Christmas is fast approaching so now is the time to make sure your home is looking fabulous and ready for all the guests and festivities. Valspar would love to hear how you’re planning to ensure your home wows this year.

Valspar says: “The home is at the heart of Christmas, it’s the place where friends and family gather to spend quality time together, so it’s the perfect time to give it a refresh to make sure it’s looking at its best. Valspar’s unique colour matching technology can replicate any colour the eye can see, so whether you hope to spruce up the paint in the hallway in a shade to match a favourite fabric, or create a striking feature wall to match a festive bauble and complement your beautifully decorated Christmas tree, Valspar has it covered. Simply take a colour sample to your local B&Q and the exact shade can be matched in paint form.

Valspar’s super scrub formula also makes it perfect for busy family homes. After the party season, walls can be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour – so whether there’s been a gravy explosion or a cranberry sauce mishap, you don’t have to worry.”

So, do you have a particular colour scheme you're going for when it comes to prepping the home for Christmas? Perhaps you’re going for a neutral theme, with handpicked Scandinavian decorations? Or will you be keeping traditional and filling your home with reds, greens and golds? Maybe you plan to get crafty and make your decorations from scratch?

However you’re planning to decorate this Christmas, Valspar would love to hear about it!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

We don't really have a theme other than eclectic. We have a huge mix of decorations; I have a nice, simple white tree with purple baubles spread evenly and at the other end of the room goes the family tree with lots of random colours and homemade decorations, usually spread over about 4 branches Xmas Smile.

Gcalgske · 26/11/2015 23:13

Our house is still very neutral, moved in two years ago now and not gotten round to decorating yet. I'd love cool greys (like new concrete) with cosy red and dramatic silver accents throughout but I'll have to settle for them in the Christmas decorations...

Maddaddam · 27/11/2015 09:42

My theme is minimalist and more of the cool colours (silver, white, perhaps a bit of purple).
DP's theme is maximalist tinselly tat.
DDs' theme is homemade and the more the merrier.
I don't really mind, left to myself it would all be a lot more bah humbug so the others might as well let rip.

My Christmas present from my parents is to have my hall, stairs and landing decorated. The only time I have attempted DIY it has gone disastrously wrong and so I've been saving for ages. My parents gift to me is for this DIY to finally be done a fortnight before Christmas!

anonooo · 27/11/2015 13:47

lot of sparkle - silver, gold, red, green - overstuffed and twinkly. Lots and lots of fairy lights.

Peaches1234 · 27/11/2015 15:29

This year is slightly different to years previous, we are making the most of the little bits we have as our current circumstances won't allow for a "costly" Christmas. The children will get crafty and make our decorations but I don't believe we will be able to afford a real tree this year. For me all I want to see over this festive period is my children happy, spending time together as a family is the priority.

So no theme as such here or a shiny star on top of the tree, my families smiles will be brighter than anything I could dress up my home with.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 27/11/2015 18:22

Oh, and (a few pages later) my colour scheme is what Ideal Homes magazine have chosen to deam 'heritage red'. Neutral walls with a couple of cosy red nooks. Browns, creams, reds, wood, and mixed with the purple, teal and peacock blue baubles.

RueDeWakening · 27/11/2015 18:56

I have DCs aged 8, 5 and 2. My "colour scheme" mostly revolves around a "more the merrier" theme, and includes whatever tat lovely decorations they have produced at playgroup and school, as much tinsel as they can physically get their hands on, and enough glitter to make a grown woman weep :o

Since the spring of this year we have decorated every room in the house, other than a hole in the wall upstairs where we had a bathroom leak (eeeek!) it's looking good so all it needs is a good clean, not forgetting a bit of plasterboarding and skimming when the leak dries out, and we're ready to decorate.

cheryl100 · 27/11/2015 20:40

I just love this time of year! I am going to clean my house from top to bottom, put Christmas bedding on and light gorgeous christmassy smelling candles :)

fazkin · 27/11/2015 21:13

Everything has been given a good scrub and decoration slowly going up

mwatmough · 28/11/2015 10:44

Its already had a summer of decoration

sofieellis · 28/11/2015 15:10

We're having a desperately needed new kitchen fitted before Christmas, so Christmas cleaning and decorating will be very rushed and last minute this year! Still, I'm hoping to enjoy cooking Christmas dinner in my new kitchen. :)

badgermum · 28/11/2015 16:28

I usually give the house a good tidy and clear out in the weeks before putting the decorations up, then I like to go all out with a real tree and lots of pretty lights and decs

slithytove · 28/11/2015 20:09

We go for very traditional, with red and gold, lots and lots of tinsel! And Christmas scented candles too. Hopefully will do the tree next weekend!

angiesandhu1 · 28/11/2015 21:31

Clean the house from top to bottom before putting up the decorations. In my mind its like putting make up on a dirty face!!

