Inspired by the new PAN movie, Valspar has created the PAN Palette - a selection of colours which can bring the magic of Neverland to life in your home. Valspar are keen to hear Mumsnetters' top tips for creating a magical themed bedroom for your children.

Valspar says: "A child's bedroom is somewhere they can let their imagination run wild and decorating their space with a magical theme can help fuel their creativity further. The PAN Palette is filled with enchanting colours from the film so allow your child to be inspired by the pink of the fearless warrior, the red of the pirate that all pirates fear and the teal of the mermaid's lagoon. The best thing is that no matter how messy play time gets, Valspar paint contains a super scrub formula which allows walls to be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour."

So, how would you create an enchanted bedroom for your child? Would you paint the night sky on the ceiling? Perhaps you would turn the walls into a chalkboard or add a touch of sparkle with paint glitter? Or maybe you would upcycle furniture to give it a magical new look? Perhaps you've already done it, in which case we'd love to see your pictures too.

Whatever the theme, Valspar would love to hear your tips!

Thanks and good luck,

My son would like me to paint one wall of his room with the South Downs(yes, really!!) complete with various farm animals and another with the sea and our local lighthouse. He wants birds and hot air balloons in the sky and trains along the bottom!

We are just doing DD's room at the moment. Need to keep it simple as we will be selling soon. I have been gathering up,some lovely prints, appliqués cushions, lamps etc from Etsy and from shops. It is all woodland themed bots. Also found so e patterns for making Ikea stools into giant toadstools, looking forward to seeing her little face when it is all done as she is very excited already!

littlelemondrops · 06/11/2015 09:31

I haven’t tried the paint but saw Valspar’s TV advert and it’s inspired me to get painting!

The kids would loveee character themed rooms so when I heard I could get any colour matched in B&Q it looks like despicable me yellow and frozen blue is on the cards, exciting times!

Our DS would love a magical Minecraft room - we have done lots of research and will paint one half of the wall brown for the earth, then a strip of green squares and then blue for the sky. We are considering having some wall paper printed with a picture of Minecraft world so it looks like he has a view over Minecraft on his wall! We plan to do this next Spring/Summer. He will love it!

Our first bedroom effirt was abed on 'over the hills and far away ' Tellytubbies theme. So sky, rolling green hills , little fluffy clouds , green grass and a lake.

Flingingmelon · 06/11/2015 17:36

What a coincidence, our mate is a street artist and we bought a load of Valspar paint and painted a whole mural round DS's room (I'm outing myself here). The room has a sloped roof on three sides so we painted it all sky blue, then did graphic mountains along the vertical walls with snow capped peaks. Finally we painted fluffy clouds in the roof and sloped walls. It's heaven lying in bed with DS and watching the 'clouds'.

He hasn't tried to draw on the walls yet so I dunno how good the paint is at being cleaned (I bought scrubbable) but it certainly went on nicely.

sharond101 · 06/11/2015 19:54

We use stickers and change the theme regularly with themed bedding to match the walls.

Whyisitsodifficult · 06/11/2015 22:08

Our DS's room is a transport theme. He has roads that run all over the walls and ceiling with different vehicles on them. We need to do our other DS's room soon. I agree with the painting the walls and adding stickers and accessories as they grow out of 'themed' rooms so quickly.

Some lovely ideas here! DD's room is an enchanted garden with a green grassy rug, flowery duvet set and curtains with bees, butterfly and toadstool stickers

wannabestressfree · 07/11/2015 06:20

We have boys so....
One has a parkour man jumping on his wall and urban colours to match.
One has a football pitch including curtains, duvet, carpet as grass etc.
One would hiss like golum if you went near his room but you can't win them all :)

For dad's woodland themed room we have gone for wall stickers and a feature wall to go with the accessories. She has a 'grass' rug and green curtains along with the stickers and a woodland lampshade.

For when we decorate next I would love to do a chalkboard wall, she would love it.

