Unilever have asked us to find out what Mumsnetters’ DCs pester them about to make the world a greener place.

Here’s what Unilever say, “At Unilever, we believe there has never been a better time to create a better future for our children; a world where everyone has enough food to eat and no child goes to bed hungry; where everybody can enjoy life today while protecting the planet for future generations.

“If we all work together to take small actions every day that make a real difference, we can build a world where everyone lives well and lives sustainably.

“We think that children can help us see the possibilities for a bright future – with an optimistic viewpoint that says ‘why not’, the younger generation open our eyes to new, positive ways of living. But we know Mumsnetters’ are the experts…so we’d like to know what you think.”

We know that children are now being taught more about being environmentally friendly at school than perhaps the majority of us were. So, what are the things which your DCs pester you about when it comes to making the world a greener place? Perhaps it’s about splitting out all the recycling properly? Maybe they’ve decided to become a vegetarian and are convincing all of you to join them too? Or do they want to get their hands stuck in and have been hassling you about getting involved in some conservation volunteering? Whatever it is, we’d love to hear it!

Everyone who posts their tips on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Thanks and good luck,
MNHQ

My DS is only 3 but already when the junk mail / takeaway leaflets etc come through the door he tells me to put it in the 'cycling bin' !

angiehoggett · 01/10/2015 23:33

pestering me for not washing out the tins and bottles

marymanc · 02/10/2015 12:35

I am usually pestering my DC for not wasting water, food and for recycling. They are very good accepting second hand clothes and toys.

CheeseEMouse · 02/10/2015 16:10

My toddler loves playing with light switches, so you can guarantee if one is on she will want to turn it off! She's also utterly obsessed with the tap which is perhaps less eco friendly! She will learn I'm sure.

Actually, I am really super keen on teaching my DDs the importance of recycling! They love to help stack up the newspapers and tip them into the blue bin. It's the DH who's rubbish - so my DDs make sure they remind HIM not to put recyleable things in the rubbish bin - I've taught them well!! Smile

My DS always insists that I turn off appliances that we aren't using or we have finished with. Wish I could teach his sister to be more like him!

Firewall · 02/10/2015 23:19

Mine is always reminding people to recycle all sorts of packaging and to put them in the correct boxes!

FPATEL · 03/10/2015 07:29

My eldest of very good at turning taps off w whilst brushing teeth, and will tell her younger sister off if she is wasting water

DrSausagedog · 03/10/2015 08:16

DD has got very good at reminding us to switch off lights when we leave rooms. At times she gets a bit over zealous and we end up fumbling around in the dark for the light switch!

She also reminds me to take the bottles to the bottle bank.

Catsgowoof · 03/10/2015 09:38

we have a mixture of disposable and reusable nappies for the baby and my oldest always insists on a reusable (may be influenced by cute designs ??)

Sorting out the recycling

melmoo · 03/10/2015 21:23

Both children are great about not buying things that aren't needed. Both are on it with not wasting food and segragating rubbish for recycling. My daughter will walk anywhere - but my son would rather we drove. Both swear they are completely environmentally friendly.
Nobody in the house seems capable of turning off lights.

Eva50 · 03/10/2015 21:27

Ds3 (9) is on the Eco committee at school so he organises all the recycling at home. His brothers are also pretty good. We didn't know anything about recycling when we were children except giving the jam jars to the rag and bone man for a few pence but it's what they're taught these days.

happysouls · 04/10/2015 12:12

I am the driving force behind everything green, I do absolutely everything I can. Despite steering my son in all the right directions, I doubt that he could care less. Sigh.

Lydia30 · 04/10/2015 19:25

My 10 year old has just written a very good blog post about fracking. She heard us talking about it, did some research and really wasn't impressed with what she read about harming the environment.

jennie1984j · 04/10/2015 20:49

he loves putting things in the correct bins

1234hello · 04/10/2015 21:02

Turning the tap off when brushing teeth. For some weird reason, this feels really wrong to me, like I need the sound of running water to concentrate ConfusedHmm

juju3 · 05/10/2015 10:35

Keep asking why newspapers can't go in the recycle bin with all the paper

lexy444 · 05/10/2015 13:50

Mine love to help with the recycling bins, but apart from that not much awareness of green issues yet...I'm hoping to educate them over time!

lindat4683 · 05/10/2015 21:15

sorting out trash
can be a game
include your children
so they do the same

Tkw2014 · 05/10/2015 23:26

My son is only 3 and it really bothers him seeing litter on the floor!

3children2love · 06/10/2015 11:18

They constantly remind me if i am putting something in the normal bin when it should be in the recycling bin

katieskatie82 · 06/10/2015 12:27

my son is very persistant in reminding me to take my cotton tote bags when i go food shopping so we dont use the plastic bags! bLESS HIM!

Natasha7 · 06/10/2015 13:52

I always telling my DC about recycling and ask them to help me with it. They know all about the value of growing your own veg and making jam...

feeona123 · 06/10/2015 13:59

My little girl is only 18 months so isn't talking that much! I'm trying to teach her how to recycle by showing her which items go in which recycling box.