Monkeyfeet12 · 28/11/2015 21:40

We had a huge water leak back in February which resulted in most of our house having to be stripped, dried and redecorated - it's nearly finished. But, I'm struggling to do the finishing touches - too much other stuff to pay for!! But I can't wait to trim up for Christmas, make it all cosy and feel like our home again. Golds, copper and cream decs and plenty of candles I think.

balloon66 · 29/11/2015 06:11

A real tree this year and lots of decorations

Wilhamenawonka · 29/11/2015 06:52

I clean and tidy so I don't have to see anything that needs doing on the day - my present to myself.

Our decorations basically look like someone has taken a glitter gun to the living room, but then I do let two young children help to decorate and they love tinsel and lots of colours Grin

Cataline · 29/11/2015 10:04

We're doing a big clean this weekend in preparation for Christmas decorating next weekend- at least, that was the plan! In reality, DH has sloped off to the gym with vague mutterings of "be back after lunch, might pop to shops" and DS is firmly lost in Minecraft.
In protest, I am staying in my pjs, mumsnetting and planning an escape to a local cafe for brunch! Obviously I'll change into proper clothes before heading out- no one deserves to see me in my pjs apart from my housework-abandoning family!
I'm looking forward to decorating for Christmas. We've always had a red and white scandi theme- I love it! Over the past couple of years, we've added a few more natural pieces into the mix, wooden and hessian decorations and ornaments which seems to work.
This year, I love the trends for blacks and coppers- I might incorporate that theme into the hallway so it doesn't clash with the more traditional decks in the living room.
DS decorates his loft room with blues and silvers- not my taste at all but he loves it so it's fine with me!
And DH is a bit of a grumpy monkey when it comes to Christmas decoration so he leaves the choices up to me although he always sorts the tree and lights which is great as I hate it!

TattieHowkerz · 29/11/2015 10:25

We don't go for a particular colour scheme, just what looks cosy. So the tree with lots of paper, wood and glass decorations, multi coloured lights etc. since having DD we try to make more of an effort with the rest of the house, which is a good excuse to buy more decorations! Have found some nice stuff with greens, reds and natural wood, which takes me back to my own childhood Christmases.

GreyerbytheDay · 29/11/2015 13:02

I wouldn't normally be decorating before Christmas (I have enough to do!), but having finally saved up enough to get new windows, rooms replastered and some carpet down (two years after we moved in) I was lucky enough to be chosen to test the Valspar paint and I thought I'd paint the sitting room wall so we had at least one room in the house which felt like 'ours'.

I'm normally a safe duck egg and brown sort of girl - but I went wild and chose a colour I'd never normally go with - a kind of deep purple with a greyish undertone. I was a bit dubious when I painted the test patch, but having done the whole fireplace wall, I'm really pleased with the results. It looks so cosy! (And much better than the chocolate icecream brown used by the previous owner). Just the skirting to gloss now before the carpet goes down the week before Christmas. Thank goodness for the online bargains on the Christmas bargain threads or I'd have no Christmas presents bought at all!

I have a box of decorations in icy blue, red, gold and silver, and I choose a couple of these colours each year for my decorations. I think gold and silver is going to look really good this year with the new purple wall (even if they'll only be going up a couple of days before Christmas!). It doesn't matter if the rest of the house is still a bit of a mess - I will now have at least one room that's going to feel lovely and Christmassy.

emmav6 · 29/11/2015 13:16

my boys are movng into their bedroom before xmas, we have gone with a minion theme :)

unadulterateddad · 29/11/2015 16:16

got lots of visitors coming over Christmas, so will be redecorating over December, lots of greens and greys in most rooms
