Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

I get lectured about how much food gets chucked so they want a WORM farm using our food waste. I've no idea what they've got planned for the poor worms.

We have brought up our twin boys to understand why we recycle and look after our environment. They are now 6 years old and help sort out the recycling, turn of lights, taps when washing hands/teeth and they help me sort out their toys for the charity shop where we normally end up buying some more toys from their. I think its great that people are becoming more green and hopefully give the next generation a nicer planet to live on.

They'd love it if we grew our own veg & even kept chickens! Definitely no to chickens & I don't have enough space for a veg plot so we've compromised on herbs in pots!

I am always being told off for leaving lights on by my son. Before the heating goes on for the winter, we are going to turn the thermostat down by a degree or two.

Dolallytats · 08/10/2015 19:32

Mine aren't very good at green issues. DS leaves a trail of lights on everywhere he goes (as does DH). We don't recycle because we have communal bins and there are lots of other residents that just shove normal waste in them so they can no longer be recycled. I hate that, but it alo means DS doesn't have much of a idea about recycling.

sallyst123 · 08/10/2015 19:53

My 3 are fantastic at recycling.
& using up all bits of rubbish into craft projects.
Also they love planting & growing there own fruit & veg. We had tomatoes from my dd1, green beans from my dd2 & lovely potatoes from my ds this year.
(It also got them to eat veg which is always a bonus)

mumpetuk1 · 08/10/2015 19:54

They pester me about food waste, it's the only thing I do not recycle. Makes the house smell and attracts the flies int he summer!

mumpetuk1 · 08/10/2015 19:55

Many years ago when my mum used to drive us to school, my sister fell out of the moving car TWICE! she was lucky both times..we joke that now that we where trying to get rid of her on the school run!

mrsglowglow · 08/10/2015 20:18

My 10 year old daughter doesn't like to throw anything away and is constantly coming up with ideas of how to reuse rubbish. Examples; plastic milk bottles cut up to make bird feeders - We had at one time 5 hanging off our trees in the garden! Cardboard boxes of all sizes being used to make houses and hotels for our cat - even tiny ones are saved to make chimneys and wardrobes. Plastic bags taped together to make trousers and t shirts for her and her brother. Newspapers shredded to make bedding and also pictures and headings cut out and used for various schoolwork. Also paper mache is a big thing for her and she has made some really cool sculptures. However we just do not have room to keep everything so our garage has become a recycling station and I admit when she's not around I do thin the piles out and fill up the recycling bin. I love her creativeness and ability to see the potential in what is really rubbish. We recently bought some lunch bags from a charity that were all made out of recycled juice cartons in the Philippines that she spotted.

funkyfreks · 08/10/2015 20:20

When We are off out shopping they always remind me to take our own carrier bags all 3 of mine.

zatuns · 08/10/2015 20:22

As a family we are pretty good at recycling the paper, card and plastics. But my kids seem to think its not enough just to recycle the plastic into a wheelie bin but to construct some monstrosity in the living room for weeks on ends.

lucyrobinson · 08/10/2015 20:32

My kiddies are both good especially about recycling. They haven't got the hang of turning the tap off while cleaning their teeth. Or turning off the lights when they aren't in the room. x

toodles60 · 08/10/2015 20:36

My children are always pushing me to use my recycle bins and we made a special child recycle bin for them. Bright pink with pictures of cans and bottles they've drawn themselves on the outside. Whenever i'm cooking they remeind me to put empty cans etc in the recycle bin

jayz268 · 08/10/2015 20:44

They pester about collecting aluminium foil

fazkin · 08/10/2015 20:57

Walking instead of taking the car. My daughters constantly nagging me

barker99 · 08/10/2015 21:41

I think it's me who pesters my daughter to not waste water, paper etc.

embabes7 · 08/10/2015 22:07

My son is only two, but if there's recycling on the side (that looks like normal rubbish to him) he always says ''bin Mummy'' so we take it to the recycling bags together - I think i can make him know this from early doors! :)

baconbap · 08/10/2015 22:15

buy organic because they recognise the symbols

rocketriffs · 08/10/2015 22:22

I am my 5yr olds personal recycle bin. He gives it all to me. Paper wrappers. plastic bottles etc, which is a good thing really. He never throws away his rubbish or litters anywhere. He doesn't actually pester me to be green, but he is aware that different bins are for different materials, but its easier to hand them to Mum, Dad or big sister.

robyn297 · 08/10/2015 22:25

My son loves recycling, but doesn't fully understand the concept, so tries to recycle everything. He loves Fridays when the recycling men come and collect and will happily sit by the window waiting for them, gives me a half hour to get on with the housework ;-)

dandanrawlings · 08/10/2015 22:33

Mine make sure that I recycle everything, to the point where they end up doing it myself

ser01 · 08/10/2015 22:39

everything, their schools hammer it into them and if you dont do it i get chastised and told im so naughty and unthoughtful

cookinmummy · 08/10/2015 22:48

We are pretty green already, plus my OH works in Environmental services. So we recycle, use cloth nappies, walk & cycle a lot etc. So I think our kids have grown up seeing that caring for the environment is the norm. So we escape the pestering......however I know when we visit the grandparents the kids do like to nag them quite a bit - particularly correctly recycling all their waste! Our poor parents lol x

JWalker23 · 08/10/2015 22:53

If it can be recycled or which box to go in; so confusing lol

lindsey3uk · 08/10/2015 23:08

I am always being told off for not recycling 'properly' my DD is very hot on recycling correctly.
