Inspired by the new PAN movie, Valspar has created the PAN Palette - a selection of colours which can bring the magic of Neverland to life in your home. Valspar are keen to hear Mumsnetters' top tips for creating a magical themed bedroom for your children.

Valspar says: "A child's bedroom is somewhere they can let their imagination run wild and decorating their space with a magical theme can help fuel their creativity further. The PAN Palette is filled with enchanting colours from the film so allow your child to be inspired by the pink of the fearless warrior, the red of the pirate that all pirates fear and the teal of the mermaid's lagoon. The best thing is that no matter how messy play time gets, Valspar paint contains a super scrub formula which allows walls to be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour."

So, how would you create an enchanted bedroom for your child? Would you paint the night sky on the ceiling? Perhaps you would turn the walls into a chalkboard or add a touch of sparkle with paint glitter? Or maybe you would upcycle furniture to give it a magical new look? Perhaps you've already done it, in which case we'd love to see your pictures too.

Whatever the theme, Valspar would love to hear your tips!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

My daughter, being a bit older now has a Parisian Inspired room. My tip would be to not overdo it on the walls but add accents with bedlinen, mirrors or lights. Fairy lights work wonders too!

We put a teepee in the corner of my sons room and placed a quilt on the bottom and cushions inside and he absolutely loves it, a simple addition which gives them a lovely magical space

A wall where kids are free to draw whatever they want

jayz268 · 15/11/2015 22:01

Choose a colour theme, then use the main shade and colours either side of that one on the colour wheel, to create a harmonious but mysterious space for your little one to enjoy.

I (and the kids!!) am a big fan of stickers. The kids rooms are all pale colours and covered with the latest interest. My youngest currently has sticker- type murals of mario and the crew jumping over things on the wall in a scene he has created ( and can tell the story of) by himself.

I have to split my current bedroom in two, putting up a stud wall with a sliding door in it so that Ds can get through into his space; Ds is 17 so I don't think he'd really appreciate elves and goblins, but Dd is still young enough!

I'm still planning as I ran out of physical energy and got into a rut, but the plan I have for nearly 9yo Dd's room is a fairy theme.

In the 80's when really ill I painted a series of the flower fairies in water colours that have never seen the light of day, so they will be going on Dd's wall. There will be layers of fabrics at her window and she'll have a valance above her bed head and layered rugs on a laminated floor. She'll have crystal knobs on her furniture and a crystal style light shade. I am also toying with the idea of painting one wall with a big tree and dancing fairies. and attaching dark blue fabric (or maybe a mural) to her ceiling with stars.

Our kids have had quite a few bedroom changes over the years, but our favourites were a space themed room for our twin boys and a Fire engine room for their little brother.

For the Space room, we painted all the walls and ceiling dark blue and used large stickers of astronauts, planets etc on the walls and glowing stars on the ceiling. We bought some fairly cheap duvet and pillow case sets, which had the same theme and found some great, cheap "lightsabre" type lights for above their beds. It looked fab for only a relatively small amount of money.

For the fire engine room, we found a fabulous fire engine style cabin bed from a furniture company on ebay. Again we used stickers of fire engines and other vehicles on the walls and found some second hand fire engine curtains, lamp shade etc. and matched with new matching duvet sets.

Both rooms looked fabulous and the kids loved them, and they didn't cost a fortune.

Can't add pictures as it was pre digital for me, but when I did my Ds's room when he was a small boy, I turned his room into a kind of circus tent. I got loads of blue and white Ikea fabrics and attached them to battens I put at the tops of the walls right the way around, I then brought each one to the centralised light pendant and put cup hooks into the ceiling around the light to tie the fabric ends to. The shade was a big pleated uplighter. I got Ikea striped fabrics in red/white and yellow/white and stapled them pleated down every wardrobe door, adding different handles to neutralise it. The window was dressed in a black roller blind and then red plain curtains to the outside (ends) of the pole (which I added brightly striped balls to), with red/white and then yellow/white striped curtains next. The walls were plain cream. It did look fab!

I minecrafted my sons bedroom-printed a load of blocks off to stick around the walls, but painted a minecraft cloud ceiling. I just used those tester pots.

I also painted my bathroom ceiling with leaves, to look like you are gazing up at trees?

selibobs · 16/11/2015 21:15

I love the stickers that you can put on their walls, its a great way to make to room look amazing and are really quick and simple to use. Both of my children also have fairy lights in their room which make the rooms look lovely at nighttime.

avery64 · 16/11/2015 21:35

My children are now grown up but we used to keep their rooms fairly neutral colours but provide them with themed accessoriies depending on what they were into at the time. This would include bedding, rugs etc but more importantly a box of dressing up clothes and hats as well as different sized cardboard boxes to build with. :)

HitsAndMrs · 16/11/2015 21:56

We are keeping the walls white for now as it's easy to change the room round with different things for the wall. They have flowery fairy lights and a lava lamp to make it cosy and some animal stickers.

We've just done a New York themed bedroom for my son. I painted the ceiling in dark blue and put some glow in the dark stars on it. The walls are painted in two different greys with the contrasting grey used to make building shapes on each wall. The carpet is dark grey and the bedding and blind is a New York scene. There's lots of twinkly lights to brighten it all up.

MrFMercury · 16/11/2015 22:28

We had the attic boarded out. It wasn't tall enough to convert into a proper bedroom so instead we made it a super den. My girls are 8&9 so we put down a big fluffy rug and beanbags. We used an old headboard as a banister and wrapped fairy lights around them. I also got some little led lights you put on your fingers (which I think were designed for raves) so they can have laser beams shooting out of their fingers. The walls slope steeply so there are posters waiting to go up and they have books and toys stored up there.
They share a room and the den gives them extra space. When it's warm enough to kick the cats (who also love the den) outside for the day we have gold paint and some glittery top coat to paint the stairs with :)

MrFMercury · 16/11/2015 22:29

I meant to say the stairs to the loft are in their room.

katieskatie82 · 16/11/2015 22:57

my sons bedroom is lego themed and i painted lego bricks all around the bedroom. He loves it! As long as its kept clean and tidy he's happy to play his lego there! x

paulaburnside114 · 17/11/2015 10:06

I love the projector lights for childrens bedrooms. My daughter has one that projects stars onto the walls and ceiling. They add a touch of magic to any room.

angiehoggett · 17/11/2015 10:49

I like to sit down with them and get them to draw out their ideas or cut things out of catalogues and magazines so I can create the perfect space of things they really like.

barker99 · 17/11/2015 11:08

Murals or stickers are great. A den would help too to make a kids bedroom magical

castleton · 17/11/2015 12:55

Putting stars that glow in the dark on the ceiling is a great idea

snare · 17/11/2015 13:59

involve your children in the ideas process :)

keshimonster · 17/11/2015 14:03

Wall stickers are a great start! You can get stickers for most themes! Colourful rugs too!

laurapotz · 17/11/2015 14:36

I love wall stickers. You can get such a great range and I don't need to redecorate everytime my daughter grows out of something!

Dessallara · 17/11/2015 15:04

I would love to create a fairy land in my daughter bedroom with a secret fairy door to a hiding place and lots of flowers on the walls and fairy lights :)

Kangakate · 17/11/2015 15:25

Painting a mural on the wall is one way, even changing the light bulb colour or shade to give a colour hue to go with the scheme. It doesn't always have to be expensive cutting and sewing items yourself to make little accents to go with the scheme is great as well
