Christmas is fast approaching so now is the time to make sure your home is looking fabulous and ready for all the guests and festivities. Valspar would love to hear how you’re planning to ensure your home wows this year.

Valspar says: “The home is at the heart of Christmas, it’s the place where friends and family gather to spend quality time together, so it’s the perfect time to give it a refresh to make sure it’s looking at its best. Valspar’s unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see, so whether you hope to spruce up the paint in the hallway in a shade to match a favourite fabric, or create a striking feature wall to match a festive bauble and complement your beautifully decorated Christmas tree, Valspar has it covered. Simply take a colour sample to your local B&Q and the exact shade can be matched in paint form.

Valspar’s super scrub formula also makes it perfect for busy family homes. After the party season, walls can be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour – so whether there’s been a gravy explosion or a cranberry sauce mishap, you don’t have to worry.”

So, do you have a particular colour scheme you're going for when it comes to prepping the home for Christmas? Perhaps you’re going for a neutral theme, with handpicked Scandinavian decorations? Or will you be keeping traditional and filling your home with reds, greens and golds? Maybe you plan to get crafty and make your decorations from scratch?

However you’re planning to decorate this Christmas, Valspar would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

I'm off work this week to do some serious decorating before I even think about Christmas!
My decorations have been built up over about 25 years, since I've had my own house, and through accident rather than design the tree decorations have ended up being very traditional in style-lots of red and green.
Part of my would like to set it all aside and start again so it could be all cool and matching, but apart
From the financial aspect of this, I know that when it comes to it. There are too many memories attached to what I have

MakeTeaNotWar · 21/11/2015 12:21

Crazily we've just knocked down walls and ripped out ceilings and hope to complete our new open-plan kitchen by Xmas. Stress is mounting!

StickChildNumberTwo · 21/11/2015 14:56

We moved house this year so are starting to think about things like where the tree will go in the new house. We had a wood burning stove put into our lounge which will just add to the festive feel.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 21/11/2015 14:58

I'm shuffling furniture around in the downstairs rooms to create extra space, looking for a sideboard to hold the DC games and arts/crafty stuff and putting winter curtains up.
I'm also eyeing up some deep luxurious purples from the valspar range for dd's new bedroom. I do a deep clean every week (except for wiping out the inside of the kitchen cupboards) just because of crumbs, DC and dogs.

DurhamDurham · 21/11/2015 15:02

I'm going to start getting the house ready for Christmas, with husbands help of course.
Our girls have recently moved out to go to Uni and are coming home at Christmas with boyfriends in tow, this is all really new for us so I want everything to be lovely.
I've had a walk around and assessed what needs doing, I've got scuff marks which need to be dealt with, especially in the pitch where it would appear people just throw their shoes against he wall when taking them off.

The bathroom needs to be refreshed with a lick of paint and a new blind.
If Ian feeling energetic we might pull he sofas put and hoover/mop the floor which doesn't see the light of day. I dread to think of the dust bunnies which have gathered there.

I might buy a few new kitchen utensils to brighten up the kitchen, maybe some new place mats and candles too.

I'll be buying a huge poinsettia to put in the middle of the dining room table and a Holly wreath for the front door. We don't go overboard with Christmas decorations but I have to have. Wreath of the front door or it doesn't feel like ChristmasSmile

Clearing out as much as possible to make room for new things coming! Tree will be traditional with lots of red, also bought Scandinavian looking fleece/cushions for living room to cosy up in front of the fire. Ideally we would paint the hall, especially the woodwork as that is the area that most needs it - will definitely think about washable paint as lots of muddy boots and dog and cats come through the hall!

HitsAndMrs · 21/11/2015 17:47

We are in the process of painting everything brilliant white and hope to get a new grey carpet. I've also just bought some new throws to hide the stains on the sofa!

WarmHugs · 21/11/2015 17:49

My living room is yellow and summery, so I'm planning on repainting a nice warm neutral colour.

The painting alone means I will have to do a full clean/pull the furniture out, and then do a deep clean on the carpet.

