Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

As my children are still young they don't know much about being green, although they do understand littering and will moan/chat for a fair few minutes if they spot any litter or dog poo lying around as they know it's completely unacceptable.

my dgs nags me not to throw old clothes away but either send to the charity shop or sell them

TrollTheRespawnJeremy · 28/09/2015 16:46

Our hoarding is looking worse than ever as DD is adamant that everything should be recycled or charity shopped.

As DP works with the car, this means a couple of bags at a time to the charity shop.... I predict that by 2018 I might be able to get back into my spare room sigh

tamalyn1 · 28/09/2015 18:54

my daughter always pesters me to recyle everything, the peelings go in one bin, the plastic in another, the cardboard in another and all old clothing has to be taken to charity. she checks in every week before the binman comes to collect incase i put them in the wrong box, wo betide if i did ha ha

mumtowoo1 · 28/09/2015 19:34

my girls always check that my husband and I have put the right items in recycling bag/black bags

alsproject · 28/09/2015 19:46

My son likes to be the one who sorts out the recycling. So much in fact that he almost threw away food once just so he could recycle the packaging

Sockattack · 28/09/2015 20:16

My son earns pocket money by sorting out the recycling. He knows what goes where.

EldonAve · 28/09/2015 20:38

I get hassle if I leave the tap running while brushing my teeth

feefeegabor · 28/09/2015 20:46

My daughter is such a nag! If I throw so much as a receipt in the bin, she makes me remove it and put it into the recycling bin!

Cintacmrs123 · 28/09/2015 20:59

recycling - we have two bins one for recycling and one for rubbish. She hasn't figured out not everything can be recycled so every time I go to the "normal bin" I have to explain myself.

ottothedog · 28/09/2015 21:35

Sorry. Me and dh are far far more eco than my kids, who appear to have learned nothing at all at school about it and moan when we make them recycle. The only thing I can think of is that they use rechargeable xbox controllers

Cailin7 · 28/09/2015 22:30

My DS was in the school green team at primary school, and was always coming home with ideas. Now he is in his teens, I think he must have completely forgotten all he learned as I am the one constantly having to put out lights and unplug chargers etc

sweir1 · 28/09/2015 22:54

my son is obsessed with the bin man dropping bits on the road

Raahh · 28/09/2015 22:59

Mine are pretty good at sorting the recycling- but have to be reminded to put it in the bins.

DD2 (5) is very good at reminding me to take carrier bags to the shops though. She finds the idea of paying for them rude it eats into the treats budget. GrinSo, it is in her best interests to remind me. Every penny counts, as they say!

fm201069 · 28/09/2015 23:02

mine are terrible when it comes to turning off lights. They're even worse than me lol!

buckley1983 · 28/09/2015 23:52

My brother has very helpfully taught my 2 year old the rhyme 'If it's yellow, let it mellow - if it's brown, flush it down' - it has caught on in a big way & while it does make me roll my eyes, he finds it hilarious & it does fit in well with the recent potty/toilet training & good practice re: saving water!!

ThomasRichard · 29/09/2015 00:12

DS (5) watched a video about aeroplanes today and informed me this evening that we can only fly on Dreamliners because 'they are good for the environment' Hmm

blibblobblub · 29/09/2015 03:38

DD says "mum, you know not to buy Unilever stuff right, considering the disastrous impact that their actions had in India - with the mercury poisoning and stuff? Like, don't you think it's a bit rich them trying to come across all green now?"

(She doesn't really, because she is a baby and can't talk. But I'd hope one day she might care about that kind of thing.)

finleypop · 29/09/2015 09:11

My son is very vigilant about the recycling & has made it his job to make sure it is done correctly. He is also very keen to donate his unwanted toys & clothes to places that can make good use of them

Lovewhereilive · 29/09/2015 09:18

It's me pestering them about recycling, one day it will be automatic behaviour, I hope! They are good at composting the food, but don't pester me about anything about it as I am quite good at it already.

krisskross · 29/09/2015 09:46

My 8 year old DS is obsessed with turning lights off to save power. Also very hot on composting everything possible.

jandoc · 29/09/2015 12:49

always about the milk cartons and beans tins

janeoho · 29/09/2015 13:36

My little one loves to see things grow and she is always interested in where our food comes from. So we grew some peas, tomatoes and carrots in the garden so she could see the processes. She actually ate them and now eats her veg. We want to do more things like this so we can have our organic food and not have so much waste and packaging in our house.

katyk81 · 29/09/2015 13:57

My 7 year old son is great at making sure things go in the right bin but is fairly clueless about anything else without being reminded- mostly because he goes off at a tangent all the time. This morning he said he was cold and could he put the fire on- fortunately his 4 year old sister got there before me and told him to put his jumper on instead. I regularly hear her telling him to turn off lights, taps etc- normally in a very self righteous tone of voice it has to be said!

Lulabellx1 · 29/09/2015 14:15

Recycling. They are hot on recycling at school.... much better than we are at home Blush.
