Inspired by the new PAN movie, Valspar has created the PAN Palette - a selection of colours which can bring the magic of Neverland to life in your home. Valspar are keen to hear Mumsnetters' top tips for creating a magical themed bedroom for your children.

Valspar says: "A child's bedroom is somewhere they can let their imagination run wild and decorating their space with a magical theme can help fuel their creativity further. The PAN Palette is filled with enchanting colours from the film so allow your child to be inspired by the pink of the fearless warrior, the red of the pirate that all pirates fear and the teal of the mermaid's lagoon. The best thing is that no matter how messy play time gets, Valspar paint contains a super scrub formula which allows walls to be wiped down and scrubbed clean without chipping or compromising the colour."

So, how would you create an enchanted bedroom for your child? Would you paint the night sky on the ceiling? Perhaps you would turn the walls into a chalkboard or add a touch of sparkle with paint glitter? Or maybe you would upcycle furniture to give it a magical new look? Perhaps you've already done it, in which case we'd love to see your pictures too.

Whatever the theme, Valspar would love to hear your tips!

Everyone who adds a comment to this thread will be entered into a prize draw where one winner will receive a £300 Love2Shop voucher.

Thanks and good luck,

If you are not very artistic (like me) there are fabulous wall stickers that are not expensive. The upside to this, is that as their tastes change, stickers can be peeled off & a change is much easier than if you have painted a design on the walls

glenka · 09/11/2015 07:55

Wall stickers are a brilliant way to transform a room because you can easily change them when you want a new theme for their room.

devito92 · 09/11/2015 08:03

I made my sons room into a spaceship theme

My Great Niece Olivia is Disney Princess mad, her favourite is Ariel from the Little Mermaid. Her Mum is very artistic & has painted a mural which covers the whole of one wall in Olivia's bedroom with all the characters from the film. She has also painted characters on her bedroom furniture which was just plain white but now looks absolutely amazing.

phillie1 · 09/11/2015 08:50

murals painted on the wall, and then Disney princess bed canopy

Let each child choose a theme as long as it not scary monsters. Choose duvet covers and accessories to reflect the theme.

funkyfish586 · 09/11/2015 09:00

I created a cosy corner in my daughters room with drapes, huge cushions & fairy lights. Its a lovely calm space she can read & relax :)

Ganne1 · 09/11/2015 09:03

Children are happiest when you let them choose the wallpaper, et cetera (nightlights with projected images help though).

The only problem is that they keep wanting to change the style every year!

When we moved into our new house 3 years ago the kids bedrooms were the only ones we made over before we moved in - wanted them to feel excited and at home from day one. We let them choose their themes so it really felt like their space. My son went for 'space' - we papered just the chimney breast in a galaxy paper and got a matching lightshade. Got some really cool glow in the dark planet stickers and set these all up on the ceiling. I also had a toy box painted for him by an amazing local lady - gave her a sample of the wallpaper and she created it to match exactly, with a few extra touches of her own (aliens peeping out etc). Also bought him two different sets of space/alien bedding. Daughters was very similar, except ballet themed. Chimney breast papered in pink with white ballet shoes and the local lady painted her toy box with Angelina Ballerina. I got some inexpensive ballet canvas prints to put on her walls and even hung her first ballet shoes up on the wall with a pice of ribbon, along with some photos of her in the shows she's done. So pretty!

When we decorated DS1 room we let him choose the paint, furniture and decorations so the room was how he wanted it. He chose blue and red paint so we did 3 walls blue and one red, then he chose some white furniture from Ikea and a really nice set of curtains, cushions and rugs from next. It looked amazing when it was finished and certainly better than we would of chosen, not bad for a 6 year old.

I think with a magical theme and ( some space you could really go to town a raised bed with a den underneath ( with lots of soft cushions), wardrobes with drawers inside, my dad's would love a tulle canopy ( possibly with butterflies added as a magical twist).

