The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

DD, 2, has always loved my homemade soups - all chunky veg incl. swede and mashed veg inc. cauliflower, broccoli and cabbage with gravy. She'll pretty much eat any vegetable Grin

My dad introduced me to Colcannon when I was little and it's a fab alternative to plain/creamy tatties - it's an Irish dish made from mashed potatoes and kale (or cabbage), with milk (or cream), butter, salt and pepper. I love it and so does my little toddler. x

The children and I all love cauliflower cheese.

lhlee62 · 21/07/2015 22:26

My daughters are both lovers of broccoli and last week I introduced them to a green smoothie with kale, apple and pineapple juice, they loved them!

buckley1983 · 21/07/2015 22:44

My little fella loves bubble & squeak cakes! Mix creamy mashed potato with boiled green cabbage (or cooked, chopped sprouts) & onions, shape into patties & lightly fry in a shallow pan - yummy!!

Green pasta is a favourite in this house. The 4 year old won't eat much veg but loves pasta pesto so I make my 'special' pesto, or green pasta, to increase his veg intake. This consists of onions and garlic fried up in saucepan, add lots of broccoli, spinach and handful of frozen soya beans (plus any other green veg you have hanging around). Put lid on and cook until soft. Blitz with blender until smooth then add a few dollops of pesto. Stir through cooked pasta and top with grated cheese. I freeze batches in ice cube trays then reheat in microwave for quick, easy and healthy tea.

Our little ones love broccoli but only if we mash it or mix it with food. One other trick we use is to get them help us when we grow veg in our garden as they love eating things they've grown themselves.

Cauliflower and Broccoli in a yummy pasta sauce is my kids' favourite. The sauces can vary to make it more interesting. Sometimes I use a tomato based sauce, other times I use a cheesy one.

I love this thread title. Visions of toddlers in professorial discussions of Brassica oleracea versus Brassica fruticulosa, and whether or not Sinapis arvensis, though tasty, is correctly classified within the genus.

chairmeoh · 22/07/2015 14:46

Cauliflower cheese is always a winner. Sometimes I bung in some broccoli for a change.
Shredded cabbage stir fried with sliced onions. Keep it crunchy-ish.
Kale baked with a tiny bit of sea salt and some ground pepper.

My son loves cauliflower and broccoli cheese

When ds3 was at nursery he told the staff that he loved broccoli so the other children used to put their broccoli on his plate. He was quite shy so used to eat it rather than say anything. He eventually found his voice and told them he was only eating his own and that they had to eat theirs.

He's 9 now but the staff still mention it when I see them.

this: it's delicious

Brussels Sprouts with tomato, ginger and coriander

Takes about 15 minutes, excluding chopping.

For 4
400g Brussels sprouts
4 tomatoes (big ones), in thickish slices
1 tbsp olive oil
1 red onion, thinly sliced (or plain old boring onion will do)
1 fresh chilli, thinly sliced (one with a bit of wellie)
1 tablespoon coriander seeds, crushed (this is important, crush the seeds yourself, just before cooking)
1 tablespoon fresh ginger, sliced
1 tablespoon (dark) soy sauce

(if eating with rice, put on to cook once all the prep is done, but before starting to cook)

  1. Peel sprouts and cut large ones in half. Dunk in a pot of boiling water for about 2 minutes. Drain and put to one side.
  2. Heat olive oil in a wide pan, and add sprouts and onion. Cook over medium-high heat for about 2 minutes.
  3. Add garlic, chilli, coriander and ginger - cook for 2 minutes.
  4. Add tomatoes and soy sauce.
  5. Cook on medium heat for 5 minutes or so. Add a splash of water if it starts to dry out - it should be moist, but not liquid.

Serve with rice (or maybe bulghar wheat, or noodles), sprinkled with fresh coriander. You can add some toasted cashews for protein.

My kids love cauliflower curry with peas

rhetorician · 22/07/2015 23:07

oh and cauliflower dhal - red lentils, mild spicing, coconut milk, cauliflower. Yum. Recipe if you want it Wink

melmoo · 23/07/2015 00:12

DCs both love broccoli. In fact it's one of only 3 vegetable that both of them eat (red pepper and sweetcorn being the others) so it ends up in everthing. It's most popular in stir frys though.

thatsshallot · 23/07/2015 11:13

Love love love roast broccoli and cauliflower - toss in oil and season with paprika, salt and cumin seeds and roast until charred and crispy - kind of live healthy teumpura

Also love cauliflower 'rice' whizzed up and then dry fried over a high head with seasoning as above or tumeric and cinnamon for pilau etc to go with curries, excellent way to get get extra veg into kids with no idea on their part at all :)

CheeseEMouse · 23/07/2015 16:04

My daughter likes swede and carrot mash - easy peasy to do (boil together, drain, mash with butter). But to be honest if it's covered in gravy or ketchup she'll have a go - so broccoli and ketchup would be her choice!

nushcar · 23/07/2015 17:38

I make steamed or boiled broccoli more interesting by grating cheese on top, sprinkling a few crumbled walnuts, adding chilli seeds and a bit of lemon. Can either be baked or warmed in microwave.

Our two year old will not touch anything green, except if we disguise it, so we blend kale, cucumber, mint and apple and make a green juice - put in bottle in fridge so he thinks we bought it! Rowe just freeze this concoction in lollipop makers and he thinks he is getting a treat - hah!

Cauliflower crumbled as substitute for rice or making pizza base combined with egg and cheese helps on low carb diet.

My new experiment with any veggies is to slice very finely and season with paprika and tiny bit of olive oil and make crisps. You can do with kale too, but need to eat straight away. It absorbs moisture and become soggy quite soon after.

AramintaSilverstone · 23/07/2015 18:50

Both mine (4&9) love Kale crisps (baked with olive oil, salt & pepper). They pick it straight from the veggie patch themselves.
