We all have those moments: you had to work late, drinks with friends went on longer than expected, you’ve been stuck in traffic for hours, and when you get home you realise that you haven’t eaten. These are the points where we just reach for whatever’s left in the cupboard. Thoughts of nutritional value, appearance, even taste, go out the window and all you can think about is eating. Fast.

Mumsnet has discussed a lot of strange food combinations over the years; that’s why Deliveroo has come here to ask about the weirdest ‘emergency dinners’ you’ve ever had to resort to – those last minute grab-anything-out-of-the-fridge-and-throw-it-on-a-plate meals.

Here's what they have to say: 'We know what it’s like when you’re up against it. You haven’t had chance to rustle something up for yourself let alone get anything sorted for the kids. On those days, there’s no need to reach for the mystery jar lurking at the back of the cupboard when you can order something healthy and delicious from Deliveroo. We’re all about bringing you great food, from great restaurants, quickly. If you’ve got the app you can even order on your way home and meet your Deliveroo rider at your door. So the next time you’re in a sticky food situation, don’t rummage around in the fridge, get your favourite restaurant delivered to keep the whole family happy.'

Maybe you’ve been known to reach for the baked beans and eat them cold from the tin, or plain pasta with cheese? Perhaps you’ve gone even further and come up with some really questionable combinations! Whatever it is, we’ve all been there, so don’t be shy – post on the thread with your emergency food failures.

Every Mumsnetter who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw, where one lucky winner will be sent a £300 voucher of your choice (from a list).

Thanks and good luck!

jamielmdjs · 26/06/2017 18:38

scrambled egg mixed with half a tin of beans. It looked like puppy vomit but actually tasted really good.

Spices001 · 26/06/2017 20:02

Big bowl of bread sauce, nothing else just the sauce

ellenemery · 26/06/2017 20:05

Frozen chocolate cakes, the little ones with flakes on the top, could not wait for them to thaw, just nibbled round the edges ad they started to soften.

puzzleyourface · 26/06/2017 21:36

Frozen mixed veg heated in microwave, topped with white sauce from a packet.
Yuck- but desperate times!!

Growing up I used to live on salad cream sandwiches when there was no food

Beige buffet - chicken kievs, chicken nuggets, ancient spring rolls, fishcakes, couple of slices of garlic bread - and not a fresh vegetable in sight. Needs must...

MrsJamin · 27/06/2017 21:04

We ordered nandos from deliveroo and it took three hours! Total failure indeed! My stomach was aching with hunger by the time it finally arrived.

FakePlasticTeaLeaves · 27/06/2017 21:09

Tin of cooked baked beans, in a bowl, mixed with a tin of cold sweetcorn. What an evening that was!

farhanac · 27/06/2017 22:32

Tuna pasta always gets a few groans around the table

Marie1276 · 28/06/2017 00:46

Fried left over rice with eggs and a bit of soy sauce.
Or boiled dry noodles with eggs cracked in it while cooking.
Both will be ready very quick :)

BigYellowJumper · 28/06/2017 06:00

Bacon and banana sandwich

StickChildNumberTwo · 28/06/2017 08:45

One of my uni housemates used to think that a nutritious veggie meal was frozen peas cooked in the microwave, with cheese melted on top, then tomato ketchup.

pinkkc · 28/06/2017 09:30

I have to work late and my husband was left with our 2 children.

As I always do the cooking, my husband was in a panic as to what to cook the kids. If it was just himself then he would have made himself some toast probably burnt, but as he had to cook something substantial for the kids he had no idea what to do.

What is now a family favourite is now Called daddy's pasta veg.

He cooked pasta, mince , tinned potatoes, all the fresh veg that we had in the fridge and stock and gravy. Turned out kids love it and now we have to have it every Wednesday night. Of course I cook it now lol.

SmileyShazza · 28/06/2017 09:30

Well here it goes, I've been waiting for a thread like this one, I'd be interested to know what all the other #Mumsnetters feel about this? Whenever I have alot going on and I forget that I've not got in what I thought I had for my two young childrens (three & six) lunch I've had to give them a jam sandwich with a glass of squash and every time I have I've got a guilty feeling to the point I've looked up "is a sandwich an acceptable lunch for young children" lol which assured me it was,
I'm just wondering has anyone else ever experienced the same guilty feelings or even the opposite over feeding worries?
