Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Mine love to walk to school so the car is a no go! The big thing at the moment is recycling, my daughter has appointed herself Chief Executive of Waste disposal & recycling (her title not mine!)

Ganne1 · 27/09/2015 18:51

Getting the kids to eat cabbage, broccoli, or whatever, was no problem! But we had no chance getting Marc to eat carrots or sweet potatoes. So it wasn't greens he wouldn't eat, but oranges! Er, actually he would oranges.

I am forever being reminded to switch the light off when I leave the room by my son and when I sorted my wardrobe last week and was about to throw clothes in the bin he bagged them up ready for the charity shop!

rainbowvalley · 27/09/2015 19:05

Collecting containers which can be recycled in the form of art at school.

Happyjad · 27/09/2015 19:09

Giving old clothes to the charity shops, buying green goods and environmental friendly goods!

shawbarbara · 27/09/2015 19:13

They pester me about doing enough re-cycling - but funny I seem to be the only one that sorts the rubbish out for the green bin and I'm the only one that puts it out!!!!

ThemisA · 27/09/2015 19:25

I am not allowed to throw anything out that can be recycled, including tiny pieces of foil.

Both my children are careful to turn lights off and don't waste water. We are lucky enough to have solar panels and we all try to recharge batteries, use the washing machine etc when the sun is out.

I am a vegetarian and my son has recently given up meat.

We grow quite a lot of vegetables in the summer.

Sallyannlloydjones · 27/09/2015 19:27

Recycling and putting out food for the birds such as left over bread.

BlackCatSleeps · 27/09/2015 20:03

My kids much prefer to go anywhere by walking or scooting rather than in the car. We usually do the school run by walking but occasionally I need to drive if I need to go elsewhere but then they nag me about car fumes!!

Marg2k8 · 27/09/2015 20:07

My children are older now, but they always used to want to walk to school, even if I had an important appointment that I had to get to immediately after the school run.

WarmHugs · 27/09/2015 20:08

My DC are always reminding me to turn the tap off when I brush my teeth!

I did teach them that, but often forget myself!

shivbrown · 27/09/2015 20:28

My son always tells me not to bin yogurt pots etc as wants them for his school, No now we bring all our yogurt pots for the children in younger years to make things x

mave · 27/09/2015 20:59

I'm always reminding them to recycle unfortunately!

arat · 27/09/2015 21:04

My kids are pretty good on being green - they often remind me to switch off lights, TV etc and are always putting me right on what can/can't be recycled!

vixxx666 · 27/09/2015 21:08

They get fed up of me telling them to turn their light off when they leave a room, but how am I supposed to teach them when their dad doesn't do it either?! haha

Shiraznowplease · 27/09/2015 21:24

My dc have learned about recycling in school. They regularly check that mummy and daddy are putting items in the right bins. They are obsessed with walking to school (even in bad weather) so they aren't responsible for melting ice and homeless polar bears/ penguins

pfcpompeysarah · 27/09/2015 21:32

My son is great when it comes to recycling and is often the one to remind me to put something originally placed in the bin in the recycling bag instead.. however, when it comes to wasting electricity he could write the book on it.. lights on here there and everywhere, games consoles and tv's plus never turning off charged items once they are fully done.. makes me mad!

bla4bla · 27/09/2015 21:33

I get my children to put the recycling into the outside bins and they are pretty good at sorting through their own lunchboxes, taking out rubbish and recycling.

beckyinman · 27/09/2015 21:33

I love a long bath but they tell me to have a shower!

compy99 · 27/09/2015 21:35

our little chap likes to gather up all the cardboard rolls from kitchen roll and loo rolls to make "creations" - sometimes when they are still being used!

oliviajones · 27/09/2015 21:36

My kids are full of energy and going for walks or cycles with them instead of using the car is great for the environment, and tires them out!

JessePinkman3 · 27/09/2015 21:47

My daughter has done various school projects on recycling. As a result she didn't want any packaging in her lunchbox so now she has little Tupperware boxes for each thing

lhlee62 · 27/09/2015 21:58

My daughter keeps telling me only naughty people drop rubbish. I think I taught her too well as she wants to pick up all the rubbish that people have dropped.

Elizasmum02 · 27/09/2015 23:24

My daughter is obsessed with recycling, has been since she learnt about it at nursery. she scrutinises everything i put in the bin !

LJH79 · 28/09/2015 02:54

My daughter is elected as an eco warrior at her school and makes us park further from the school to walk further and use less petrol. She also tells me off for leaving a tap running even when just filling the sink!!
