"A cat who jumped up the tree and then stood on a bauble"

Hang on...are you saying that there are houses where the cats don't do that?

Is it not normal for cats to just move into the Christmas tree then?

In my house the cats spend all their time in the tree and every so often the dog tries to play with the tree dwelling cats and the whole shebang ends up in the floor...if there are houses where that isn't the norm, can we please do some sort of pet swap?

We had cooked a whole turkey complete with trimmings and put it on very high work surface to rest...the springer spaniel managed to push it off with his paws and eat the whole thing. Place was covered in buts of turkey and grease!

My parents' dog ate a whole bag of tree decorations including foil before they'd even made it onto the tree one year. Luckily she was ok!
She managed to find and eat various things from bedrooms before our aunts, uncles and cousins took our "keep ALL edible items up high!" warning seriously. They just weren't used to having a Labrador about!

Quite a few Christmases ago I came home to find my hamster's cage door open - PANIC! All was fine, she was in one of her tubes asleep.

When I cleaned out her cage the next day I found a wee bit of tinsel and a wee gold bauble in her wee house. Wee rascal had been up the tree.

Our pet cat is really devious. Her name is Ginger and each time she's done something it seems like she's laughing at us.

Once, she took a bauble and started playing with it. At that point we had no extra baubles and were looking for it. It's like Ginger had a sixth sense because before we knew it she was running around rolling it over. It ended up in the garden and by then it was too late to get another so we had an empty space in the tree. You're probably wondering '1 bauble missing can't have been too noticeable' which may be true for some people but as we decorate ours in a symmetrical way, it tends to be obvious. We giggled the whole day as DS hates it when it's not symmetrical so his eyes kept gliding over that spot haha. Ever since then, he makes sure Ginger is elsewhere.

Tabula - our cat wilfully ignores the tree, won't have anything to do with it at all.

My daft cats Christmas calamity was we had just finished cooking Christmas dinner and we have a mix of chicken and pork. Dh had dutifully carved the meat in the kitchen and left the pork string that held the joint together in the pan for binning.
As we finished lunch and went to take the plates away as dh entered the kitchen I heard him yell "oi you little sod get off that" cue the cat streaking into the living room with pork string trailing from her mouth, with dh in hot pursuit. It resembled something from a Tom and Jerry cartoon, she dived under the table and round the back of the TV all the while trying to suck this piece of string up like a piece of spaghetti. She finally shot around the back of the sofa and dh had her cornered. Just as the last bit of string disappeared into her mouth and she practically smacked her lips at him, put her tail in the air and walked off. Dh stomped into the kitchen muttering things about sodding vets bills and just you wait, I'm not rushing you in. We were absolutely crying with laughter for ages.

Crunchie the cat likes to get involved in the decorating by jumping into all the boxes and generally getting in the way. Her favourite is tinsel

loosechange · 08/12/2015 18:07

Our puppy sat so quietly whilst we unwrapped the presents. We then discoveresedthere were no chocolates left on the back of the tree.

Dolallytats · 08/12/2015 19:07

One year I accidentally left the fridge ajar. A few minutes later there was a thud and the sound of plastic bags being ruffled. By the time I got into the kitchen the cats had got through the packaging and eaten part of the raw turkey.

This year the cat swiped a fat felt dove off the tree and I found her playing/killing it.

marymanc · 08/12/2015 19:09

Our budgie spent her first Christmas with us last year and she tasted some Christmas cards, pecking them...she made her own ones...maybe she is an artist!!!

When I was little we had the misfortune to end up moving house in mid December. It was a bit of a crazy disorganised move as my parents are very disorganised Grin

We realised we were catless and came to the conclusion that my Mums beloved cate had done a runner in the chaos. Two days later we got a call from the buyers saying they could hear a cat but couldn't find it.

My dad had, during the move, unscrewed a wall panel to unplumb the washing machine. The cat had somehow managed to climb in and get boarded up in the wall. We recovered him. The buyers were not happy.

A couple of years ago I bought a real Christmas tree and was very proud of my decorating efforts and it looked a treat. I made myself a cup of tea and when I came back into the room my two cats had climbed up it, wrecked it and had promptly got stuck half way up it. We always have an artificial tree now!

littlelibrarylass · 08/12/2015 23:34

our six month old kitten got drunk. He jumped on the table and knocked over a glass of wine and got his fur covered in it.He then spent about ten minutes cleaning himself and fell into a stupor. We had to ring a friend who was a vet to find out what to do with him- milk and sleeping it off worked.

Birnamwood · 09/12/2015 00:03

When my jrt was a puppy, we left him on his own for one hour, one bloody hour on Christmas eve and in that time he managed to nibble one corner of every present. He also managed to pull the 6 1/2 ft Christmas tree over. He was barely 6" long so god knows how he did it. He looked rather chuffed with himself when we returned.

