AIBU to ask my DCs to cry using their inside voices? - £300 voucher to be won NOW CLOSED

Welcome, welcome, welcome to my first AIBU. Allow me to introduce myself, I am Count Olaf - the handsome, talented, actor extraordinaire. I have recently adopted the three ungrateful Baudelaire orphans after their parents perished in a house fire (perished means killed). I have kindly told them that my home is their home - but they must not touch anything. I have even provided a single bed for the three of them to share out of the kindness of my heart.

After instructing them to do simple tasks such as to clean the filthy bathroom using only toothbrushes, and to cook me and my theatre troop a delicious meal, they have the cheek to complain! They didn’t even applaud my theatre group's impeccable performance!

AIBU to think they are being spoilt brats and have a dangerous abundance of selfish disregard for me, IYSWIM? Tell me what you think and I will give one of you a £300 voucher - don’t ask me where I got the money from.

If you think I am BU, you are WRONG! Anyway, the theatre awaits…

Your Greatness,

Count Olaf

YANBU, they have a bed, some people don't. They are clearly spoiled rotten.

FeelingSmurfy · 21/01/2017 12:17

YADBU you haven't even mentioned any of the secret things mentioned on hundreds of threads a day that mean you have been here since 3 days before MN even started!

I advise that the children LTB

MakeTeaNotWar · 21/01/2017 13:25

Thanks goodness they used toothbrushes to clean the bathroom and not an actual - bleurgh - toilet brush. Have you got a bin in there for guests?

Ibelieve123 · 21/01/2017 16:53

Boundaries & chores help a keep a child safe & to understand that nothing in life is free.
What a saint you must be taking in such ungrateful children.
Yanbu just a uncle doing his best

RiaOverTheRainbow · 21/01/2017 17:29

Yanbu, LTBs. Have you considered sending them to boarding school? There are some austere excellent academies these days...

sk1pper · 21/01/2017 17:58

I wouldn't give them a bed, everyone knows children are riddled with fleas. Good luck!

ecuse · 21/01/2017 18:07

YANBU. I do this A LOT.

SummerHouse · 21/01/2017 18:39

Children are notoriously (that mean well known) ungrateful bastards. You are a very generous man who has fallen foul of a series of unfortunate events. Have a Brew

amysmummy12345 · 21/01/2017 19:50

You said they turned up orphaned, house fire yadda yadda.... They didn't turn up with a key to a Victorian safe did they? Hmm

MycatsaPirate · 21/01/2017 21:10

You think this is bad?

Wait until they are teenagers.

Then you will know utter hell.

Now where's my £300? I've got a teenager off to uni in two weeks and she seems to require a lot of 'stuff'.

boptanana · 21/01/2017 22:20

Yanbu draw up a rota!

nottakenpersonally · 21/01/2017 22:38

Grin just spotted this on Netflix and nearly persuaded DH to watch. Frankly, Count Olaf, my kids are all in bed at this time and we have shut all the doors so won't have to hear any crying. Inside voices or not.

I remember watching this in the cinemas a few years back, is it the same thing? It inspired me to read the books...

foxessocks · 21/01/2017 22:55

I'm so confused.

ButterflyOfFreedom · 21/01/2017 23:09

YABU - as I no understand!?!

EasterRobin · 21/01/2017 23:10

Do you want to borrow my 2YO for a few days? She loves cleaning. She hasn't learnt to cook yet but she's great at putting cheese in a bowl and telling people to eat it. Would that work for you?

CopperPan · 22/01/2017 00:19

Yes they are being spoiled brats and need pulling into line - definitely force them to undergo more training with a structured rewards and punishment system and their behaviour and attitude will change in no time!

HoneyDragon · 22/01/2017 00:40

Ffs. At least teach them how to use the proper utensils for the job. You're raising the next generation of spoonyfuckers if you make them use toothbrushes for toilets and the like.

ohlittlepea · 22/01/2017 07:32

Your Greatness,
With respect YABU. Providing a bed and toothbrushes to clean the bathroom is getting the children used to a level of luxury that just isn't normal in the real world.
Speak to your Sw about respite.
Then go AWOL when they return the children.
Problem solved.

BeeMyBaby · 22/01/2017 07:54

YANBU, I often tell dd2 to cry using her inside voice.

blackcherries · 22/01/2017 08:23

Their parents killed in a fire? Who did they kill?
Do you have a bin in your bathroom? If not, I expect that's why they're complaining.

InvisibleKittenAttack · 22/01/2017 08:54

YABU - they shouldn't be crying at all. In every job there is to be done, there is an element of fun, find the fun and snap - the job's a game.

Rosehips · 22/01/2017 09:38

Biscuit?

flamingtoaster · 22/01/2017 14:03

Have you thought of an au pair or a nanny? Alternatively you could always apply for one of the "supernanny" reality shows which would (a) solve the problem and (b) start them all on lucrative media careers.

GoodyGoodyGumdrops · 22/01/2017 17:32

What, still no diagram? YADBU!

WheresTheEvidence · 22/01/2017 17:47

Hi Olaf.

I totally agree with you I am a nanny and I think youre right.

The poor things have been allowed to get away with all this childish behaviour for too long. You need to stop pandering to them. I'm a bit busy at the moment ut can recommend my friend Nanny McPhee PM me and I'll pass on her details.
