Christmas is fast approaching so now is the time to make sure your home is looking fabulous and ready for all the guests and festivities. Valspar would love to hear how you’re planning to ensure your home wows this year.

Valspar says: “The home is at the heart of Christmas, it’s the place where friends and family gather to spend quality time together, so it’s the perfect time to give it a refresh to make sure it’s looking at its best. Valspar’s unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see, so whether you hope to spruce up the paint in the hallway in a shade to match a favourite fabric, or create a striking feature wall to match a festive bauble and complement your beautifully decorated Christmas tree, Valspar has it covered. Simply take a colour sample to your local B&Q and the exact shade can be matched in paint form.

Valspar’s super scrub formula also makes it perfect for busy family homes. After the party season, walls can be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour – so whether there’s been a gravy explosion or a cranberry sauce mishap, you don’t have to worry.”

So, do you have a particular colour scheme you're going for when it comes to prepping the home for Christmas? Perhaps you’re going for a neutral theme, with handpicked Scandinavian decorations? Or will you be keeping traditional and filling your home with reds, greens and golds? Maybe you plan to get crafty and make your decorations from scratch?

However you’re planning to decorate this Christmas, Valspar would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

Put some Christmassy decorations up

freefan · 22/11/2015 22:28

We're due a new sofa, being delivered two weeks before so need new curtains and cushions.
Complete room change round and will get decorations up at the same time which will save us having to decorate until January, which is a very welcome bonus :)

A really good clean and making room for the Christmas tree!

alsproject · 22/11/2015 22:42

We have the normal cheap and cheerful decorations but each year we buy a couple of new quality decorations for the tree ideally with the year on them

fallenangel14 · 22/11/2015 22:50

Our lounge is red and gold. It kind of fits with the Victorian terraced house we live in so decorations match. Our kitchen is more contemporary and the walls are light grey. We have a purple sofa so decorations there will be silver with purple glass baubles. The Christmas fairy lights will match too. In the lounge they're warm, yellow light and in the kitchen a cold white light.

I like things simple and co-ordinated as my childhood was filled with cheap tacky multicoloured decorations every year. My mum still decorates in that style at Christmas. My children LOVE it.

lhlee62 · 22/11/2015 22:54

My husband is talking about a quick lick of paint to freshen the walls and maybe a good clean, but with 2 kids it is not easy to keep clean!

kerryv · 22/11/2015 22:54

We've had a big clear out and dump run this weekend. All the old toys donated to charity. Almost ready to get the decorations up.

CheeseEMouse · 22/11/2015 23:00

We are going to try and get the baby room properly decorated before Christmas. It's been fine but some plasterwork has needed fixing and it'd be nice to get it sorted for him. As for actual decorations I think they are likely to be placed high up so that he doesn't pull them over...

compy99 · 22/11/2015 23:01

a big clean up and then some understated decorations, have done the over the top decs so many times that we are having a change this year.

GillianY1 · 22/11/2015 23:08

Christmas prep means lots of cleaning all over the house......proper cleaning...pulling out all the furniture and putting some elbow grease into it! Love decorating the house for Christmas putting up the tree and lights and seeing my boys faces when its all done :-)

wingobins · 22/11/2015 23:56

I'm buying some new Xmas cushions and hoping to lay the carpet that I've had for months in my front room! With some nice scented Xmas candles the house will be really festive!

Laineyflo · 23/11/2015 06:05

We've treated ourselves to a new Christmas tree, and I'm itching to put it up! I'm also planning on buying more lights...I have the urge to to turn our house in to a Christmas grotto this year, so we'll see what happens!

AnimalAddict · 23/11/2015 06:08

I'm planning on painting the living room a lovely sky blue and decorating the house with lots of holly & tinsel :)

frazzled74 · 23/11/2015 06:14

I'm in the middle of a big clear out. I would love to paint the walls but lacking in time and money, so a big clean with bleach and steamer. Then I have some fleece fabric to sew some cosy cushions and throws and will put out some Christmas candles.

pusinky · 23/11/2015 07:00

There's a lot of cleaning! Then we decorate with a bit of tinsel and a big Xmas tree. We don't go over the top.

tiameg · 23/11/2015 07:16

A good clean as well as reorganising inside all cupboards etc is where I start. We also got a larger second hand table that will fit everyone around for Christmas dinner.

fm201069 · 23/11/2015 08:06

as we've gbot a new baby we're not doing much. we'll put up the usual decorations

createbeauty · 23/11/2015 08:29

I have been on Pinterest the last few days pinning loads of ideas for home-made Christmas crafts to make with my 4-year-old son. I'm crocheting snowflakes, Christmas trees, baubles, etc. I'm going to bake 3D Christmas cookies in the shape of Christmas trees, reindeer, and stars as well as mini gingerbread houses! We also have a Christmas cake that was baked in September that we will decorate a couple or so weeks before Christmas. Ooo, and I'm going to make some paper stars to stick on the walls to cover up any bare spots.

finleypop · 23/11/2015 08:35

My biggest priority is to declutter, otherwise the extra decorations can make me feel a bit claustrophobic. When I get the decorations box down, I use the empty box to pack up various ornaments & lamps that won't be required whilst the decorations are up. That way, when the decorations go away, everything comes back out of the box to be put back in place

suzyq50 · 23/11/2015 08:35

I've got to add a lick of paint to my daughters room as I'll have guests staying over for Boxing day.

Also will clean the carpets, probably hire one of those machines & do the job ourselves.

lizd31 · 23/11/2015 08:43

It's always nice to get the kids involved in making Christmas decorations such as Christmas crackers made with empty loo roll holders & tissue paper & I got a great idea from a friend yesterday to make little snowmen tree ornaments out of the lids of my medication bottles. There's a picture on this facebook link www.facebook.com/ThePaintedTeapot/photos/a.434547716605806.100026.431371226923455/1038000729593832/?type=3&permPage=1 I just thought it was a lovely idea

tabbaz123 · 23/11/2015 08:45

I am not sure we will be sprucing up the home too much before Christmas.... A good clean and tidy and getting ready with the decorations BUT I always tend to do something after Christmas - once the decorations are down then time for a paint up and early spring clean

WinterBabyof89 · 23/11/2015 09:05

We're incredibly skint this year, which is crap because it's the first year my 4y/o DS will really appreciate Christmas.

But, to get in the festive mood we'll be making and decorating with red and green paper chains to hang from the ceiling.
Cotton wool on the windowsills for snow, with Pom Pom snowmen & a Father Christmas.
Making our own wreath from Holly and Ivy that we have knocking around in our gardens.

sweetsomethings · 23/11/2015 09:09

i will be painting all the walls again and getting things all clean and tidy in the house

wobblywindows · 23/11/2015 10:31

I'm looking for extra storage for the teens bedroom, and I'm very interested in Valspar color matching to patch some of the paintwork where she has had posters on the walls. The bathroom might get a lick of paint, too. Colour scheme for our tree this year will be deep jewel colours- amethyst, turquoise, emerald, with white frosting.
