Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

Not allowed to throw out any wrapping paper that she can use to make collages!

clam77 · 06/10/2015 19:24

My 10 year old DD always hovers over me while I'm brushing my teeth to ensure that I turn the tap off whilst brushing....and if I forget I get the wasting water talk!

sootyo · 06/10/2015 19:32

Recycling papers

SirNiallDementia · 06/10/2015 20:52

DS is on the school Eco Council which is obviously great but OMG he takes his work home with him!

The things he tells me off most for are leaving lights on, not putting everything in the recycling, leaving the water running when I brush my teeth and using the car when we could walk.

cheryl100 · 06/10/2015 21:02

I pester my son - mainly to turn off all his electronic equipment!

Kangakate · 06/10/2015 21:06

My DC's are always moaning at us to recycle everything, well everything they can't use to make something

Gill81uk · 06/10/2015 22:00

My two are a bit young but they both love help putting the recycling in the bins, and always ask "is this rubbish or is it recycling?" before they put it in the bin.

matphil · 06/10/2015 22:21

Mine don't pester me yet I'm the one who pesters them as they don't really understand about it all yet.

sjl19 · 07/10/2015 08:13

My son loves rubbish trucks and is very interested in putting things in the bin! He loves to put things in the recycling bins one at a time! We turn it into a game.

NoisyOyster · 07/10/2015 09:52

My DC learnt at nursery (!) about the importance of rinsing out cans / bottles properly before putting them in the recycle bin. I admit I usually forget to lazy

So it's interesting to get told off by a child reminding me to now do it properly! Grin

emily13 · 07/10/2015 13:00

Yes I get told off if I put even the tiniest bit of paper in the normal rubbish bin.

Squina1 · 07/10/2015 15:22

My son is very passionate about being green. In fact he has even joined an eco club at school. He often tells my DH off if he ever drops litter, and I am constantly getting nagged to turn all the lights off.

RUTHGGROVER · 07/10/2015 16:02

Being greener is a daily thing here. It's a habit you get into. Recently due to a problem we had to fill a washing up bowl using the shower! I was shocked how long it took to fill it and I was sure it was longer than I actually stand in the shower. So we could only imagine how much water for a bath ! So, a bath is a rare luxury, it's showers. A tap should never be running. You use only what you need.
We don't ever have food waste. Buying and cooking just what we need and always finding a use for leftovers.. my grandson is so into bubble and squeak we now have to make leftovers ! EVERYTHING is recycled. No excuses.
We live opposite the beach and at weekends we take sacks down there to pick up rubbish and litter, it's so distressing seeing a seabird with plastic wrapped around it.
We walk where we can and cycle. We buy from local shops, rather than supermarkets. They buy local too so food miles are reduced.
So many other ways we now take for granted ! Not leaving lights on when not in the room and not leaving things on standby overnight. I think it is great the way children are taught in schools now ... it's official if it's taught in a school and it isn't just Grandma saying it's how it should be done ! They will happily tell you 'If it's yellow, let it mellow, if it's brown, flush it down !

sarah3875 · 07/10/2015 17:07

My boys are very good about recycling and are more than happy to walk/run around rather than get the car. They are terrible at turning out lights however!

TheSpottedZebra · 07/10/2015 17:10

My 2 are very keen on recycling and putting all food waste into the 'green bin'.
DD is also very enthusiastic about the plastic bag law change, and ensures that i have reusable bags in my handbag.

purpleluvbug · 07/10/2015 18:18

My DD is always moaning at me for not washing and squashing. I always just put the things in the recycle box. She follows me around and washes and squashes, lol. Naughty mummy.

balloon66 · 07/10/2015 19:40

they love sorting out the recycling- although it all gets played with first!

cluckyhen · 07/10/2015 22:07

Flushing the loos and saving the bath water!! It's all very well but DS insists on leaving his poos in the loo

whitbyranger · 08/10/2015 06:20

Forgetting to take the longlife bags to the supermarket.

timmmers · 08/10/2015 08:21

Not recycling every last piece of wrapping and paper into the recycle bin. I just throw small bits in the normal bin because it's a chore to keep it all separate when you're busy.

elvisthehamster · 08/10/2015 11:06

My three are pretty good at reminding me and DH to be more green, they definitely get encouraged and taught at school. They like sorting the recycling out and know about turning off the water taps whilst brushing teeth.
They always walk or scoot to school even in bad weather.
I would say they are a lot more aware than I was at school age.

sweetnuttydogs · 08/10/2015 11:41

Usually its my girls telling daddy off for not putting thing in the recycle bin :)

Hollietabeta1 · 08/10/2015 13:48

My eldest is fascinated by recycling symbols on packaging and frequently checks what I'm putting in general waste to make sure i haven't missed something!

MichelleMumsnet · 08/10/2015 13:58

My dc pester me to take the recycling out. They for some reason love putting the correct rubbish in the correct bins.
