The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

I make macaroni cheese as well and put in broccoli, cauliflower, peas or other vegetables. They love it. We also have the same but with passata and grated cheese. Also goes down well, simple, cheap and healthy.

Little trees and cheesy clouds - Steamed broccoli and cauliflower in a mild cheese sauce with cheesy drips (melted cheddar) on top. Easy peasy.

alabaster002 · 24/07/2015 06:50

Anything with cauliflower cheese sprinkled with grated cheese! I guess it's the savoury taste that attracts but the cauli must still be wee bit crunchy and include some stalk......

SuzCG · 24/07/2015 09:55

I weaned both of mine on home made broccoli & cauliflower cheese (just a basic cheese sauce). They still love it now - although obviously not the mulched up version! Add a little bit of cooked diced bacon, onion, mushroom, mustard and top with breadcrumbs and bake off - super yummy comfort food.

Clicked on as I didn't know what a brassica was!

My DD adores broccoli. It's her favourite vegtable and she has it steamed on the side with everything. Is less keen on it boiled / microwaved or messed about in anyway. The day I put some cheese sauce on them was a dark day.

"Mummy the trees are diiiirrrrttttyyyy" (screamed at high pitche) followed by trying to scrape her place into a beaker of water to wash them.

SaltySeaBird · 24/07/2015 11:10

I do chop and mix with long-grain rice, sweetcorn, peas, onion, peppers and sausages to make a cold rice salad for her as a picnic staple (she isn't keen on bread) if you were looking for something more recipe based!

Spring vegetable gnocchi is another family favourite. We do it as a broth with finely diced onion, garlic, spring green, shredded chicken (roast leftover), chicken stock, a big dollop of fresh pesto and then gnocchi served in soup bowls with oodles of paramasan over the top. Very quick and easy and liked by all.

An omelette, with red pepper lips, olives for eyes, aubergine for eyebrows, and broccoli and cauliflower for the hair! Also some carrot earrings!

Anononooo · 24/07/2015 13:12

Definitely coleslaw....red and white cabbage cut by hand, and grated carrot, with yoghurt and mayonnaise. crunchy. Sometimes we add a little spring onion for kick.

WowOoo · 24/07/2015 15:55

I love cauliflower cheese. I know it's a bit boring but I can mix it up and do so many different variations.

I make it all the time.

oliveoyl72 · 24/07/2015 16:43

Brocolli cheese soup. Super easy to make. A couple of heads of callabrese, chicken or veg stock, a couple of shallots, salt, pepper + grated cheese.

Can differ the recipe by adding potato to thicken, cream, different types of cheese etc.

Cherrybellyboo · 24/07/2015 17:18

Boiled broccoli with roast is a winner here, and cauliflower cheese! Yummy!
Broccoli is one of the few greens my eldest will eat :)

DioneTheDiabolist · 25/07/2015 02:42

I am so jealous.Envy My DS wouldn't eat a brassica if it was deep fried and covered in chocolate.Blush

campocaro · 25/07/2015 09:48

Curly Kale stir fry with smoked mussels, garlic and mushrooms tasty and healthy!

Summergarden · 25/07/2015 12:53

Another vote for cauliflower and cauliflower cheese here. Just with a basic cheese sauce, often with fish fingers it's a pleaser for the whole family.

sweetsomethings · 25/07/2015 14:59

Bubbles2002 · 25/07/2015 17:49

Crispy seaweed - finely sliced curly kale, mixed with olive oil, salt and soft brown sugar. I have a range cooker so cook in top oven for about 3 mins then move to simmering oven for about 10 mins.

PurpleCrazyHorse · 26/07/2015 15:32

DD, who's 5yo, loves broccoli little trees Grin. Apparently they're the perfect mechanism to eat gravy!

FlukeSkyeRunner · 26/07/2015 16:41

Broccoli and sprouts go down surprisingly well with my two - especially with cheese sauce to dip them in. I grate broc stalks into bolognaise sauce and cottage pie along with other veg. Shredded cabbage or spring greens works well in a stir fry, usually with a soy, lime and ginger sauce.

ha2el · 26/07/2015 19:31

I've discovered a recipe for making pizza bases using cauliflower. No one can guess that it contains this vegetable!

thestylethatdecadesforgot · 26/07/2015 20:54

Sorry haven't looked at the relies but mine love broccoli in egg fried rice and in pasta. We also put broccoli into a cream sauce and whizz it up and use it for pasta.

hazelangell · 26/07/2015 22:37

I make cheese and potato pie and add spring greens and kale into it in teeny pieces, my son doesn't know I do this though so shhhh! Not sure how long I'll get away with sneaking veggies into his favourite dishes but it's working for now.

sputnicki63 · 26/07/2015 23:54

Kale crisps (oven baked, chopped Kale) is our favourite closely followed by cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Cheese just makes everything more tasty :)
