and marite toast (a student favourite of mine!)

merlymerly · 28/06/2017 15:21

Jam on shredded wheat (with just a hint of milk)

My oven broke once when I was cooking a huge family meal, I was determined to make a good impression on my then new boyfriends parents so I wasn't going to let this disaster stop me! There was no longer a 'roast' to be had but I still had a hob and I still had veg! We ended up with a dinner of sprouts, mashed carrot and swede plus boiled parsnips (not the best type I know) and a whole plateful of gravy to cheer it up a bit! I held on to my saving grace of the chocolate gateau I'd bought but when I went to open it it spilled all over the kitchen floor! So we had whipped cream, grapes and cheese for pudding (I had wanted to bake my own biscuits in my broken oven). It was a pure disaster and the most random meal I have ever eaten!!!! I was crushed inside but my boyfriends (now my husbands) parents said they admired my resilience and ahem, 'creativity' and in the end my first impression although didn't go as planned was a good one! We go out for our meals now, I cant take that risk again but maybe next time I will use Deliveroo for a change....

I've been known to reach for the jar of chocoalte spread and dunk bread sticks in it when there is nothing else. It reminds me of those KP choc pots I had as a child but on a larger, adult scale

sarahbrokenshire · 28/06/2017 17:57

I had to reach for cold Heinz Maccaroni and cheese #theshame

Still can't believe I made the classic mistake of sprinkling salt on their cornflakes.

Direne3 · 28/06/2017 19:12

Used expensive ingredients for a fruit cake but forgot the sugar.

lorettamc · 28/06/2017 20:02

My emergency dinner is a bowl of muesli.

mummsie72 · 28/06/2017 21:41

Porridge for breakfast dinner and tea due to a bad back couldn't walk to the shops for 3 days.

Flapdoodles · 28/06/2017 22:50

Unfortunately I have a few - cream crackers with butter, tin of cold rice pudding, cereal or tinned tomatoes and pasta.

I could write a longer list of planned food failures - I'm a terrible cook!

Qdos · 28/06/2017 23:08

Definitely pasta with butter and cheese. Yummy

sofieellis · 28/06/2017 23:14

I once eked out a fry up for unexpected guests by adding waffles, unfortunately they were sweet ones, not savoury! Not a great combination :D

svalentine60 · 28/06/2017 23:20

I was desperate for something sweet to eat and had nothing sweet in the cupboard. In desperation i sliced tomatoes and put them on toast. I sprinkled them with sugar and put them under the grill. When i took them out they were sweet and the toast was sweet as well. It was supisingly good lol

ThomasRichard · 28/06/2017 23:33

Plain pasta with sweet chilli sauce as a dip. I always either under or over-cook the pasta and dislike the child sauce. Goodness knows why I still try it!

funkyfreks · 29/06/2017 00:45

Natural Yogurt on spaghetti, with a little crushed garlic just for the flavour.

snare · 29/06/2017 07:00

kiwi pie didn't taste very good :(

whitbyranger · 29/06/2017 09:18

Cold takeaway curry the next day.

Dessallara · 29/06/2017 09:41

Once when we had no cooker had to eat cold beans with bread :/

user1472646069 · 29/06/2017 09:54

Boil in bag rice with tomato sauce.

MummyVicky1988 · 29/06/2017 10:03

Plain it's with cheese on - have eaten this in many occasions! I love it!

purpleskull1973 · 29/06/2017 11:23

Me and my mate Jane used to eat some weird things as students after a night out. Cheap version of Smash with Branston pickle stirred through it. Not quite cooked enough rice (drunk people are impatient) with tomato puree mixed in. Not good :p