Natasha7 · 09/11/2015 09:41

We painted sky and clouds on the ceiling and rolling hills on the walls using emulsion paint. Then we put few stickers of animals. Very easy.

suzyq50 · 09/11/2015 09:58

I've used stick on stencils to decorate the walls as my painting skills isn't great. Also I've used those glow in the dark stars & planets on the walls & ceiling.

seeingdouble2 · 09/11/2015 10:06

Plenty of under bed storage. Plus each time a child gets a new one make it clear you have to take one away so we don't fall over and hurt our self's.

beckyinman · 09/11/2015 10:11

We use accessories and things like fabric to create things like Princess drapes, or a tent in the desert, that means when they change their mind you don't need to totally repaint/ wallpaper the room

janeoho · 09/11/2015 10:13

I have a little girl so we decided to make her room into a princess room. A few simple things transform a room such as a canopy hanging down from the ceiling above her bed with pink netting, only a fiver! a mini pink chandelier also only a fiver. Every thing is shades of pink and she has lovely sparkly ballerina photos on the wall so the little touches go a long way! I imagine if I had a boy we would have transformed a boys room into a pirate theme.

beeelaine · 09/11/2015 10:15

i am rubbish at art, but i found out how to get round that, and painted murals on the wall of our sons room in the house we lived in when he was about 6. I hired a projector and if you pick the work of art you want, you then trace with marker pen onto see through plastic sheets and then you put them on the projector and it beams onto the wall and you can adjust the size you want onto the wall and you have your outlines to pencil and then you paint in the details and use a thick black pen to outline after its dried - I did this with Thomas the Tank Engine and friends. To our son it was "enchanted" as it was his obsession! He used to speak in his sleep...."thomas and percy..." so sweet!

tubbyj · 09/11/2015 10:22

Plain walls, then use the duvet cover, curtains, light shades and pictures/posters to hang up make it easy to switch around later when there taste changes.

piggyliggy2015 · 09/11/2015 10:35

Lots of bright colours are a definite. Wall stickers are also great as they can easily be changed and you don't need to be artistic to use them! I love the idea of adding special glitter to paint as well, for that added magical touch.

liamell · 09/11/2015 10:42

Wall stickers have always been the way forward for us, its so easy then to roll with the changes and as your child is growing into a different phase, with different likes, it is easily changed (and very cost effective)

shawbarbara · 09/11/2015 10:44

I like to get the children involved - I show them pictures in magazines /TV shows and ask what they would like to do!
Messy play - testers and imagination is the name of the game. I also rate pound shops/other cheap shops for their wall art/stickers. N need to spend a fortune and that way it can be changed as the child develops

gamerwidow · 09/11/2015 10:47

Wall stickers are great you can use a neutral base and then add as much colour as you like through stickers. They're also easy to remove and replace when your DC grow out of them.
I let DD choose things like curtains and bed linen, it does mean it all looks a bit tacky and princessy but she loves it and that's more important than "tasteful" decor

strikingstarlet · 09/11/2015 10:47

We have done just that with our 4 year old daughters room. I think fairy lighting makes everything look more magical so my daughter has a tree lamp with a fairy light at the end of each branch which gives her room a very magical feel. We bought a green long pile rug (very cheap) to look like grass and coloured tissue Pom poms hanging from the ceiling at different levels to look like coloured clouds! Wall stickers help too and we chose a tree that curves round the corner of the room and also across the ceilings, we also added owls and flowers to make it feel like woodland. She has a canopy hanging over her bed which she loves and goes between the pretending she is a Royal princess to camping out in the enchanted woodland! We upcycled old furniture and couldn't get over the difference after painting and giving a destrested effect and also adding new handles.

None of the above was expensive and with the help of bargain shops, eBay and a little hard work her room looks amazing and somewhere she really enjoys spending time and sleeping in!!

hiddenmichelle · 09/11/2015 11:01

Fairy lights, fairy lights, fairy lights!!!!!

pixelwife · 09/11/2015 11:15

Embrace your theme. My son has an Avengers room with a wall mural across one complete wall and then Avengers canvases plus acrylic artwork which says Boom and Kapow on the other walls. We've matched up his duvets (bunk beds) and accessories so everything is Avengers. I'm just dreading when he says he's into something else as that's going to be a big job re-theming everything!