Then the DC will throw every and any colour at the tree and walls to make it look "festive".

HeyMicky · 21/11/2015 19:16

We've just bricked in our fireplace in favour of a suspended wood burning stove, so have painted just one wall of the sitting room in our planned colour scheme - the rest have to wait until the ceiling is replastered.

We were given a box of vair naive Royal Dalton ornaments as an engagement present so take our tree colour scheme from those - red, blue, pink and purple.

I used to be a total Scrooge about Christmas but then had children and bought a house. Now I go all out for the kids

katienana · 21/11/2015 19:17

I really like to avoid clutter so I take down any ornaments and store and then clean everywhere before putting Christmas decorations up. It means the Christmas things take centre stage and minimises the dusting to be done! I like a white and silver scheme with splashes of red to warm it up.

EasterRobin · 21/11/2015 19:51

We have a baby for Christmas for the first time this year, so our main focus is on things that she enjoys looking at. Gone are the classy red and gold traditional decorations, and this year will be all about bright, primary colours and sparkles.

Newquay · 21/11/2015 20:15

I'm desperately trying to 'Marie kondo' the lounge - I'm on sorting the kids' toys - but failing to get 4 year old into it: today he wanted to keep a whoppee cushion which had perished/full of holes. So plan b is to hide it all in garage.

EDisFunny · 21/11/2015 20:30

Deep clean is scheduled for next weekend so we're ready to buy the tree on December 1st :-)

The house will be cheerful and warm, we have Christmas themed crafts planned and they'll be going up as well.

DrSausagedog · 21/11/2015 21:02

We don't do any extra cleaning before putting up decorations really. We have to move a couple of bits of furniture out of the living room to make way for the tree though.

Usually we go for Scandi style red and white decorations, with some gold and gree. Nothing too garish. I do love all the decorations and tree up and can't wait for them this year.

QOD · 21/11/2015 21:52

We're all.about ré whitening the fascias !

annandale · 21/11/2015 22:11

I'm paying someone to do a big clean 2 weeks before Christmas - the whole downstairs. I'll do the upstairs while they are beavering away. We've actually started this weekend by having a massive clearout in ds's room so I'm hoping to keep that going and end up with a much emptier and more peaceful house for Christmas.

I like using lots of holly and ivy for decoration with curling ribbon and the odd red bauble - it helps that it costs almost nothing but it's also beautiful, traditional and smells lovely.

We do need to do some painting and will probably go for a very plain theme as dh's artwork adds a lot of colour.

purplepandas · 21/11/2015 22:37

Purple and silver this year. No special cleaning beforehand but that might reflect my slovenly ways. I take a less is more approach to Christmas decorating. That is until the preschool and school creations appear. Always room for them.

2Warriorsandawish · 21/11/2015 22:41

Learnt to crochet this year so making some crochet decorations for Christmas!

mrsronswanson · 22/11/2015 06:58

We always try and declutter the children's bedrooms in the run up to Christmas, but as they are getting older this is a much smaller job.
Then we have to move some of our normal decor to make room for Christmas decorations.
Don't really do any special cleaning, but I like a tidy house for Christmas.

DrewsWife · 22/11/2015 14:04

I have papered our hall and stairs. Silver grey wallpaper with either end having super hero comic at the top.

We are now having to stand with the baby so he can see them before he goes to bed and again when he wakes up. Sooooo cute! He likes the Spider-Man picture and chuckles and points to it.

Every one keeps asking my husband how he managed to get super hero wallpaper past me. And they don't believe that I chose it. Grin

We're having new carpets in the living room stairs and landing! Just in the process of choosing the carpet ready for it to be laid in December some time. I can't wait! We've currently got no carpet at all on the stairs so this is going to feel much cosier. Dh has also been putting coving up this morning to get rid of a draft that's much more noticeable now it's chilly

Catsgowoof · 22/11/2015 15:35

i'm hoping to decorate the dining room, christmas is the only time we really use it
