The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

I never knew that swedes were brassicas. That would make DS's favourite brassica recipe bashed neeps with haggis, then...

Other than that, both DC like cauliflower cheese with bacon, or brussel sprouts fried with lardons (spot the theme Blush)

Cauliflower & brocolli cheese tart. All my kids love this with jacket potato and sweet corn, even fussy husband does!

purplepandas · 18/07/2015 20:49

Cauliflower cheese here all the way. DD3 calls is flower cheese! We add marmite and it tastes yummy.

purplepandas · 18/07/2015 20:49

Calls it. Sorry, brain is half asleep.

Kale crisps are a must - and further improved with chili oil for the grown ups, but baked in the oven with just plain olive oil is great for toddlers.

Cream of broccoli or broccoli/cauliflower soup - sautee pieces in butter in a pan with a lid so they both sautee and steam, then when reasonably soft, add water or stock, a dollop of soured cream/creme fraiche, and puree until smooth. Then add cheddar cheese on top or stirred in.

Sprouts - halved, tossed in butter and black pepper, and placed cut side down on baking sheet for 12 minutes at 160. Even better with chestnuts roasted alongside them. My toddler will eat them.

Mashed swede and potato - not sure why you'd mess with such a good thing.

And any brassicas (except swede/turnip) taste nice in a Chinese noodle stir-fry in a sauce with sherry vinegar and finished with sesame oil.

I really like romanesco and would eat more of it if it weren't so expensive!

Broccoli and pork pasta - brown minced pork with onion (or fresh fennel), garlic, and tons of fennel seeds (and chili flakes, if the kids will eat it), then add a tin of tomatoes, and finally, when the tomatoes are cooked, add broccoli florets to sauce to cook for a few minutes and serve with pasta - orechiette or rotini.

A family favourite here is drumhead cabbage with cheese sauce. Cut the cabbage neatly into quarters or sixths depending on size, so that each slice is held together by some core stem. Poach gently in saltd water, then lift out and drain well.
Place slices in a shallow dish and spoon over cheese sauce. Cook quickly in a hot oven so sauce bubbles and browns.

Makes a really interesting dish from a cheap vegetable, and goes well with winter meals such as steak and kidney pie or adds colour and texture when served with winter stews.

I also like a warm salad of mixed vegetables such as sprouts, brocolli, shredded cabbage etc with a hollandaise dressing.

Mine love spring green parcels take some meat or fish or vegetables what ever you fancy and wrap in a spring green leaf or two and cook in the oven

DS (7) and I have recently discovered kale. We love A Girl Called Jack's Kale Pesto and also really enjoyed steamed kale with a bit of baked salmon and rice. I really must try making kale crisps too!

My Irish Granny used to make boiled bacon, boiled potatoes and cabbage with parsley sauce. Sounds so simple but the way she made it, it was absolutely divine.

littleme96 · 18/07/2015 21:28

We make kale chips - take some kale coat it with oil, a little salt and some tahini and bake them at a low temperature until they have dried out. Yummy!

LovelyFriend · 18/07/2015 21:30

I make a lentil, lemon and kale soup which doesn't look amazing but tastes delicious. Both my young children love it - much to my surprise.

they will also both eat broccoli in pretty much any form.

DD1 loves brussel sprouts. At Xmas we all had flu but I knocked up a roast chicken dinner (other plans were cancelled). 7yo declared she "wasn't hungry and doesn't want dinner. I will only eat the sprouts" she declared firmly - bless her :)

Cauliflower cheese

Tkw2014 · 18/07/2015 21:55

My dcs love vegetable soup with the sweetness of suede and turnip, also with butternut squash and a stock cube!

lynsmagoo · 18/07/2015 21:59

Cottage Pie is handy for me,as the kids seem to like it with any green veg! Fry your mince until brown, sprinkle the oxo cubes into the mince and stir in to add flavour. When the mince is cooked cover with foil and put to one side.Boil your potatoes, mash the when they are cooked.Place your mince into a oven dish, place the mash potatoes on top.Top with cheese and put in the oven for around 20 minutes to warm through and melt the cheese, while the cottage pie is in the oven cook your veg.Make your gravy and serve :)

Cauliflower Cheese with bacon

Kangakate · 18/07/2015 22:05

My DC loves cabbage pasta - cabbage, mozzarella, pancetta, garlic, thyme, pasta and pine nuts

pfcpompeysarah · 18/07/2015 22:07

We cook pasta in water with stock in it, then brown off some cooked chicken in a frying pan with broccoli, onions or spring onions, garlic, then put it in a pan together and toss it so the juices cover all the pasta.

compy99 · 18/07/2015 22:15

fortunately our little chap loves all veggies, his fav is broccoli which he loves with every meal which we steam, and cauliflower cheese as another popular meal. looking forward to introducing vegetable curries, which will include all the green veggies with red peppers, chick peas, kidney beans, potato and tomato added.

arat · 18/07/2015 22:29

DD's is a fan of cauliflower and one of her favourite meals is cauliflower cheese

cozza777 · 18/07/2015 22:43

My little boys Love pasta and I often make Macaroni cheese and add Broccoli Cauliflowers and peas to it.

LuckyBluie · 18/07/2015 23:24

Definitely crispy kale. I either use the bags of pre chopped stuff or we pick it from the garden. The whole family loves it Smile

savo888 · 18/07/2015 23:36

Making smoothies and pouring them into tumblers with ice, umbrella and bendy straw makes it look adult-like and a mocktail. Visually it is very appealing and gets them drinking it. Best is Kale, green apple and half a banana. The apple and banana is pretty much all you can taste yet it has the added goodness of kale and you wouldn't know it.

Charliebobz · 19/07/2015 00:15

Being Scots we love a neep, or a swede whether as an ingredient in soup or mixed in with tatties for mince and tatties. The kids like them because they are sweet. Don't need to disguise them.

jayz268 · 19/07/2015 00:36

We all love curly Kale, either steamed or steamed then lightly fried in butter.

californiaburrito · 19/07/2015 07:04

My DD really likes this simple recipe for cooked red cabbage-

Thinly slice half a head of red cabbage.
Lightly steam in a covered pot with a little water, drain.
Remove lid and add a pat of butter and a spoonful of redcurrant jelly.
Cook on low heat until the butter and the jelly melt and form a sauce.

Delicious with sausages!

Chopstheduck · 19/07/2015 07:21

Mine love a pasta dish which I make for their lunchboxes sometimes. It's pasta, broccoli, and cherry tomatoes mixed with creme fraiche and pesto.
