We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

My boys love pudding after dinner but they can be expensive so I make sugar free jelly (Hartleys do a cheap one) let it cool a little and add a tub of cottage cheese whizz it up with a blender and it makes a cheap mousse like dessert that Is healthy for them and it makes loads so easily does their puddings or snacks for a week.

We had an emergency delivery from Deliveroo - except part of it didn't come. Naturally Deliveroo couldn't be bothered to bring the rest - what, you want your WHOLE order? so we ate the refund instead. Oh wait...

Hot tomato ketchup sandwich... it works I promise!

KavvLar · 29/06/2017 14:28

Yes to cold beans out of the tin. That's been many an emergency tea. That and 'pickle sandwiches' ( pickle on bread - has now become a staple in our house)

Cereal is the major back up plan here when the fridge is bare! Yes eaten dry too, horrid really! Curry teamed with instant Risotto (think rice Pot Noodle) when I'm out of basmati rice. The most epic fail wasn't taking what I thought were chicken breasts out of the freezer to find several hours later that it was a load of breadcrumbs. Doh!

Mine always seems to be a quick combinaton of scrambled egg with mushroom or ham thrown in

becky004 · 29/06/2017 16:14

Cream cheese and strawberry jam on toast!

Booboobooboo84 · 29/06/2017 16:26

Potato waffles cooked in the toaster. Yum yum

Summerdays949 · 29/06/2017 16:31

I had made a lovely tea, or so I thought. I put everything in the slow cooker and put it going in the morning. I fortunately I guess it was on for too long as it was all dried out, crusty and hard. Completely inedible.....almost. We managed to rescue some and ran to the chippy to get some chips to go with it. Nightmare, but worked out in the end.

pasta on its own with loads of butter, not too good for my diet but there was nothing else in!

JulesJules · 29/06/2017 16:55

I love emergency crisp sandwiches...

My usual emergency standby is pasta with olive oil/butter, lemon, Parmesan and lots of black pepper

Omelettes or scrambled egg with whatever is in the fridge chucked in

As a student I used to have a tin of chopped tomatoes heated up in the microwave with a splodge of Greek yoghurt, bit of olive oil and black pepper - 'Greek Tomato Soup' Grin or my favourite getting in from the pub with the munchies snack - a big bowl of hot peas (minted peas were best), plus salt, pepper and mayo and lots of buttered white plastic bread - pea sandwiches, yum.

defrosted a tub of homemade chicken soup , made bread rolls with kids, went to cook the soup and it was apple sauce!!!

ginsterloo · 29/06/2017 17:25

Ketchup sandwiches or if no ketchup then salad cream sandwiches!

tubbyj · 29/06/2017 18:13

tinned new poatoes, veg and pie all cold staight from the container

Dan35 · 29/06/2017 18:20

I opened my Tupperware lunch half an hour before a job interview and realised I couldn't find any knives or forks, so I had to use two tea stirrers and a paper cup to eat my lunch Blush

Blondie1982 · 29/06/2017 18:44

Pasta with ketchup

user1497997754 · 29/06/2017 19:03

Tinned new potatoes sliced, boiled eggs 2, butter, grated cheese and mayonnaise....def my favourite comfort and old favourite meal yum yum

hann24 · 29/06/2017 19:06

Planned to have beans on toast, but turned out all the bread was mouldy. So I had beans on rice cakes instead.

meggysar · 29/06/2017 19:36

An out of date rather sad cheesecake from the freezer that was definitely past its best when guests arrived unexpectedly

Quailingtonsmithe · 29/06/2017 19:55

There's a few but one that surprisingly ended up quite nice was peanut butter sandwiches with walker bbq crisps. No one in the house would eat the bbq flavour out of the multipacks but in one emergency food situation I discovered they went really nice with peanut butter!

Another would be Ritz crackers out the box dunked in dairylea 😊

cookie09 · 29/06/2017 20:04

Boiled rice with wafer thin ham when we are desperate :O

Loftzilla · 29/06/2017 20:10

Don't knock bread and dripping! The day after we've had a nice piece of roast beef and I've saved the dripping, (beef fat with jellied stock underneath), I sometimes sneak a slice! A bit of the jellied stock spread with a little of the fat, a sprinkle of salt, delicious!

Minnibix · 29/06/2017 20:36

Cold rice pudding with a little jam to jazz it up a bit, desperate times :D

AutumnElla · 29/06/2017 21:20

Ketchup sandwiches!

freedomofspeech · 29/06/2017 21:47

Vegan omelettes that ended up like cakes!!!
