The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

I do struggle with getting my DDs to eat any veggies - however a firm favourite, thankfully, is my brocolli/cauli cheese bake. They also love my potato and swede mash Smile

missmargot · 17/07/2015 14:58

DS loves tomato pasta with either kale, cavalo nero or sprouting broccoli. DH and I often have this with black olives, chilli and anchovies in so I make a pared down version for DS.

Ausflug · 17/07/2015 15:01

I love all brassica veg pretty much in any form.

My children's favourite is broccoli. I like to add it to risottos and stir fries and curries, or make pasta with brocolli, bacon and goat's cheese.
I sometimes buy margarita pizzas and make them more exciting by adding broccoli. Purple sprouting or tenderstem broccoli is a better shape for this, but normal broccoli works fine.

OhHolyFuck · 17/07/2015 15:08

Cauliflower curry I've only just discovered - made it for me and do one night and left our bowls on the table whilst we did the last bits of getting DSs to bed, came in to find two little boys happily wolfing the whole lot down! Thankfully i didn't do it too spicy...so now it's a family favourite!

VikingLady · 17/07/2015 16:05

DD is extremely averse to the idea of eating vegetables. She can even find them blended into sauces. But she did steal a handful of my kale crisps.... Now she wants "green crisps, mummy" with jerk seasoning on all the time!

Just a bag of kale rubbed with oil, spread thinly on baking sheets, sprinkled with seasoning and naked at 150C for 40m or so.

My 4 year old and I belong to a gardening group at our local city farm. We sow the seeds, nurture them and then have great fun harvesting and cooking them. We grow a wide variety of fruit and vegetables and we enjoy creating a medley of vegetables for our Sunday dinner and then frying the left overs up on Monday with some sweet potatoes and veggie sausages. It's such fun to grow, pick and eat your own veg and it really encourages my little one to take real pleasure in eating up his green.....and all the other colours of veg too.

My 3 year old loves cauliflower cheese with broccoli. Easy to prepare, cheap to make and healthy.

TheComeToBedEyesOfMrTumble · 17/07/2015 16:13

DD's favourite is roast broccoli - toss broccoli in olive oil and and garlic puree, season and bung in oven in a baking tray, 200 deg for about 20 minutes or so. Then serve with a squeeze of lemon juice and topped with grated parmesan. Yummy.

chocolatechip123 · 17/07/2015 16:14

DS loves broccoli and would eat it every day. I adore sprouts and cabbagevand the weird cauliflower that is pointy and greenish and looks like its on drugs.

CollatalieSisters · 17/07/2015 16:20

Broccoli cheese soup, especially with stilton, is a favourite here, as is egg fried rice with any type of vegetable chopped too small to be picked out.

MermaidinJeans · 17/07/2015 16:51
  • Whizz broccoli/kale up into pasta sauces
  • Grated cauliflower with garlic and herbs makes awesome cauliflower rice
  • pizza bases made with blended cauliflower
AGnu · 17/07/2015 16:58

I've done cauliflower rice before which went down well but mostly we either have vegetables as a basic steamed/boiled/braised side dish or we chuck a random mix into sauces/curries. One thing that always goes down well is gobi pakoras like this recipe. The trouble is that I often eat most of them before the DC get a look in! Blush

blessedenough · 17/07/2015 17:13

I low carb so we eat tonnes of green veg and love them. Firm favs in our house are, broccoli and cauli cheese, cauli rice - Chinese or Singapore style, cauli mash, swede mash, garlic butter stir fried kale, coleslaw, roasted cauliflower or broccoli either Indian style or with cheese and garlic, Jamie Oliver's bacon and broccoli salad is amazing great for bbqs. I also make Xmas soup which is Turkey with bacon and shredded sprouts but we do eat it all year around! We rarely eat plain steamed vegetables now.

blessedenough · 17/07/2015 17:15

Oh not forgetting cauli as a base for soup and pizza.

JulesJules · 17/07/2015 17:40

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese bake, I make a tomato sauce and put a layer in a lasagne dish and then put the cauli and brocc in and cover with cheese sauce with mozzerella and parmesan on top. Make it a one pot supper by adding cooked pasta or for DH and me by adding stilton (DDs don't like stilton)

Favourite way of cooking cabbage to go with roast dinner is slice and cook in butter with fennel seeds

Wolfcub · 17/07/2015 18:39

Cauliflower cheese but with the sauce made from 100ml half fat creme crochet, salt, pepper, a teaspoon of.Dijon mustard and a combination of.strong cheddar and parmesan

Thegentlemonkey · 17/07/2015 20:18

We have turnip crisps as a winter garden produce treat - slice with a peeler as thickly as you can, toss in olive oil & a tiny pinch of salt, & in the oven for about 20 min. You do have to watch them as the window between crisp & burned is narrow. They're wolfed down in seconds by my 4 year old and adults alike!

kierie · 17/07/2015 20:21

My ds will only eat the stalks of broccoli, so we cut them into rings or sticks with the harder, outer skin removed

daisydalrymple · 17/07/2015 20:34

Broccoli and cauliflower cheese soup - gently fry an onion (also works very well with leeks - more tasty!) until soft then add a broccoli and cauliflower both cut into florets. Add vegetable or chicken stock, then cook until tender. Blend until smooth, or take a couple of ladels out first then add back once blended if you prefer a chunky soup. Add grated or cubed cheese to each bowl when serving. (Mature cheddar a favourite here, but others work equally well!)

StillNoFuckingEyeDeer · 17/07/2015 21:35

We sometimes put broccoli or cauliflower in macaroni cheese. I think that's probably their favourite way to eat them.
I occasionally put swede in a riot vegetable mash, which always goes down pretty well on a cottage pie

BeeMyBaby · 17/07/2015 21:47

Brocoli and cauliflower cheese bake with a little bit of pasta.

RedKites · 17/07/2015 21:52

DS2 loves broccoli just roasted for 20 minutes. DS1 is more of a work in progress when it comes to brassica vegetables...

cornflakegirl · 17/07/2015 22:00

DS1 loves broccoli, especially in broccoli and stilton soup. We also make a warm salad that includes chargrilled peppers and tenderstem broccoli with leaves, cherry tomatoes and chopped avocado. A recent favourite is miso soup made with matchstick carrots and shredded savoy cabbage for a really fast and tasty weekend lunch.

cornflakegirl · 17/07/2015 22:04

Oh, and just remembered red cabbage - we love Delia's braised red cabbage and apple recipe - so easy and delicious with a stew or a roast.

BeautifulRedBoots · 17/07/2015 22:55

We dip lightly cooked broccoli into olive oil and balsamic vinegar (just like the bread in some Mediterranean restaurants). Every week I had two boys begging for broccoli and dip Smile
