The Brassica Growers Association are backing the Love Your Greens campaign and would love to hear your DCs favourite dishes which use a brassica vegetable, which includes: broccoli, kale, swede, Brussels sprouts, turnips, cauliflower, spring greens and cabbages [don’t worry, some of us here at MNHQ didn't know what they were either!]

Here’s what they say, “Greens are great and we want everyone to enjoy them as much as us! As well as tasting great, they’re really versatile and full of goodness. We can’t wait to see the delicious dishes you come up with – it’s time to inspire the nation to love their greens”

So, what’s your DCs favourite dish which includes one (or more!) of the brassica vegetables? Can you share the recipe with us? A vegetable curry perhaps? Maybe a delicious Spanish omelette? Or possibly just a classic bubble and squeak recipe which they particularly like? How about a fab coleslaw using your food processor? The Brassica Growers Association are hoping to launch a recipe book next year and are looking for some inspiration from Mumsnetters and their DCs so feel free to add whatever recipes you may have!

Everyone who posts on the thread will be entered into a prize draw to win a £300 Love2Shop voucher!

Standard Insight T&Cs apply.

Thanks and good luck

cauliflower florets roasted in olive oil with a sprinkle of salt

Bearsinmotion · 18/07/2015 08:22

DD (3) loves a recipe my mum makes of Quorn fillets and broccoli in a red pesto and creme fraiche sauce with pasta. Or at least she did until mum forgot to add the broccoli and just put it on a separate plate, which is now how DD wants it served!

WhatAHooHa · 18/07/2015 08:43

My lot all love it with bacon - chunks of bacon fried, then the cabbage chucked on on top with a bit of water until its all cooked, served with potato cakes. We also eat a lot of veg in place of meat meals, sweet potato and cauliflower curry is a winner as the cauli and sweet potato are sturdy enough to give some texture in the curry sauce.

TattieHowkerz · 18/07/2015 08:44

Dd loves broccoli, very lightly steamed. Sometimes she dips it in ketchup Smile. She is 4. She called it broccoltree, because she thinks the florets are tiny trees.

DD2 (2) will grab a whole head of uncooked broccoli and take big bites out of it, so we have a real fan of broccoli (and all other veg)

If any survives being eaten raw they like it stir-fried in sesame oil, with finely chopped bacon and then a handful of sesame seeds at the end.

As with everyone else Broccoli and cauliflower cheese. I use leftover stilton if I have any and DD1 (6) is beginning to tolerate stronger and blue cheeses when we occasionally have a cheese board.

WhattodowithMum · 18/07/2015 13:14

Of course they love cauliflower cheese!

An absolute favourite in our house is left over chicken diced and warmed up in a pan with cooked bacon lardons. Then I add any left over chicken gravy and a tub of creme fraiche. To this I add boiled pasta and broccoli florets (we need a big head or two small ones) boiled together and drained (obviously add florets halfway through pasta cooking time.) Mix it all up with a bit of parmesan on top and it all goes quickly.

Cole slaw made with cabbage, any colour, plus thin apple slices goes down well. I dress it with mayo, a splash of vinegar, a spoon of sugar and celery salt. Crunchy, pretty and sweet enough to appeal to children.

Our family favourite is Broccoli and Cauliflower Cheese but I put chopped pancetta in - a guaranteed empty plate meal!!

tia3456 · 18/07/2015 13:35

Broccoli and Cauliflower cheese, (the veg with a cheese sauce) so easy to make

DoItTooJulia · 18/07/2015 13:38

Crispy kale is the winner here! Dry fry washed kale. I either use the bags of pre chopped stuff or we pick IT from the garden. Goes with shepherds pie, stirfry and actually, most things! Yum Smile

Pasta bake with mixed vegetables - I layer a tomato sauce with mixed vegetables such as carrots, broccolli, mushrooms, spinach, onions with lasagne an cheese sauce - top with lots of grated cheese and bake for 40 minutes in a medium oven.

melandjake99 · 18/07/2015 13:58

Cauliflower and broccoli cheese. Really easy to make. Top with breadcrumbs for that extra crunch

janeyf1 · 18/07/2015 14:00

Broccoli & sweetcorn dipped in tomato sauce

pgwynne · 18/07/2015 14:02

My son is fussy and I can say his favourite dish is quite simply beans on toast with cheese on top. However, my daughter loves sausage casserole with potatoes and lots of vegetables. Oh with lashings of gravy.

jt75 · 18/07/2015 14:17

Macaroni cheese with tomato and broccoli.

rainbowvalley · 18/07/2015 14:29

Broccoli & Cauliflower pasta bake with melted mature Cheddar!

Seakay · 18/07/2015 14:32

blanch Brussel sprouts for about 3 minutes - they should still be bright green. Pile into a liquidiser with a few tablespoons of cooking water. Make into a puree - add more water if necessary or a dash of cream if you have it. Season with salt, black pepper and grated nutmeg.
Brussel sprouts - yuck!
Green puree or green sauce - plates cleaned!

andywedge · 18/07/2015 14:35

Just broccoli on it's own;she'll even grab a piece from the fridge an eat it raw

prwilson · 18/07/2015 14:37

Vegetable Risotto.

staceystarr · 18/07/2015 14:52

homemade healthy coleslaw (with 0% fat natural yoghurt instead of mayo) and the usual veg (Cabbage/Carrots etc) with burgers or hotdogs and homemade sweet potato fries with some flavouring/light spice goes down well at the weekends with my two. Smile

BreconBeBuggered · 18/07/2015 14:52

Finely chop a mixture of cabbage and Brussels sprouts, and microwave for around 3 minutes in a little water. Meanwhile, add salt, pepper and shallots to double cream and cook gently until the cream gets nice and shallot-y.
Drain the brassicas, remove the cooked shallots and stir the cream into the vegetables. Best left for a couple of hours for a good exchange of flavours then reheated. We don't have a name for it so we just say 'cabbaaahge' in a really poncey way.

DS loves this and helped me devise the recipe. He's always been a big brassica fan.

hiddenmichelle · 18/07/2015 14:52

Cauliflower with macaroni cheese is always my kids favourite! Clean Plates!! hurrah!

Laura2t · 18/07/2015 14:53

Homemade mac and cheese with broccoli! She can't get enough of it :).

ElectroNymph · 18/07/2015 14:54

It would have to be Christmas Dinner with of course, Brussel sprouts! It's a family favourite.

TracyKNixon · 18/07/2015 14:57

My little ones all love cauliflower and brocolli cheese! They call it 'trees in cheese'!

Ganne · 18/07/2015 14:58

For both DC, cauliflower and broccoli were never a problem. For Marc, the problem was carrots! We gave up on that in the end.
