Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

I am 'encouraged' by DC's to walk rather than drive and for us all to go on bike rides if it's sunny.

Taking the recycling out to the correct bin

CointreauVersial · 29/09/2015 16:34

My DCs are pretty good at remembering to put stuff in the recycling bin, but i wasn't the other day to find a lump of chewing gum at the bottom of the bin.

All credit to them - they came up with all sorts of creative uses for recycled chewing gum!

CointreauVersial · 29/09/2015 16:35

Wasn't IMPRESSED the other day...

badgermum · 29/09/2015 16:54

My son loves recycling he goes to great lengths to fill up our recycling bag behind the kitchen door and then takes it out to sort it into bins and he gets most annoyed if some lazy person has put something recyclable into the rubbish bin, he also nags us about collecting rainwater into butts to water the garden with and he's only nine years old!!

sharond101 · 29/09/2015 17:49

I recycle but if Iam rushing around I will put it in the normal bin which my 3 year old scolds me for.

Kathderoet · 29/09/2015 18:16

Always the recycling and the food bin, my youngest scrapes plates into the food bin before I do the dishes and they are all good with recycling, it gets drummed into them at school and they have all been on the eco committee ar one point or another so they naturally switch off lights and save water.

cagsd · 29/09/2015 18:19

Without fail, they nag me about leaving the tap running when I brush my teeth! I think they must have learned in school about water waste and how it's best to turn it off, as they always have a go at me!

freefan · 29/09/2015 19:59

My daughter took part in a litter pick with the school and insisted on getting bought her own picker upper, which she now takes to the park with her and takes great pride in getting us to make it cleaner, she has even got her friend doing it too now

Princessxo · 29/09/2015 21:06

Honestly, although DS1 is getting pretty good, he's still not at the stage where he has to remind me to do things haha.

Hopezibah · 29/09/2015 21:19

wastage especially food wastage - we are generally very good so they are shocked if I do ever have to throw anything out!

G1veMeStrength · 29/09/2015 21:54

DD is pretty keen on 'things that are eco' and they are both happy to wear charity shop clothes. Their jobs include doing the recycling which they only moan about sometimes ;)

Maiyakat · 29/09/2015 21:57

DD (3) always wants to pick litter up when we're out - very commendable, not always the safest thing to do though! She also makes sure I sort the rubbish for recycling properly.

del2929 · 29/09/2015 22:54

my little one is a recycaholic. she will save sweetie wrappers and boxes 'just incase we need them for school homework'

imrankhanpost · 30/09/2015 07:44

Every single newspaper, milk carton are added to recycling. There is a bag in the house which always monitored and by clockwork everyday a search is made in 4 bins to check if anything is not binned accidental rather than recyled.

Lariflete · 30/09/2015 09:33

DD has just started school (and has just turned 4).
Despite the fact that we have recycled and walked most places within walking distance since before she was born, now that her teacher has talked to them about it I am being constantly nagged about what can go in the recycling and walking to / from school!
I've got a feeling I am going to hate her teacher by the end of the year Grin

funkyfish586 · 30/09/2015 15:32

My children get really upset when they realise they have put general waste in the recycling by mistake. I think the school teach them so many good habits.

Wjjkl · 30/09/2015 15:45

We have a compost heap and a veggie patch - DS likes to help to put the vegetable waste in the compost and in the spring, dig over the veg patch using last year's compost.. Leading to new veggies and more composting etc etc..! A virtuous circle!

gazzalw · 30/09/2015 18:59

Using the food waste recycling bin. We are pretty much good Wombles on everything recycling-related BUT really truly detest the whole concept of recycling food waste (not the stuff that can be put in the garden compost bin though!), particularly during the summer months when the bin seems to always be full of maggots!

kaymay12 · 30/09/2015 22:29

My daughter is devoted to bees, so I am always reminded to plant plants and flowers for them and not to use any chemicals in my garden

GetKnitted · 30/09/2015 23:29

They pester me about recycling. I pester them about the lights.

Memyselfandthatotherperson · 01/10/2015 08:07

My ds is a backseat driver - but encouraging me to drive more efficiently

supermariossister · 01/10/2015 11:46

Ds has a real thing about recycling whereas i often put things in the wrong box so he moves them back. he also keeps anything and everything that he could "make into something else" so we have lots of boxes and tubes milling about the place ready for the perfect occasion

ArthurChristmas · 01/10/2015 15:46

Great to read all the enthusiasm from our children! DD aged 9 is pretty much an expert on recycling, lights, water, walking to school, saving bugs, eating everything on her plate, not expecting foods all year round. A recent sewer problem at home has also given a good visual reminder of what not to put down the toilet (not our waste I'd like to add).

Just need to start getting the 4 year old to deliver...............

sofieellis · 01/10/2015 19:14

I've brought them up to be quite aware of recycling etc, so it's second nature to them. They do forget when it comes to unplugging their electrical stuff though.

DS3 is especially keen and refuses to let me remove any plants from the garden in case the bees might want them!
