Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Errrr....I'm the one that is constantly reminding them to turn the taps and lights off. I seem to spend my days following a trail of destruction..I'm pretty much Wonder woman in my house!

pockledigg · 28/09/2015 05:49

Flaming composting. I've got so many 'bins' there's no room in the kitchen for us!

createbeauty · 28/09/2015 07:57

My son really likes to put rubbish where it belongs and likes to be lifted to put recycling in the big blue bin. It makes him feel like a big kid and he loves to feel like he's helping.

Quills · 28/09/2015 08:07

Not leaving the tap running is a real bugbear of DD1's, as well as recycling as much as possible - usually into an astounding myriad of arts and crafts!

phillie1 · 28/09/2015 09:10

It's always me having to remind them

castleton · 28/09/2015 09:35

Not taking plastic carrier bags from shops, but taking the hessian bags I have and using them instead

lizd31 · 28/09/2015 09:56

Olivia's too young to know about recycling but she loves playing in her GGs garden & helping too. She loves the solar lights in the fairy garden I created for her. She's very good at putting her water & juice bottles in the little bin we have in the kitchen ready for recycling though. As she gets older we'll all teach her how to make the world a greener place.

glennamy · 28/09/2015 10:19

DD loves recycling and anything that is not collected by the refuse collectors we take to the recycling centre...

southernsun · 28/09/2015 10:54

We have 2 bins in the kitchen one for normal rubbish and one for recycling and if we put something in the wrong bin by accident our DS is quick to let us know and ask us to put it in the right one.

kbonna1 · 28/09/2015 11:18

advise them to use the right bin

angela25rose · 28/09/2015 11:29

My dc is always going on about remembering the shopping bags so we don't have to waste new ones!

julieef · 28/09/2015 11:30

it is the other way around we tell them what needs recycling and my hubby has even gone into the bathroom bin and taken out recycling items that they have put in there

helly27 · 28/09/2015 11:35

My daughter reminds me to turn the tap of between brushes of my teeth

hannonle · 28/09/2015 11:58

I'm the one pestering them, esp about wasting water and food!

gamerwidow · 28/09/2015 12:05

DD is too young to be aware of green issues yet but I try to model good behaviour such as recycling cans and food waste and making sure I always take a shopping bag out with me.

Cambam2010 · 28/09/2015 12:51

MY DS(5) saves water. He insists that I have a bath with him and also refuses to flush the toilet.

farhanac · 28/09/2015 12:57

Collecting random objects from the pavement to take home for recycling

andy07 · 28/09/2015 12:59

Both my youngest always tell us and the older children especially their old brother to remember to put their rubbish in the recycling bag. My youngest daughter always says "i dont want to have to grow up walking in your rubbish". I think that says it all

Anononooo · 28/09/2015 13:11

turning off lights when they are not needed - which I do like to do but DP never does. Lights are a battleground in our home.

bridge16 · 28/09/2015 13:15

Both of mine are very big on recycling and always reminding me of what does NOT go in the bin! I have been made on numerous occasions to dig things out of the bin that could and should be recycled!

strawberrisc · 28/09/2015 13:35

My daughter is really into a scheme that recycles plastic bottle lids. Lids are made from a different polymer to the bottles themselves and so she makes me collect them all and they go to the local hospital. They recycle them and when they have a certain amount of money it funds wheelchairs for patients.

She pesters me to unscrew bottle tops from any bottles we find on the floor when we are out walking. I look like a very strange individual!

CMOTDibbler · 28/09/2015 13:36

DS is strict on recycling

voyager50 · 28/09/2015 13:58

I am always the one that does the reminding about the small things like putting the toilet roll cardboard in the recycling not the bathroom bin!

Cherrybellyboo · 28/09/2015 14:31

We have 2 bins, and dd is always asking which one things go in. She now knows most things that go in the recycling.
She also loves to point out how younger dd is wearing her old clothes and loves to make sure her old clothes go to her.

nemno · 28/09/2015 16:09

After clearing out my deceased ILs house we gained several sacks of coal. Rather than burn it in our fireplace (usually logburner) my son thinks it should be reburied.

He is diligent about all the usual efforts eg compost, recycling, walking or cycling and struggles with the idea he should go vegetarian. We do eat less meat than before now.
