Christmas is fast approaching so now is the time to make sure your home is looking fabulous and ready for all the guests and festivities. Valspar would love to hear how you’re planning to ensure your home wows this year.

Valspar says: “The home is at the heart of Christmas, it’s the place where friends and family gather to spend quality time together, so it’s the perfect time to give it a refresh to make sure it’s looking at its best. Valspar’s unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see, so whether you hope to spruce up the paint in the hallway in a shade to match a favourite fabric, or create a striking feature wall to match a festive bauble and complement your beautifully decorated Christmas tree, Valspar has it covered. Simply take a colour sample to your local B&Q and the exact shade can be matched in paint form.

Valspar’s super scrub formula also makes it perfect for busy family homes. After the party season, walls can be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour – so whether there’s been a gravy explosion or a cranberry sauce mishap, you don’t have to worry.”

So, do you have a particular colour scheme you're going for when it comes to prepping the home for Christmas? Perhaps you’re going for a neutral theme, with handpicked Scandinavian decorations? Or will you be keeping traditional and filling your home with reds, greens and golds? Maybe you plan to get crafty and make your decorations from scratch?

However you’re planning to decorate this Christmas, Valspar would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

We have a stash of mixed colour decorations that we use each year, no theme, they are usually up by now but we've decided to sort it at weekend.
In the meantime I've got to get round to cleaning the windows (before the lights are put up) - would have liked to freshen up the hallway paint, it's neutral coloured but a bit grubby, that'll have to wait until the new year now.
Food spaces will be decluttered too for the 'Christmas shop'.

Getting rid of all the clutter

Jezzamk · 02/12/2015 19:11

Not very much. I will clean and vacuum as normal then put up some Christmas decorations and a tree.

I don't know why I bother with the tree becuase the cats will knock it over within 10 minutes of it going up. They seem to be having fun though :-)

jmgcomps2 · 02/12/2015 19:20

We are just going to put some decorations up

Blondie1982 · 02/12/2015 19:52

A good clean from top to bottom

hdh747 · 02/12/2015 20:06

I'm decorating the guest bedroom atm, and feeling a bit rushed to get it finished. Then I'll give the whole house a major clean. Then I will be decorating it quite traditionally with a proper tree, mistletoe, holly wreath, and homemade decorations.

cristalfiona · 02/12/2015 20:11

This is my first Christmas in my own home, so I'll be getting a real tree and decorating it with reds and golds.

smit23 · 02/12/2015 20:15

well I've just bought a new tree on ebay today, and I intend to go all out this year after not really bothering since 2011.

JWalker23 · 02/12/2015 20:55

Christmas and Decorations keep it simple and small is great :)

baconbap · 02/12/2015 21:18

coversnail · 02/12/2015 22:05

Plenty of holly and mistletoe, natural decorations!

casspuss · 02/12/2015 22:30

just a big clean x

Our living room is always red and gold decorations with a (real) green tree and a fake garland (with golf candlesticks, red candles and red votives on the mantle piece and lots of candles (mix of gold and red) on the coffee table. I love getting out the same decorations every year, with all the memories they evoke, and a pretty new one each year. I also get ds a suitably red Father Christmas decoration each year, which he can take with I him when he leaves home

The dining room has a mix of silver, white and blue decorations, which goes with the decor of the room.

There are 17 steps up from the bottom hallway to the main floor. I've been collecting Father Christmases and other seasonal soft toys for each of the steps. Recently, we've started buying "musical" versions to add to the step collection, so visiting children and adults Xmas Wink can set off a cacophony of Christmas songs. This year's addition is from Homebase and is a reindeer standing singing "Lonely this Christmas" into a microphone Xmas Grin Tacky or what?!

caker · 02/12/2015 22:40

Handmade decorations here - paper chains, snowflakes and salt dough. We're going to have a tree in our living room which is green anyway so hoping it will all look homely and festive!

Jenerate · 03/12/2015 00:00

I am trying to declutter to make room for decorations, to show them off. My Christmas colour theme is red and gold, and I tend to reuse old favourite baubles and decorations. I just add a few new ones now and then.

worriedmum46 · 03/12/2015 00:01

We have been decluttering the kids thinkSanta will pass by our house if he sees there is no room for new toys!! I've been cleaning like mad and hoping to put the tree and decorations up this weekend.

Gill81uk · 03/12/2015 00:31

I've hoovered under the sofas today, does that count?! Other than that I clear as much clutter as possible to make way for the Christmas clutter....erm I mean decorations! We have a real mish mash of sentimental and funny things but the kids love it and that's what's important to me.

steveyh · 03/12/2015 01:15

I keep the decorations simple, and go for silver and gold with white lights on the tree. Cards get hing up on a piece of string, so that we can see them but they are not in the way!

ElizaW922 · 03/12/2015 02:20

Am painting the hallway - and I also got a new front door. I think first impressions welcoming somebody into a home always count!

bunny7B · 03/12/2015 06:58

i always take time out to give the house a good clean , do all the skirtings windows etc , dunno why as its a mess after the tree goes up!

kristina77 · 03/12/2015 07:45

My Tree started off as Red and Gold but after letting each child buy a new decoration each year (Plus random bits collected while on holidays) it is now a mish-mash of colours and styles. Each year as we take them out it prompts conversations of "Do you remember when...?" and I love it. I'm not sure if I should present each child with their own boxes when they leave home or keep them and let Grandchildren add their choices (eventually!)

Dessallara · 03/12/2015 07:47

Oh, this year we should be moving just before Christmas, so I'm not even sure we'll have enough time! x

nazrana82 · 03/12/2015 09:35

i tend to buy new decorations every year (the old stuff just seems mundane) i dont spend a fortune on it though... cheap and cheerful is the motto. you get all the glitzy and glittery stuff from pound shops so it doenst break the bank. we do have a tradition of making most of our xmas cards to give out and also handmade gifts. this year ive been busy decorating these beautiful scented candles to give to friends and family... :)
