We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

I had a bit of an emergency when Deliveroo did not bring my food. I went to fetch it myself and it was stone cold. And Deliveroo only compensated me £2.50.

Unlabelled freezer tubs... I'm sure I need say no more?
We had cooked apple instead of leek and potato soup with crusty bread and spag bol on top of baked potato. That one wasn't too bad, but the kids were expecting chilli!

One year my mum wasn't feeling well at all on Christmas which resulted in her forgetting to turn the oven on to cook meat while we were visiting family. So we had to eat chicken nuggets for Christmas dinner out the freezer.

Bread and butter but no filling, done in a Breville sandwich toaster. This was in my student days, and I used to refer to them as ''nothing toasted sandwiches".

diamantegal · 25/06/2017 01:12

Dinosaur-shaped pasta and
pesto. Actually tasted fine but there's something slightly strange about eating it ate the age of 39...

I love peanut butter with brown sauce on toast when I can't be bothered cooking for myself.

Back in the good old days at uni my fridge was pretty bare, I had a tiny bit of cheese, about a mugful of pasta, one piece of bacon and one egg ! 🙈 I was absolutely starving after a night out so decided to cook it all 😂 pasta with the chopped bacon, cheese and fried egg on top, it was delicious and to this day when my uni friend visits, she makes me cook 'uni pasta' ! 😂

We were delayed at the Eurotunnel by queues and arrived at the campsite in France at 10pm to find everything shut in the local area (on a Friday night)! I had emptied our fruitbowl at home so two adults and three very hungry children had a fruit platter plus tea without milk!

rocketriffs · 26/06/2017 12:02

Spaghetti with tomato ketchup for the sauce and chicken noodle soup from a packet of noodles and a chicken OXO cube.

CecilyBlue · 26/06/2017 13:14

Pasta mixed with mushy peas which surprisingly was quite nice!

dontcallmethatyoucunt · 26/06/2017 17:54

I had almost no food in the house when returning from holiday. As a last hurrah we booked Deliveroo to bring us a yummy Wagamama's but 2.5 hours later, several failed attempts later (it's coming, its collected, try again, collected, oops our mistake). No food.

£5 voucher off our next order didn't really cut it.