Fast forward 13 years and the same dog still loves Christmas. Last year he nicked a chocolate advent calendar, stole rudolphs carrot and father christmas's mince pie on Christmas Eve and then sat in front of the oven, on a stool, staring at the oven the whole time the roast was cooking. He's a bugger for food Grin

Our cat loves "helping" with wrapping presents. Typically this involves attacking the present (and your fingers) while you wrap it and rolling around on the wrapping paper.

Butteredparsnips · 09/12/2015 08:18

That will be the Boxing Day that DH took the dog over the field behind our house, for an early morning walk. A dog who had excellent call and recoil. Usually. On this particular frosty morning he didn't come back at all. Concerned by this unusual disobedience, DH walked over to the dog. And found him, right in the middle of the frosty field gnawing through a (nearly whole), frozen turkey.
We can only think that foxes must have stolen it from someone's garden, and I would love to know what that family did for their dinner.

Butteredparsnips · 09/12/2015 08:24

Oh and another dog who helped himself to a left over duck carcus. I had cannily got the duck for half price after Christmas, a saving of about a fiver. The vets bill was over £100.

foxessocks · 09/12/2015 11:38

I once bought my now husband, then fairly new boyfriend, one of those yard of chocolate bars for Xmas. My parents had a lovely labrador at that stage. I hid the chocolate in my bedroom where the dog was allowed anyway but somehow she managed to get in and sniff the chocolate out. She was the kind of dog that couldn't resist showing off her find though so she came running downstairs with the whole thing in her mouth! We all had to snap the chocolate off round her mouth so she was only left with a small bit that we couldn't get away from her! We were worried because chocolate is very bad for dogs but we rang the vet and they just said to keep an eye on her and she was fine. Lucky she didn't eat it all in secret upstairs!! Xmas Shock

foxessocks · 09/12/2015 11:39

Should say dog wasn't allowed obviously !

Purplehonesty · 09/12/2015 13:05

sigh. Can you add one packet of butter left out to soften to my cats festive tally please.

When will I learn....

Magicpinkshadow · 09/12/2015 14:26

As I was growing up we had a cat that stole and ate half the turkey, coming from a family of 9 it was a huge turkey!! It was left on the kitchen side whilst we ate dinner. When we cleared the table we saw what had happened and then saw the cat asleep in front of the fire with a huge belly. It wasn't until he got up we realised how distended it had become as he was dragging his belly on the floor. We called the vet who said to keep an eye on him and if he became unwell to take him in, fortunately he slept it off over a couple of days as was perfectly fine!

DrSausagedog · 09/12/2015 15:04

Our very naughty cat ate nearly an entire large tub of double cream that we left on the worktop before dishing up Christmas pudding!

Might you poor thing did suffer an upset tummy afterwards.

ToffeeAppleMarsBar · 09/12/2015 15:14

We once made the mistake of placing the Christmas tree in the very spot that our cat (called Mouse) liked to occasionally use to mark his territory.

I was happily, whimsically wrapping presents and putting them under the tree, feeling quite proud of myself for being quite on top of Christmas shopping for a change and I was very much enjoying watching the pile of purchased presents grow.

Around comes Christmas Day and I gleefully start putting the presents for our families in my Christmas sack, ready to visit our nearest and dearest... when I picked up a present that felt a bit soggy. And all the wrapping was wrinkly. And the next one was soggy too... and the next... and then it hit me. The smell of cat wee.

Blooming cat had only been sneaking around the back of the tree to do his 'business'. I even found a very hard dried up dollop of poo.

With little time before the grand present swap was to take place, there wasn't much I could do about it... Luckily the wrapping paper was quite 'foil-y' so the wee didn't damage the presents inside too much. A quick Febreeze and a re-wrap, and a note of apology warning the recipient to thoroughly wash their gift before use... and we were good to go.

The next year, we put LOTS of newspaper underneath the tree and made sure all presents were securely stored away from the pee-corner!

skyeskyeskye · 09/12/2015 15:52

last year I had a kitten who was 8 months old at Christmas. He completely destroyed my tree by jumping in its branches, sitting in it. He knocked off all of the baubles and bent all of the branches! I was going to throw it out, but bent it back into shape and put it in the loft.

(the cat went missing a couple of months ago and I would give anything for him to be back this year trashing the tree :( )

isamonster · 09/12/2015 16:29

One Christmas we caught the cat on the worktop trying to carry off the left-over turkey which was covered in cling film. He looked hilarious as he had wrapped himself around it in a tender embrace but really couldn't understand the layer of plastic getting in his way...