EasterRobin · 07/11/2015 21:26

We've gone for lightly coloured walls and were planning to use large wall stickers to make it special. Only problem is there is just too much choice, so I haven't been able to pick which stickers yet. There are some great theme ideas in this thread though - I'm feeling very inspired now!

My daughter's bedroom is small so I wanted to make the most of her space. There is a recessed area in which we fitted a chest of drawers and some shelving above for her books. I then created a bespoke 'open' wardrobe so that it fitted snugly into the space next to the chest by using the wooden parts of an unused canvas wardrobe. She wanted pink walls, but we compromised by having white walls (to create light and space) then simply accessorised with a pink leatherette beanbag and pink heart rug. I would, however, absolutely love to create a 'secret' mural by using glow-in-the-dark paints, so that you wouldn't see the picture properly until the lights had been turned off! That will be my next project :)

Devora · 07/11/2015 23:18

dd's bedroom was a study before she was born - sort of a sandy colour with an olive green feature wall. Rather than repaint, I painted lots and lots of paper butterflies and blu-tacked them to the green wall, with the wings coming slightly loose to get a 3-D effect. It looked great!

We've now moved and her room is white with a load of butterfly wall stickers etc. Nice but dull. I want to do a kind of vintage meadow scheme - I'm thinking creamy custardy walls, with ditsy floral wallpaper stuck into the panels of her white Ikea wardrobe. Still butterfly stickers - but vintage-style ones if I can find them. And a faded green rug (has to be faded!). I'm also going to paint her pink metal bed ivory, and hang a floral canopy over it.

catsofa · 08/11/2015 00:37

My 6 month old son loves looking up at trees, we're going to put a high continuous shelf around his room so we can grow plants up there which will trail down into the room and make a canopy of leaves above his head.

voyager50 · 08/11/2015 12:29

My nephew's room has an amazing mural with bright colours of mountains, rainbows and sky that was painted on his wall by a family friend before he was born - he still loves it now he's almost 6.

cowmop · 08/11/2015 19:50

I'd love to do my son a comic book themed rooms, with plenty of "Pows" etc in primary colours painted on a white background along with a few chalk board paint speech bubbles for him to write his own story.

PurpleThermalsNowItsWinter · 08/11/2015 20:12

Overestimate rather than underestimate how much wallpaper and paint you will need. I will never forget the time I though one roll would cover a wall. DH laughed and headed off for another 4 rolls. Likewise with paint, I'm always going back for another tin.

ButtonMoonLoon · 08/11/2015 23:30

Sparkly lights can really give a room that magical feel.
It's also nice to wallpaper two walls, leaving the other two just painted. This means that you have a nice balance of space for shelving and pictures.
We have glow in the dark stars on my daughters ceiling which she looks at as she goes to sleep.

ThemisA · 09/11/2015 06:38

I am not at all artistic so I paint the room (something I can mange) in whatever colour my child wants and I get my artistic mother to work with my children on the detail.

janeyf1 · 09/11/2015 06:43

We have painted a night theme with a dark blue wall and gold stick on stars, with a yellow/gold wall adjacent. Looks ideal for relaxing our DC and encourage a sleeping mood

barbsbarbs · 09/11/2015 06:57

OK is would paint silver stars on The ceiling and decorate with lights. I would make sure there was room and space to play but would bring in toys that would make them use their imagination.

pockledigg · 09/11/2015 07:13

Buy lots of cheap voille and pin it to the wall-gives it a lovely dream-like quality and a splash of colour.

maryandbuzz1 · 09/11/2015 07:32

Decorating a child's bedroom need not be an expensive treat. We painted clown figures on the wall and used brightly coloured curtains, stickers and storage boxes for a bright cheerful room for our son.

flozza42 · 09/11/2015 07:50

I have recently decorated my teenage daughters bedroom she wanted a glamourous look so we choose a silver metallic damask paper with deep purple and pale pink soft furnishings. She loves it. So important for a child to have input into their own room and how it should look .
